SOS - CALLING ON THE RESEARCH COMMUNITY
Help the disaster relief efforts in Puerto Rico
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As you are aware, Hurricane Maria has had a devastating impact in Puerto Rico. The Caribbean Primate Research Center (CPRC) facilities, both Sabana Seca Field Station and Cayo Santiago, were no exception. The mounting catastrophic damage continues to be assessed and relief efforts are ongoing.

Within a few hours after the height of the hurricane and while risking their own lives, the dedicated staff at CPRC initiated the recovery efforts. A ll animals have been secured along with food/water supplies despite the extremely difficult situation.  What the staff has accomplished with minimal to no resources, is the result of heroic efforts.

However, there is a lot more that needs to be done to stabilize and operationalize both facilities.  Recovery will not be possible without the  generous  support and contributions of the organizations and individuals who recognize the unique role of CPRC in serving the biomedical and behavioral research community.

The CPRC staff is just like you and I. They are researchers, veterinarians, animal care staff, vet techs, operations, facilities, maintenance and administrative staff, leaders, teachers, students and parents with  children and  families to support and ensure their well-being. Regardless of the job function, one thing they all have in common with the rest of us, is their dedication to the research community and the betterment of animal and human life.
Better Research Better Life Foundation (BRBLF) has made a commitment to provide support and relief to CPRC and has been actively communicating with CPRC leadership and staff overseeing the facility. Our short-term strategy was to address the following:
  • Re-establish communications: BRBLF has donated 4 satellite phones to facilitate effective communications. These phones have allowed CPRC staff and leadership to re-establish communications within CPRC and externally.
  • Provide food, water, generators and construction material among other essentials which are urgently needed for the CPRC facility, staff and their families. There is a collaborative effort among academia, industry and governmental agencies to acquire and transport the necessary supplies to CPRC as soon as possible.
By gathering funds and resources to accomplish the above short-term objectives, we can help stabilize the conditions and focus on the rebuilding efforts.

We encourage you to help support the relief efforts through donations to BRBLF or to another charitable organization of your choice. BRBLF is a 501c3 non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the betterment of research. One of BRBLF's core objectives is to assist the research community, and we hope to garner your support in achieving that objective during this catastrophic event.  Please feel free to share this message with others who may have an interest in supporting the relief efforts.

All donations will go to the victims of Hurricane Maria at CPRC and are fully tax deductible.
