-- Anne Douglas --
“I’ve been part of St. Barnabas since 1996. We had belonged to St. Thomas but wanted to find a new church, so planned to visit several. This was the first we visited. It was nice to see others from there here, so it was also the
last
church we visited!
“I love reading and music. I’m currently reading another book by the Scottish writer Alexander McCall Smith. Bach and Mozart are among my favorite composers. I’ve also been singing in the Windsor Gardens Community Chorus for the past five years. We’re preparing now for our December concert.
“Getting news from my grandchildren is one of my favorite things these days. They are six, nine and 13 and live outside Portland. It is fun to be able to email with them.”

-- Irene Shepard --
“People say I’ve had an interesting life, and I did write a book about it last year. I was born and grew up in Rhodesia, Africa--now Zimbabwe. I became a high school biology teacher. In 1986, I left there and moved to Europe.
“My home was in Switzerland when I met my American husband. I had traveled to Portugal to visit friends. He had retired long before and was living in a small Portuguese town. He was a cyclist, and being there allowed him to cycle all over the world. I joined him and we toured five continents on a tandem.
“His three-year-old grandson brought us to Denver and St. Barnabas 11 years ago. Now, this city is my home. I volunteer at the Botanic Gardens, but St. Barnabas is very special to me. I am a Christian, and this is a place I can worship and serve.
“It’s what I do.”

Spiritual Tools for Survival
We will continue to explore spiritual tools for survival by participating in the ancient monastic practice of the Daily Office. The Episcopal Book of Common Prayer includes several services of the Daily Office for personal or group use. Patti Anderson and Chris Bauer will talk about this spiritual practice and then lead the group in Noonday Prayer. The service can be a short contemplative respite in the middle of a stressful day, varied according to the needs of the moment. Chris does it the old-fashioned way with the BCP but Patti is more up to date, and uses an app on her smartphone. Join us for an interesting and fun session on October 8, 2018, 11:00 am, Grant Hall.

We have an urgent need for simple, basic, housing for a parish staff member. Do you have a modestly-priced basement apartment, or guestroom area where he could stay for a few weeks or months? Please contact

We ask for your prayer for all those affected by disasters in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, and beyond.
O Lord Our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. (BCP p395, Collect at the Prayers #5)

Dive Deep into Spirit Wednesdays Nights starting in January
A St. Barnabas Contemplative Compline (day’s end service in community) will launch based on input from Forum brainstorming and interest from several parishioners. Combining spiritual reflection, theological inquiry, personal sharing and ancient monastic ritual, we’ll seek a peace point in the rhythm of our weeks. After mindfully gathering ourselves we’ll discuss a text (initially Howard Thurman’s Jesus and the Disinherited) that spiritualizes a problem of our day, share relief in mutual prayer, and culminate with the short Compline liturgy. Like all STB programs it will be evolved through its practice by those participating.
Starts:
January 10, 2018 6:30–8:00 p.m.,
at St. Barnabas, and continuing every Wednesday evening. Drop-ins welcome! Contact
Chris Bauer
for more information or to get on mailing list.

Encore Performance of Songs for Humanity
|
|
For everyone who missed their “Songs for Humanity” benefit concert back in August, Erin Bell, Stephanie Hood and Matt Kingham will be giving an encore performance on
Saturday, November 4 at 7:00 pm in Lukens Wing
. This benefit recital for the Southern Poverty Law Center was so well received that they were encouraged to perform it again with the simple hope that more people would be able to hear the fantastic program of opera, art song, and musical theater - including a scene from Wicked provided to the trio by the composer, Stephen Schwartz!
Again, every dollar donated will be given directly to the SPLC. Please put this event on your calendar, share it with your friends, and bring your donations to hear this powerful, delightful and moving program. Please contact
Erin Bell
for more information, and share the Facebook event with your friends.
