Roundup by the CEO
Dear Members and Colleagues,

This month has seen more 'world-firsts' for the MENA region following the launch of the world's largest concentrated solar power plant to be built in Dubai.  The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority announced it had selected ACWA Power and Shanghai Power to build a 700 MW extension to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Complex. The new plant will deliver energy at 7.3 US cents per kWh and will have the world's tallest solar tower measuring 260 metres.

A consortium led by Masdar and EDF submitted the world's lowest-ever bid at 1.79 US cents per KWh, for Saudi Arabia's first commercial scale solar PV plant - the Sakaka solar power project totalling 300 MW.

Bahrain presented its new National Renewable Energy Action Plan which is expected to bring 255 MW of PV capacity by 2025 and 700 MW of renewable energy power generation capacity by 2030, to be implemented through net metering, tender based FIT scheme and a renewable energy mandate for new buildings.

In Iran, a deal was signed to construct a 600 MW solar farm in Tehran which is expected to be completed by 2021.  Oman continues to boost its renewable energy development with the announcement that solar power systems will be installed on the rooftops of 22 schools run by the Ministry of Education.

On the Energy Efficiency side, Etihad ESCO in Dubai announced it has awarded a retrofit project for 243 buildings of Wasl Properties. This project will increase energy efficiency of the buildings achieving annual savings of over AED15million for an investment of AED69million. It was awarded to Smart Automation Energy which specialises in retrofitting buildings.
