There are several ways that you may
help honor and celebrate this special day:
  • Write a card or note with your well wishes for a Blessings Basket. You may bring this with you on October 29th.
  • We would like to say "thank-you" in a more tangible way with a "surprise" retirement gift. If you would like to contribute to this gift, please mail your checks to Trish Jones, P.O. Box 337, Davidson, NC 28036 or drop it off at the church office. Please write "Lib Retirement Gift" in the memo line and we will present it to her on October 29th when we honor her service.

Scripture: Matthew 22: 24-40 and Deuteronomy 34: 1-12
Sermon: Repentance: The Entire Life of Believers
Lib McGregor Simmons will preach at 8:30 Lingle Chapel and 11 in the sanctuary.

On Sunday, Protestants around the world will be remembering that half a millennium ago, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany.  The first thesis reads this way: "When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, 'Repent' (Matthew 4: 17), he intended the entire life of believers to be repentance."

What does it mean for Christians to repent, not only in the sanctuary when praying a corporate prayer of confession or in the privacy of one's own home in the midst of a personal devotional, but with the whole of our existence?  On Sunday, we will consider how repentance is marked by a change of heart which occurs in response to the promises and grace of God and which eventuates in our being made free to experience joy and spread it to others.

The Geneva Choir will sing  Surely, it Is God Who Saves Me at the 8:30 service.
The Chancel and Youth choir will sing For the Beauty of the Earth at the 11:00 service .
The Alleluia Ringers will play Ein' Feste Burg: Final at the 11:00 service.

Covenant (9:45 a.m. Jetton Hall) October 29. John Kuykendall, President Emeritus of Davidson College, will present three sessions on "The Mysterious Dorothy Sayers."  Dorothy Sayers, whose mid-20 th century mystery novels about Lord Peter Wimsey made her famous, was also a creative and devout (if unconventional) lay theologian. Like her contemporaries, C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams, she sought ways of interpreting Christianity in the modern world. Her book, The Mind of the Maker, is an intriguing and perceptive study of Christian doctrine from the standpoint of a creative artist.
