QCH welcomed Fall, special guests and exciting renovations!
|
On September 20, more than 60 Aramark employees spent the day at our Pomonok Community Center as part of the company's annual Aramark
Building
Community
Day.
Volunteers tackled a variety of revitalization projects throughout the center
. Teams created a new community food pantry, planted a Peace
Garden,
painted hallways
and
murals, and
offered free cooking demos to our neighbors (led by
Executive Chefs from Citi Field).
"We're incredibly grateful to Aramark and its dedicated
employees for
taking the time to share their expertise with our community
,"
said our Executive Director, Ben Thomases.
Our
Queens Center for Gay Seniors welcomed a delegation of
LGTBQ activists from Cuba on October 18, along with representatives from The Chicago Puerto Rican Cultural Center and The Latino Commission on AIDS.
The groups exchanged information about LGTBQ services available in their respective areas and discussed strategies, struggles, and successes achieved on behalf of their communities.
The meeting was arranged by Councilman Danny Dromm, who relayed his heartfelt thanks to our seniors. "It's because of you guys that we are where we are. You were the first fighters for LGTBQ People, and I think sometimes people
forget
that."
Colleagues, participants, and former participants gathered at QCH on September 28 to celebrate l
ongtime Teen Outreach Director Steve Pullano, who is retiring after 35 years with our organization.
Steve was responsible for designing and coordinating QCH's
renowned
"Hot Spots"
program. The model, which has been replicated citywide as well as in Budapest, utilizes street outreach and athletics as a way to engage disconnected youth hanging out in local parks and pizzerias, building relationships over time, and eventually connecting them to QCH's teen center and other youth programming.
"Steve has changed the course of my life" said Mike Zevon, a former Hot Spots participant, Teen Center director, and currently a parent coordinator with the Department of Education. "The man has had an enormous impact on the lives of tens of thousands of young people. How many of us can say that?"
Join us at our annual Strengthening Neighborhoods Inspiring Change Gala on October 25th!
This year's honorees are
John P. Albert of Bolton St. John's , John Dimino of M&T Bank, and The Queens Museum.
The gala will support our mission of providing individuals and families with tools to enrich their lives and build healthy, inclusive communities!
