New Online Tracker Shows How States Will Hold Schools Accountable Under ESSA
Achieve
Achieve today released a new online tracking tool that summarizes the components of states' accountability plans as submitted to the U.S. Department of Education under the requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The tool also allows for users to compare states' accountability metrics. As part of ESSA, every state was required to create and submit a plan to hold its K-12 schools accountable for student performance. Achieve's new tool summarizes states' goals for student achievement and graduation rates, along with the other indicators and weighting that states plan to use for accountability purposes. Continue reading here.

Bill creates STEM Grant Program for veterans
UP Matters
State Representative Scott Dianda (D-Calumet) introduced House Bill 5161 recently that would establish the Battlefield to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Educational Grant Program for Michigan veterans who are enrolled in STEM degree programs at Michigan's public community colleges and universities."According to the most recent federal statistics, unemployment for post-9/11 Michigan veterans was more than 6 percent, and we hear often that STEM jobs here in Michigan are going unfilled because we aren't producing enough graduates to fill STEM career pathways," said Dianda. "Offering this grant program will encourage our veterans to stay in a STEM program that will prepare them for stable, well-paying jobs. That's a win-win for our state and our veterans," said Dianda. Growing Number of States Embrace Career Education
Education Week
After years of focusing intensely on college readiness, states are turning their attention to students' futures as workers, enacting a flurry of laws and policies designed to bolster career education and preparation. "What we're seeing is that there's been a shift from focusing purely on college readiness to thinking also about career readiness," said Jennifer Thomsen, who analyzes policy for the Education Commission of the States. "For the longest time, the 'career' part just kind of dropped off. But now, states are really getting back to the idea that college and career readiness really does mean both of those things  ." STEAM from the Gridiron
SmartBrief
What happens when students experience science, technology, engineering, arts and math through lessons about football? Practical learning, says Jesse Lovejoy, director of STEAM education and the San Francisco 49ers Museum. "Sports are generally understood and compelling," says Lovejoy. "They also happen to be a great lens through which to examine the subjects of STEAM or any other subject really." Lovejoy coordinates the 49ers STEAM education program, launched in 2014 at Levi's Stadium. The initiative, part of the 49ers Foundation that serves K-8 students in Bay Area schools, aims to provide students with a real-world look at STEAM using the concepts of football. I spoke with Lovejoy about what it takes to capture students' interest and open their eyes to the possibilities in STEAM fields. Here are some of his top tips: Read more here.

Tech Inclusion: There's No App For That
Medium
Three Trillion. Yes, $3 trillion is the value of the top five U.S tech companies. Zero. Yes zero, is the estimated median wealth of Black Americans by 2053 if current trends continue. America, we have a problem.
The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) launched CBC TECH 2020 in May 2015 to bring together the best minds in the tech, non-profit, and public sectors to increase African American inclusion at all levels of the industry. In August 2015, we went to Silicon Valley to press the case with tech leaders. Continue reading here.
You Can Help Build the World's First Open-Source, Zero-Net Energy Vessel!
KoKa Media
A nonprofit organization in Oregon is inviting the world to collaborate in an open-source project to transform a 91-year-old, 82-foot wooden yacht named Denali into Z-NEV; the world's first open-source, zero-net energy vessel that would serve as a learning lab where people can explore a wide range of clean technologies and STEM concepts. KoKa Media, the Portland-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization spearheading the project, was formed to promote lifelong STEM learning for all, by developing collaborative projects and producing immersive educational experiences using interactive technologies.
