It's the Journey ... Not the Destination
Over this last month I was reminded of a very simple truth; the places most worth going are not easy to get to.

The fact that they are hard to reach is what makes them special.  If it were easy to get there everybody would be there; making your experience no different than the hordes of people you would be surrounded by.

The travel is part of the reward.  Once the destination has been reached it is that much more special because of the time and effort it took to get there.  You value it and appreciate it more because you know what you need to go through and sacrifice to get there.

I have also noticed stories about hard to get to places are more interesting and more inspiring to people.  They not only spark a sense of wonder in others but leave them with the notation that if you did it they might be able to as well.

For me personally this is a valuable lesson to keep top of mind at all times considering the business I am in.  Fitness as an industry is full of quick fixes; shakes, supplements, DVD, exercise programs, six-minute this, 4-week that. Most promise amazing results in short periods of time with little investment on your part.

"Just squeeze your way to more shapely hips and thighs....."

"In only 6 minutes a day........."

"Loose up to 10 pounds in as little as 5 days......"

"Be in the best shape of your life in as little as 3 hours a week....."

Most who do these types of programs never reach the lofty goal they set for themselves, or if they do, are still not satisfied. Also of note, when losing 15 pounds is the goal and you achieve it, then what? If the journey to get there has been ignored then the result is not sustainable and one continues to repeat gaining and losing the same 15 pounds for decades.

So we must remind ourselves often, the places most worth going are difficult to get to.  This is not a negative, a blockade or a hurdle it is simply the reality. Work for your reward. The important thing to remember is that the achievement of the travel is a huge part of the reason the destination is special. We hope that you sense this when you spend time at Performance Locker. We strive to help make the journey fun and rewarding. We strive to help you understand the process so the journey is sustainable. Thank you for inviting us on your journey!

Eating with the Seasons! What Mother Nature Intended!
Butternut Squash with Quinoa, Spinach, + Walnuts

What You Need...
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium leek, white and light green parts only, cleaned and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups reduced-sodium vegetable broth
  • 2 cups peeled and diced butternut squash
  • 1 cup quinoa
  • 1/3 cup golden raisins
  • 2 cups baby spinach
  • 2 tablespoons toasted chopped walnuts
How To Make It...
  1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the garlic and leeks and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the broth, squash, quinoa and raisins and bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the liquid is absorbed and the squash and quinoa are tender, 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. Gently stir in the spinach and cook until it just begins to wilt, 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Remove from the heat. Sprinkle with the walnuts.
Why You Should Be Eating with the Seasons
By consuming foods that are in season we give our bodies a wider variety of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Freshly picked fruits and vegetables are more nutritious. Simply put, Mother Nature knows best; she grows exactly what your body needs, when you need it most. Eating with the Seasons is a simple way to become more in tune and grounded with the world around you. Give it a try and let us know how you feel.

Increased Performance Through Improved Mobility
We like direct paths, A+B=C.  When our goal is to increase strength it makes sense to lift heavy things. When the goal is to increase speed we do things faster; to increase endurance we do things longer.

Enter reality; where equations are more like A(B/D)xE2=Z.

Imagine a river with a strong current, watch how effortlessly the water flows downstream.  Millions of gallons traveling with an amazing amount of speed and force.

Enter the beaver dam.

An obstruction blocking the natural flow of the water. Does the water stop? Of course not, it continues to flow finding ways around the dam. However, any path it chooses will not be as efficient as its originally intended path.  Over time it will even begin to change the landscape by eroding and cutting away surrounding land to accommodate its new path. That's a lot of energy spent with a large amount of damage dished out to the surrounding area.

If the dam were removed the natural flow would be restored preserving the surrounding areas, thereby instantly increasing the power and efficiency of the river.

This is exactly what mobility work at Performance Locker does.

Optimal joint movement is all about the efficient transfer of force throughout the body. Think of strength, speed, and power as "energy flow". If at any point the flow is disrupted by a joint that can not move through full range of motion your body will work around it; eroding the surrounding areas and carving out a new (always less efficient) path.  By increasing the agility of key joints like the ankles, hips, thoracic spine and shoulders to move through full ranges of motions we are essentially breaking down the dam allowing energy to flow more efficiently and not create harmful work-around paths.  This practice will instantly unlock new performance capabilities much faster than any other method with ZERO collateral damage to the surrounding areas.

The moral of the story is once again ... working smart trumps working hard.

