The Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland will host Sustainable Maryland's annual Leadership Training workshops in November. This training series fosters leadership skills to engage diverse stakeholders, reduce contention, and garner support for sustainability initiatives.
This year's workshop topic, BUILDING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE, will incorporate examples, stories and tools that will help communities: define resilience; foster strategies to develop resilience actions; and improve participants' ability to communicate the importance of resilience to residents.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS
|
Sometimes little changes can have a big impact.
In the spring 2016 course at UMD- People, Places and Profit: Building Sustainable Places- undergraduate students were encouraged to find ways to make a difference in communities they care about through a semester long blog and video project. Students selected public places that were special to them and developed a plan to make that place more sustainable.
This month's student project spotlight,
Michael Wolak,
selected a stretch of roadway in front of the Regents Drive Garage on the UMD College Park campus. By redesigning a section of the road into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard with separate car, bus, and bike lanes, the university would be able to improve campus walkability for students and visitors while encouraging more sustainable modes of transportation. The inclusion of photovoltaic cells atop bus shelters, improved stormwater catchment, and student artwork displayed in a seating area protected from traffic will help the university foster better attitudes and experiences between faculty, students, and their local environment. HYATTSVILLE'S POLICE FLEET GETS A BOLT OF ELECTRICITY
|
The City of
Hyattsville recently purchased a new Chevy Bolt all-electric police car, believed to be the first of this model in the US to be outfitted for this purpose. SM staff assisted the City's police department in identifying funding for the vehicle via the
Maryland Smart Energy Communities program, and assisted them in navigating the application process to a successful result. Read more

UMD ONLINE CLASS: SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
|
Check out the Sustainable Community Development online class offered by the University of Maryland's Environmental Finance Center and Institute for Governmental Service and Research.
 When thinking about the place where you live, do you find yourself concerned about the well-being of people, perhaps including your own children or grandchildren, who will live there in years to come? And are you willing to be involved in helping to shape the future of your community? If your answers to these questions are "yes" and "yes" again, this class is for you.
This
FREE class takes about 2 hours and is designed for people who want to engage with neighbors and fellow residents through their local government to make their community a more sustainable place in which future generations can enjoy living, working, and playing. Although the methods apply broadly, the class emphasizes sustainable community development for counties and municipalities in the State of Maryland. And for municipal residents of Maryland, the class provides an introduction to the Sustainable Maryland program.
