What do YOU need to solve your own school nutrition puzzles? SNA's
School Nutrition Industry Conference (SNIC), January 21-23, 2018 in New Orleans is designed to help you identify the missing pieces.
 There's one thing you can say of those who embrace a career in the K-12 school nutrition segment--whether as an operator or an industry partner--you relish a good challenge! That's because school nutrition is arguably the most complex foodservice business. The variety of factors at play are reminiscent of a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle. School Wellness Award

It's time to apply for the
2018
School Wellness Award
! For the 11th year in a row, the School Wellness Award will be given to three Oregon schools. Supported by the
Oregon Department of Education (ODE)
, the
Nutrition Council of Oregon
, and the
Oregon Dairy and Nutrition Council
, the awards recognize schools' efforts in putting their local wellness policies into action and making the connection between nutrition, physical activity and academic achievement.
Winning schools will receive a $2,500 check to enhance nutrition and physical activity at their school, a banner and a signed plaque in recognition of their achievement.
The application deadline is January 31, 2018.
Oregon schools who are actively working to improve student and staff wellness should
apply via Survey Monkey
. The application must be completed at the time the Survey Monkey form is accessed, so it's a good idea to download, print and complete the

first.

OSNA ANNUAL INDUSTRY SEMINAR A BIG SUCCESS
|
|
Approximately 90 school nutrition professionals and industry suppliers attended the
OSNA Annual Industry Seminar and USDA Foods Show on Oct. 13. The day's events included two motivational presentations by keynoter Patrick Henry of "Lunch Lady Blues" fame, and a student panel discussion featuring 6th-12th graders from Willamina School District.
According to Industry Committee co-chair
Lynne Shore of Sheridan School District, this year's event was "the biggest yet" with both a high number of registered attendees and a sold-out exhibit space. "Thank you to everyone for a fabulous show and seminar on Oct. 13. We think it was extremely well attended. The student panel was again a huge hit, and our speaker, Patrick Henry, was great and kept everyone well entertained."

JG Neil's Suzann Kayser, Industry Committee co-chair, added that the costume drive for the Chelsea's Closet Foundation was also a big success. "We collected 64 costumes, and $215.00 in cash to spend on more items for the charity. More will costumes are expected to come in after the seminar, which will be a really great donation to a terrific cause."
"The OSNA Industry Seminar continues to be a great option for school nutrition staff who need professional development hours," added Shore. "These events help district directors provide more options for their staff to access PD hours and meaningful training."

HELP USDA SIMPLIFY SCHOOL MEAL PAPERWORK
|
|
 The School Nutrition Association (SNA) is asking that nutrition professionals respond to a request from USDA for comments on how to simplify the paperwork required from school meal programs. SNA has an easy-to-complete form on its Action Center web page. Log on and have your say!

HEALTHY BREAKFAST HELPS KIDS LEARN ACT OF 2017
|
|
The
School Nutrition Association (SNA) and the
American Commodity Distribution Association (ACDA) have joined forces to support The
Healthy Breakfast Helps Kids Learn Act of 2017
(HR 3738). This bill would provide an
additional 6 cents in commodity support for the School Breakfast Program (SBP).
This means that if the bill were to pass, schools would receive 6 cents for each breakfast served to spend on commodities. As of this time, there is no commodity support for breakfast, only lunch.

 The 2017-2018 OSNA Annual Directory is now online. This year's guide to Oregon's school foodservice decision makers and suppliers was the largest we've published in its 23-year history, weighing in at 80 pages! So large, in fact, that we had to split the downloadable PDF into two parts.

STUDY AHEAD FOR THE SNS CREDENTIAL EXAM IN MARCH
|
|
 OSNA is pleased to announce that it will again host the SNA School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) Credential Exam at the association's annual State Conference. The exam will be held on Friday, March 9 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.
SNA established the School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) Credentialing Program in 1997 to enhance the professional image of school nutrition professionals, elevate professional standards and enhance individual performance.