Casey's Top 5 Must See Halloween Movies!
HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love all things October in Northeast Michigan; Apple orchards (& donuts), fall colors, bow hunting, hoodies, Halloween and 30 days of scary movies (after I am all caught up with the new episodes of the Walking Dead on Netflix). I love scary movies but it just doesn't feel right to watch them outside of October... so each and every year Mary Beth and I save them up and go to town when the leaves begin to fall. Each year I find myself coming back to some familiar titles, so this month I'd like to share my top 5 scary movies to watch each October and 5 things you didn't now about my most favorite horror movie EVER.
#5. Grindhouse; Death Proof & Planet Terror (Quentin Tarantino, 2007)
Technically these are two movies but I am lumping them together. These two films were released simultaneously as a double feature and are an homage to the "Grindhouse" movies of the drive-in theaters back in the day. Death Proof is more psychological thriller with a super awesome villain named Stunt Man Mike (Kurt Russell) and his car. Planet Terror, a campy, over-the-top outbreak movie is the perfect amount of bad and is wildly entertaining in a ridiculousness kind of way. Both are filmed in a very grainy, low budget style to really deliver the drive-in experience at home.

#4. Night of the Living Dead (George A. Romero, 1968)
Originally intended to be the "warm up movie" at a drive-in double feature, Night of the Living Dead not only blew audiences away but set the standards and 'rules' for all Zombie movies to follow after it. The making of this movie is a fascinating story and it is told in a Netflix documentary titled, "Birth of the Living Dead". This film is classic and iconic and every time I watch it, I find something new to appreciate.

#3. Carrie (Brian De Palma, 1976)
Creepy Carrie! Creepy Carrie! Creepy Carrie! You will never look at John Travolta the same again. This screen adaptation of the Stephen King novel by the same name is a psycho-sci thriller classic and no respectable film lover library is complete without it.

#2. Dawn of the Dead (Zack Snyder, 2004)
What if zombies could run? Think about that for a minute...

#1. Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978)
I cannot get enough of this movie. I have watched it every single Halloween since I was in the 7th grade, where I saw it for the first time with my old man. I look forward to it each and every year and will not watch it any other time. So to celebrate the best horror film ever made, here are 5 things you may not know about John Carpetner's Halloween:
  • Michael Myers famous white mask was actually a William Shatner Captain Kirk mask purchased from a local costume shop and painted white.
  • The film was shot in California where "fall" does not really exist which is a problem as the story takes place in Illinois.  To make the outdoor sets look like fall in the mid-west they had to spread leaves on the ground and on each location change, collect all the leaves to reuse them for the next shot.  Notice when watching that all the trees are full of green leaves. This technique takes advantage of our brain's "closure" mechanism wherein we fill in the gaps to make sense of things. We see fall colored leaves on the ground and the character Laurie carrying an orange pumpkin - bam! It must be fall.
  • The role of Dr. Loomis was turned down by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee before being offered to Donald Pleasence.
  • Carpenter was a huge Alfred Hitchcock fan; the name for the Dr. Loomis character came from Janet Leigh's lover seen in the first scene of "Psycho" .  Janet Leigh who played Marion Crane in Psycho and star of the famous "shower scene" was also Jamie Lee Curtis's mother (who makes a small cameo in 1998s Halloween H2O).
  • The character of Michael Myers was originally intended to be a nameless embodiment of evil simply referred to as "The Shape".  The blank, white, emotionless mask was intended to portray that Michael Myers was "pure evil".
What does this have to do with Performance Locker and mobility work? Nothing! But in living a balanced life it's fun to geek out on your favorite things once in a while. :)

Thank You Yogis + Donut Rollers!
It's no secret, we LOVE Alpena! After hosting and sponsoring several  co mmunity events over the past couple months we love Alpena even more! We are in awe at the generosity and thoughtfulness that is right here in Alpena.

A big thank you to all who attended our most recent Dharma Initiative! We collectively raised $85 dollars plus a big bag of dog food and dog toys for the Humane Society!  Save the date for the next Dharma Initiative Saturday, December 9th at 2pm at PL with proceeds benefiting Hope Shores Alliance formerly known as Shelter Inc.  Love the idea, but can't make it? Contact [email protected] to set up arrangements for your donation!

Another big thank you goes out to all who joined us for the Great Donut Roll, a Fundraiser for Thunder Bay Trails Association earlier this month!  Together we raise d $120! Even though the weather called for thunderstorms all we encountered was light rain towards the end of our ride. The fall leaves were absolutely beautiful! When we arrived to the orchard we were all greeted with freshly made donuts and cider. As soon as that first donut hits your mouth you forget all about the 50 miles you just pedaled to get there! Each fall we embark on this journey, join us next year! The ride is safe, includes assistance along the way if needed, and is a great way to make new friends.
