Statement from Bishops United Against Gun Violence Following the Las Vegas Shooting

Bishops United Against Gun Violence, a group of more than 70 Episcopal Church bishops working to curtail the epidemic of gun violence in the United States, of which Bishop Mark Beckwith is a co-convener, released this statement on October 2, 2017:

We share in the grief and horror of people across our country and, indeed, around the world in the wake of last night's mass shooting in Las Vegas. We have spoken with our Bishops United Against Gun Violence colleague and brother in Christ, Bishop Dan Edwards of the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada, and we have offered him and the people of Nevada our prayers and promises of assistance. We stand in solidarity with the diocese and the people of Nevada as they cope with this massacre. Read more.

In letter, Episcopal bishops implore President and Congress not to end DACA

Bishop Mark Beckwith was one of 125 Episcopal bishops who signed this letter imporing the President and Congress not to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), that was published as an ad in the NY Times on September 21, 2017: read the letter.

Bishops close meeting in Alaska with letter urging 'prayerful listening' on race, environment, poverty

The Episcopal Church's House of Bishops approved a letter to the church on Sept. 26 invoking the bishops' experiences in Alaska listening to the stories of the state's indigenous people, and they called on Episcopalians to join them in working toward environmental and racial justice. Read more.

Joining God in Shaping Our Future - The journey continues

The morning of Saturday, September 30, teams from several congregations met at Episcopal House to either explore or continue the journey of Joining God in Shaping Our Future. After Dwelling in the Word together, those attending in order to learn more about the Listening Excursion practiced listening and story-sharing exercises, while the teams involved in Going Local met with John McLaverty of The Missional Network to share their experiments and discernment, and plan next steps. Meanwhile, those who started in the first round of the Listening Excursion last March will meet on Saturday, October 28 for a report-out session.

Congregations work in partnership across town, state lines to aid hurricane victims

Two churches in the diocese have followed different paths to a similar destination, raising thousands of dollars in aid for the victims of the recent hurricanes.

At Christ Church, Bloomfield & Glen Ridge, the vestry voted at its September meeting to devote the entire outreach budget to provide matching gifts for hurricane relief - which prompted an unanticipated response from congregations and individuals across the diocese.

Meanwhile, St. John's, Passaic started a spiritually rewarding relationship with an Episcopal Church in hard-hit Angleton, Texas. Read more.

Episcopal Relief & Development (ER&D) has worked with church partners for more than 75 years to provide much-needed assistance around the world. It has an "A" rating from Charity Watch, and earns four stars (out of four) from Charity Navigator. On Saturday, September 16, 2017, the   Lutheran Episcopal Advocacy Ministry of New Jersey  (LEAMNJ) hosted the first annual Justice Gathering. Almost 150 people of faith from all over the state of New Jersey gathered together to listen, learn, collaborate, and worship. The event took place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cross Roads Camp and Retreat Center in Port Murray, New Jersey. Read more.
