From the Rector
Y
ahweh gives the Law to Moses, authorizing him to write the word of God with divine authority. Up until then, God had been dealing with individuals one by one. But now, at Sinai, the rag tag lot of them are being made into a peculiar people.
This is how the Law has always been received by Jews and Christians: as a kind of
buddy system. By the word of God written, you can know what God expects of me and hold me accountable, and I can know what God expects of you and hold you accountable. After all, we have, you and I, just like everyone else in Marin or Las Vegas, a nearly infinite ability to imagine God approves of whatever we approve of. Welcome to St Stephen's.
See you in church,
Fr Ellsworth

The Rector reflects on the
2018 Stewardship
Campaign
:
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
GET MEAN
I
n the year 2017, we have had 170 pledging households at St Stephen's, giving a total of $599,266. That makes the average pledge -
the mean
- $3,525. The mean is skewed high by a short list of top givers, so perhaps a more accurate snapshot of the people in our pews would be the median. Very well, then: the
median pledge at St Stephen's is $1,520. That's enough dough, in a year's time, to buy a daily Chai Latté 'dirty', the shot of espresso cutting the sweetness. I had my first one, on the house, the other day, at
Peet's Coffee in our cathedral. Delicious, but I digress.
If you're on the short list, thank you for being generous, and keep looking
up! If you've never pledged before, I ask you: Please make 2018 the year you begin. And if you're below a number and think you could be well beyond either the mean or the median, use them as a benchmark. If you're below the median, aim to surpass it. If you've achieved the median but not yet the mean,
get mean.

Thank you to all who have already responded with pledges for St Stephen's for 2018.
Below is a link for the Stewardship Poster from last Sunday, 24th September. For those who have not yet had a chance to pledge, all pledges received by 9 AM today (Thursday) will be added to this Sunday's Poster in the Narthex as well as to the Sunday bulletin list. Scan and email your pledge to [email protected]. Use the second link below or the one in Fr Ellsworth's paragraph to download the pledge card and the first link to view the Poster. Whatever amount you pledge is sincerely appreciated and illustrates your thoughtful support of the St Stephen's church community.

The End of Life Option Act is a California law that permits terminally ill adult patients with capacity to make medical decisions to be prescribed an aid-in-dying medication if certain conditions are met. Signed into law by Governor Brown in October 2015, the law went into effect on June 9, 2016.

Anasazi Luncheon
27th October
11 AM
Storyteller and Folklorist Ruth Stotter travels the world performing and teaching. She is the author of numerous books, has written and produced two plays, hosted a radio program on KUSF-FM, and currently has a CEIS Fulbright grant to teach at foreign universities. In 2010 she received the Oracle Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Storytelling Network.
Enthralled with the way folk and fairy tales spotlight family relationships, Ruth will bring humorous and provocative stories collected from around the world that address our choices as adults and elders. There is good reason why many therapists use story therapy as we see things anew when we open our hearts and minds to enter the magical world of story.
