Sometimes, I feel like those of us who live in Bloomington live on an island. Highway 37 is a causeway that connects us to the mainland (the rest of Indiana). And the causeway is frequently nearly impassable.

A Message from the First Methodist Outreach Team
Providing Relief to Hurricane Victims

Our hearts continue to be broken by the destruction, damage, and loss caused by recent natural disasters--hurricanes, floods, fire. As a congregation and members of the Body of Christ, we want to reach out, be the hands and feet of Jesus, to those suffering.
Right now, the two most important things we can do are to Pray and to Give

How to Pray:
  • Give thanks for God's presence and God's love that has been poured out through people around the world.
  • Pray that God would provide places to live for people who need it
  • Pray for government agencies to work efficiently and quickly to meet the many needs these communities have.
  • Pray that God would protect families who are rebuilding from unethical and incompetent contractors and tradesmen.
  • Pray for our first responders who are exhausted.
  • Pray for those who are grieving the loss.
  • Pray for kids. and teachers. Schools will open again and be full of teachers and kids who have suffered loss.
  • Pray for local businesses. There has been great loss in area businesses
  • Pray for our government officials who have to make a lot of decisions - that God would guide each and every one and give them wisdom.
  • Thank God for all the churches, businesses and nonprofit organizations who have mobilized to help. Pray God's blessing on them and that God would direct each on how to use their time, expertise and resources in the most efficient manner.
  • Pray against donor fatigue - and that also goes for volunteer fatigue.

How to Give:
  • The most efficient and practical way for us to assist as a congregation at this time is to give money through the church to UMCOR. All funds are used 100% for the needs of the hurricane victims. You can write a check to the church and/or place your gift in an envelope and note "Hurricane" on it. Funds are used for helping people rebuild, helping businesses reopen, providing flood buckets for clean-up, and much more.
  • Sometimes it is easier to give when you know a specific amount: Flood buckets costs $65 and hygiene kits are $12. Consider working together as a family to give enough to pay for one flood bucket. Consider making a goal for your small group to give enough to pay for 3 or 4 flood buckets or 10 hygiene kits. Every donation is greatly appreciated!
The First Methodist Outreach Team will continue to explore how we as a congregation can assist in relief effort, such as sending mission work teams to the area. Thank you so much for your continued generosity and outpouring of love to these individuals in need.

A Prayer for Today
Under a leaf, in a snowflake
In a blade of grass, in a raindrop
All parts of nature

In your parents' loving embrace
In the phone call from your grandparents
All family relationships

In working and sharing with others
In helping the unfortunate
All volunteering jobs

Where are you able to find God?

Lord, help me to find you in all ways and walks of life.

Amen.

New Member Class * Oct 15 & 22
What are the core beliefs driving First United Methodist Church, The Open Door, and everything we do? What is this church's mission, its position on key social issues, its plans for the future, and how did it get started? Are there places for me to put my talents to work for God in a world-changing way? How do I connect and build relationships here? How do pastors come and go, what is Jubilee, and is it true that all people are welcome here?

Join us for the next 2-session adult New Member Class on October 15th and 22nd (Sundays) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Led by our pastors, Mark Fenstermacher & Teri Crouse, these sessions are informal and cover a lot of ground. Participants are encouraged to ask questions.

If you wish to be a part of the New Member Class please RSVP to fumcb@fumcb.org. $7 donation per person for the new member resource book. Those books can be picked up on Sunday morning, Oct 8th, or during the week at the front desk of our church office.

Join us for this time of conversation, spiritual exploration, and faith-building as we get to know one another. (Note: Taking this class does NOT indicate that you have decided to join the church. We encourage people to make that decision after they have gone through the class and gathered the information they need to make a faithful decision.)
