Members: Apply for a County Award by Nov. 1st
Macomb County 4-H members are invited by the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council and MSU Extension 4-H staff to complete an award application for their 2016-17 4-H projects.
Competition in 4-H gives members a medium to reflect on and then demonstrate what they have learned in their project areas. It also helps them to develop important life skills.
Fair gives members the opportunity to reflect on what they learned through an interview with a judge (verbal communication).
County Awards give youth the opportunity to put down on an application what they have learned in their project area (written communication).
The Top 4-H'er program increases the members level of effort by combining both a more intense application and an interview with a panel of judges.
As members progress in their 4-H experience mastering their skills in their project areas. So should they progress in their ways of competition.

4-H Awards Workshop - Oct. 8th
4-H'ers ages 11-19 can get tips on applying for county and state 4-H awards by attending the 4-H Awards Application Preparation Workshop from 1-4 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the Grange Hall at the Armada Fairgrounds in Armada. The flyer states the participant age range of 13-19, however, because the workshop will also help those applying for county awards, youth who are ages 11-12 may also attend. R.S.V.P. to 586-469-6090.

President, Treasurer elected to the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council
Richards and Bennett elected Sept.14th.

Thursday, September 14th was a bittersweet meeting for Macomb County 4-H Youth Council. Nominations were taken for the upcoming 2018 program year at the regularly scheduled meeting at Camp Rotary. Elizabeth Bennett of K-9 & Kompany 4-H Club is the new Macomb County 4-H Youth Council President and Jillian Richards of City Slickers 4-H Club remains for a second term as Treasurer.
We also said good-bye and thank you to our past serving officers: President Maggie Bohm of Pirates 4-H Club, Vice President Payton McComsey of City Slickers 4-H Club, Secretary Elizabeth Bennett of K-9 & Kompany and Jillian Richards of City Slickers 4-H Club. We would like to give a huge thank you particularly to President Maggie Bohm. Maggie has

served the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council for three years now, first as treasurer and then two terms as president. Her passion and love for 4-H is without question. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
Nominations for the position of Vice President and Secretary will be accepted until the next Macomb County 4-H Youth Council meeting, which is set for October 19th 6:30 p.m. at Macomb County MSU Extension in Clinton Township.
Goat, poultry quiz bowl teams forming
Macomb County will be forming quiz bowl teams to compete in the 2018 State 4-H Goat Expo and the Michigan State 4-H Poultry Show. There will be two separate teams representing Macomb County, one at the Goat Expo and one at the Poultry Show. We are looking for interested youth who are dedicated
to in-depth learning on these animals. Team members will be sent study guides and will meet either monthly or bi-monthly to display their knowledge and practice the quiz bowl format. Goat and Avian ownership is not required, only an interest in learning about these animals is needed. A big thanks
goes out to 4-H volunteer Sheila Hribar for stepping up to lead these teams at the state competitions. Please contact Seth Martin, 4-H Program Coordiantor, at 586-783-8163 if you're interested so that staff can determine if our county has enough youth
to form these teams.

4-H Project Clover donates livestock sale purchases to local food pantries
Alarro 4-H Club's Project Clover program dispersed $10,000.00 worth of beef, pork, lamb, goat, poultry, waterfowl and rabbit that was purchased from the Alarro youth members during the 2017 Armada Fair Livestock Sale. On Saturday September 16, 2017, Alarro 4-H Club members and volunteers met with its five food pantry volunteers to help them load up nearly 400 pounds each of market product to fill their community pantry shelves. It was another successful year for Alarro's 4-H Project Clover! The product went to food pantries in Richmond, Capac, Romeo, Imlay City and Armada.
Thank you to all of the wonderful sponsors, youth members and Alarro 4-H Club leaders. Without their support, 4-H Project Clover would not be the community service project that it is today. A special thank you to C-Roy and Son for their donation of all processing and packaging!

