Celebrating our Veterans
The 10th Annual Miami Township Veterans Breakfast is Thursday, Nov. 9, at 8 a.m. Time is running out to make reservations to attend. The deadline is Nov. 3, so here is some inspiration to attend from a local veteran who explains why it is such a worthy event:
Wounded Warriors Take Flight
Wright B Flyer, Inc. pulled out all the stops to welcome the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team to Miami Township. The team and other local veterans took the ride of a lifetime onboard the Wright B Flyer replica at the Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport in mid-October.
The softball team was in town to play a benefit game for the Fisher House, currently under construction on the grounds of the Dayton VA Medical Center.
“It was such a free feeling. As soon as we lifted off, I felt like a bird,” Mike Vanderveen, Vietnam War veteran, said.
Vanderveen is a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was serving with the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War in January 1969 when he stepped on a landmine and lost his legs. He is currently secretary of the Vietnam Veterans of America Miami Valley Chapter 97 in Dayton.
The Wright B Flyer is a replica of the Wright Brothers’ first mass produced airplane. You can visit the Wright B Flyer Museum at the Dayton Wright Brothers Airport on Springboro Pike just south of Austin Blvd.

Dayton Mall Area Master Plan in action
Miami Township is working with Seritage Growth Properties on a redevelopment plan for the now closed Sears Auto Center at the Dayton Mall. The plan includes an Outback Steakhouse and space for at least one additional tenant. The project is the first step of a long-term strategy under the Dayton Mall Area Master Plan to bring new uses and activity into the east end of the Dayton Mall site.
Recreational Trails a hit
Miami Township’s investment in the recreational trail system is paying off with more and more residents walking and biking their way to fitness. Our seven mile stretch is called the “Great-Little Trail."

The Miami Township Police Department is honored and proud to be a member of this task force that combats drug traffickers and couriers along the I-75 and I-70 corridors.

Township snow plow driver among state's best
Miami Township has one of the best snow plow drivers in the state! Jon Taylor placed second out of 48 drivers at the Public Works Officials of Southwest Ohio Snow Plow Truck Roadeo held in October!  The roadeo is an obstacle course using a dump truck with a snow plow attached. Awarded drivers finished within a targeted time limit and hit the fewest obstacles. Drivers had only a half hour to study the course before driving the course. Miami Township has participated in the event for more than 30 years.
Business Insider:
Hope Home Care
Hope Home Care is new to the township, celebrating its first anniversary. The company was founded in 2012. Meet Owners Ryan and Hope Mullikin (Photo: center with staff) in this month's Business Insider:

What’s new and exciting at your business?
We are in the process of launching our new non-skilled & private pay division called Hope Care Team. It will focus on providing personal care and homemaking services to those needing assistance through Passport, ComCare and other state programs. It will also provide many services to private pay clients.

What makes Hope Home Care special?
Hope Home Care has consistently been ranked 4.5 to 5.0 stars (out of 5) since the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began the home health star rating program in 2015. We have also been recognized as a Top Agency of HomeCare Elite for two years in a row which represents the top 25% of Medicare certified home healthcare agencies in the country. We make available high quality patient care to the homes of residents in Miami Township and surrounding areas.

How has the township contributed to your success?
Miami Township was extremely easy to work with when relocating our office last year. We were able to get approval from the township for a nice sign on our building that gave us great street front exposure to passing traffic.

What are your business hopes and goals for the future?
We simply want to help as many people as possible to achieve their highest level of functionality and independence in their own home, while showing them the love of Christ at the same time. We are first and foremost a Christian faith-based company. These are the principles that lead and guide the decisions we make and the care we provide each day.

Be Prepared for Winter
The Miami Township Road Department works to keep township streets clear of snow and ice during the winter months. Crews travel nine routes and prioritize which roadways are plowed first based on the amount of snow that falls.

Snowfalls of three inches or less are removed by using rock salt to melt the snow and takes snow plow crews about four hours to treat all township maintained streets. Snowfalls of more than three inches take more work. Roadways must be plowed and salted to clear heavy snow accumulation, taking crews at least 10 hours to complete one pass over all township roadways.

Township staff assess each snow event and make any route adjustments necessary to maintain motorist safety and ensure fiscal responsibility. Heavily traveled streets will be treated first, followed by streets with steep grades and select intersections. Not all roadways within Miami Township are maintained by our crews. Many are maintained by other governmental agencies or private contractors . Be sure to slow down and take your time while driving on slick roadways. Please call the Road Department at (937) 866-4661 with any questions or concerns.