Tractor Supply Company Paper Clover Fundraiser - Oct. 4-15
Is your 4-H club looking for a fun way to host a fundraiser or recruiting event? Consider advertising 4-H at during the Tractor Supply Company (TSC) Paper Clover Event from October 4th-15th. These events are held twice a year and are a great time to fund raise and promote your 4-H club. Previous events have included a petting farm, selling baked goods and popcorn, passing out flyers to customers and more. All of you are encouraged to reach out to your local TSC store and make arrangements with the store manager. Macomb County has two TSC locations: New Haven TSC, 57155 Gratiot Ave., (586) 749-6162; and Romeo TSC, 66143 Van Dyke, Washington Township, (586) 752-4356. 4-H Youth Chopped! - Nov. 18th
4-H Youth Chopped! is from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Nov. 18, 2017 at Max Thompson Family Resource Center, 11370 Hupp Ave., Warren. This is a FREE event for youth ages 11-18 who want to challenge their inner chef by creating flavorful food while learning about nutrition, food safety, and the process of farm to fork. Horse Judging, Hippology and Horse Bowl project meetings - 4-H'ers welcome
Macomb County 4-Hers are welcome to attend project meetings for Horse Judging, Hippology, and Horse Bowl at Goodells County Park at 6:30 p.m.on October 2nd, November 6th, December 4th, TUESDAY January 2nd, February 5th, March 5th, and April 2nd. El Dia de los Muertos! - Oct. 21st
El Dia de los Muertos! is from 1-6 p.m. on October 21, 2017 at Max Thompson Family Resource Center, 11370 Hupp Avenue, Warren, and is open to youth who are ages 5-12. Participants in this event will learn more about Latino culture while experiencing traditional El Dia de los Muertos activities. Reserve the 4-H Children's Art Exchange Kit
In cooperation with the People's Republic of China, the Michigan 4-H China Project makes a Children's Art Exchange Kit available free to schools, 4-H clubs and other youth groups. The program gives youth in grades K-6 the opportunity to exchange "visual letters" with youth in Shandong Province, China. Artwork submitted by Michigan youth participants could be selected to go to China, be part of a traveling statewide exhibit, or be part of an online exhibit. Become a 4-H volunteer
Volunteers play a very important part in making the 4-H programs in Macomb County fun and rewarding for youth, and new volunteers are always welcome!
Adults who want to become 4-H volunteers need to complete the 4-H volunteer selection process (VSP). VSP consists of an application, background and reference checks, an interview, and completion of online training modules. Start the process today by submitting the application to [email protected]! Macomb County 4-H Youth Council responds to Fair suggestions

The Macomb County 4-H Youth Council wants to let you know that your voices are being heard. Some of the Council's responses to your suggestions about the Armada Fair are below.
*Better advertising for food court. Signs Sandwich boards in traffic areas
-We are limited as to what advertising we are allowed on the fair grounds. We are allowed certain size signage in the coffee cart area.
*Coffee cart should offer unique items patrons cannot get elsewhere at fair. Healthy options especially, protein bars, vitamin H2O), umbrellas, ear plugs, salad.
-Will look into protein bars and vitamin H2O, will see if the price of umbrellas would be profitable (discussed maybe ponchos instead), ear plugs are sold by the armada fair information booth (great idea and we can try but not sure if they will allow it), we are limited to prepackaged foods.
*4-H needs microphone or music playing to attract attention to food booth.
-not sure if that will be allowed but can look into it.
*Cloversprout division for 4-H goats. Also, Project books for cloversprouts in ALL areas.
-This is up to Armada Fair Board not 4-H. Nancy said that it can be looked into if you'd like to bring this up at a fair board meeting. The fair book is not due for official review and changes until 2020, but if something needs to be changed in the meantime it can be discussed.
*Auction for 4-H crafts. Fowlerville Fair does and it brings a lot of attention for participation.
-Are looking into how that would work. People would have to pick up their crafts Sunday night when fair is over. Would need approval from the fair board. If you would like to head this up please let us know

*Move food barn out past barn roofline. Use area behind kettle corn-ads for 4-H food.
-coffee cart barn almost fell apart getting it into position there. Will not be able to withstand a move.
*Coffee cups too hot, burns my hands.
-profit on coffee is very small and cannot afford to get the sleeves for cups. Discussed trying to get a company like Tim Hortons to donate for advertising on the cups but not sure that would be approved by Armada Fair Board. Discussed making the reusable cozies to sell as an additional item. Maybe have kids make them in a craft workshop?
*Please have coffee stirrers. Keep creamers in cup of ice! Sunday PM
-Saturday night someone spilled our stirrers all over the ground and we ran out of them. The creamer does not need to be kept cold.
*Glass Etching/Glass Mosaic
-We would LOVE to add these to craft days. If you are trained in these areas (or know someone who is) and would like to teach them at a craft workshop please let us know

Parliamentary Procedure and Club Leader Trainings in Oakland County
Oakland County is hosting two club management workshops for club officers and leaders on November 4
th at the Executive Office Building - East Room, 2100 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford Township.
- 10 a.m.-noon Parliamentary Procedures and Officer Roles.
- 1-3 p.m. Club Bylaw Writing Workshop
Registration is $6 per session or $10 for both sessions. It includes lunch from Mr. Pita.
4-H Creative Arts Celebration - Nov. 18-19
The Michigan 4-H Creative Arts Celebration, Nov. 18-19, 2017 at Kettunen Center in Tustin is for youth and adults ages 12 and older who
are willing to re-teach the skills they learn and knowledge they gain in their communities. Participants will:
- Get energized with lots of new ideas for working with youth in visual arts, crafts, clothing and textile projects.
- Learn how youth can develop life skills by participating in the arts.
- Support and encourage creativity in 4-H projects.
- Discover how leadership, citizenship, entrepreneurship, career development, and science skill development can be a part of your projects.
- Meet and share ideas with 4-H teen and adult volunteers from around the state
- Develop a county plan of action for using the new knowledge and skills back home.
Apply for the Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council
What is Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council (SYLC)? Established in 2015, the Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council is a statewide leadership opportunity for 4-H youth. SYLC members serve as representatives of the Michigan 4-H program, promoting 4-H through state and local activities, and can provide youth voice and perspective on the development of 4-H programs and curricula. SYLC members are also provided an opportunity to represent Michigan in attendance at the National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C.
Who is eligible? Any 4-H participant, age 15-19 by January 1, 2018, can apply for a council position. They must be currently enrolled in a 4-H program, in good standing in their local 4-H club or unit, and have completed at least the previous year of 4-H work. Youth are selected for the council by application and interview with a state committee of MSU Extension staff. SYLC member terms are two years.
When/where do they meet? The Council meets monthly through Zoom online video conferencing and holds at least two in-person meetings in conjunction with other state 4-H events: 4-H Teen Leadership and Global Citizenship Spectacular (Kettunen Center, January) and 4-H Exploration Days (MSU campus, June).
Why would youth be interested in SYLC? SYLC members receive training on public speaking, advocacy, communication and leadership skills. SYLC is Michigan's highest youth leadership opportunity and is a goal that older youth can aspire toward. SYLC members get to broaden their network and expand their knowledge of 4-H programs beyond their counties.
How do youth apply? Interested youth should complete an electronic survey, which will serve as their application. The link to the application will be posted online at http://msue.anr.msu.edu/program/info/sylc once it is active. Applicants must also select two adults, one being their 4-H Program Coordinator, to complete a reference. The deadline to apply for 2018 is October 27, 2017. Selected applicants will be contacted by SYLC advisors to arrange time for an interview following the closing date.
How does SYLC benefit Michigan 4-H? Michigan 4-H believes that youth should be participants, rather than recipients in the learning process. Staff teach volunteers about strengthening youth voice and youth-adult partnerships at the club and county level. SYLC provides an outlet for youth voice at the state level. As staff plan new programs, design promotional tools or create curriculum geared at high-school age groups, contact the SYLC advisors and ask to get on an upcoming SYLC agenda.
4-H Equine Welfare Assessment Guide

Equine welfare science is an emerging discipline. The guide will help youth learn equine welfare principles as well as how to better care for their horses. It is designed to assist horse leaders in providing a way to teach and improve important skills for life such as clear oral communication, information gathering, analytical thinking and observation. There are also sample scenarios as a supplement to the welfare assessment.

Accepting Nominations for Michigan 4-H Salute
to Excellence 2018 Volunteer Recognition Awards
The Michigan 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer Recognition Awards recognizes 4-H volunteers
who demonstrate exemplary service to Michigan 4-H and the youth who participate in our programs, while promoting service through volunteerism as both an opportunity and a privilege. These awards are patterned after the National 4-H Salute to Excellence Awards and are designed to provide an opportunity to recognize Michigan 4-H volunteers on the state, regional and national level.
The two categories of awards include Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer, for a current or former 4-H
volunteer who has served 4-H'ers for ten or more years, and the Volunteer of the Year, for currently serving volunteers that have served for less than ten years at the county or state level.
Nominees are selected on the following criteria:
- Evidence of positive impact on the lives of 4-H youth.
- Demonstrated ability to work with young people in a way that promotes youth empowerment, decision
making, problem solving, meeting challenges and mastery.
- Dedication to youth/adult partnerships and developing mentor-learner relationships.
- Evidence of a positive impact on the 4-H program.
- Innovative approaches to engaging new youth and increasing diversity among participants.
- Dedication to providing a safe and inclusive environment for youth.
- Innovative approaches to performing volunteer service, recruitment of additional 4-H volunteers,
partnering with other youth-serving agencies, fundraising, providing other resources for 4-H,
advocacy for 4-H, etc.
- Demonstrating a professional attitude, character and morals.
- Personal growth from being a 4-H volunteer.
Winners and honorable mentions from the pool of nominations will be announced in November of 2017 and will receive a personalized plaque. The most qualified candidates will be forwarded to the National 4-H Council for consideration for regional and national recognition. Those awards are announced in February 2018 and April 2018, respectively.
The nomination process requires nominees (or their nominators) to work with their local 4-H program coordinator to complete a nomination form, a resume and assemble three letters of recommendation. If you are interested in nominating an outstanding volunteer in your community for the Michigan 4-H Salute to Excellence 2018 Volunteer Recognition Awards, contact your local 4-H program coordinator. All nomination materials must be submitted by your county staff person by October 15.
