San Juan Emergency Appeal
Update: October 24
WOW! and GRACIAS!
As your individual donations pour into Union Church Hurricane Relief Fund, the life-saving work of cleaning contaminated wells in Nicaragua continues.
Within days of the devastation and disaster that hurricane Nate caused, the pump we purchased has been transported to the hardest hit barrios and has reached approximately 20 wells as of this posting.
We have received dozens of photos and reports as the work continues. See below for one photo that showcases the pump at work.
Well Cleaning
.
The Austin Drill team,
Yelmer and Jixson at work.
What an amazing process. They pumped out muddy water for about an hour and then without any warning one of the men tied a rope to his waist and leaped over the edge of the well. He stood at the bottom in water up to his chest digging out mud and debris for a long time, maybe 45 minutes. Finally the water ran clean.

Book Group -- Multicultural Authors Series
October 31
st (last Tuesday of the month), at 7:00 p.m
As we approach a new season of literary exploration, we are offering a thoughtful collection of multicultural writing by authors representing the varied voices and perspectives of people who view the American experience from the standpoint of displacement and assimilation.
The partial list includes the following: 2016 Pulitzer Prizewinner, The Sympathizer by Viet Than Nguyen (Vietnamese-American), Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri (Indian-American), 2000 Pulitzer Prize winner, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (Nigerian), Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat (Haitian -American), books by Amy Tan (Chinese-American), Amara Lakhous (Algerian), Katherine Boo (American), and other suggestions from the group.
Our first meeting is on October 31st (last Tuesday of the month), at 7:00 p.m. Our first book will be The Sympathizer by Viet Than Nguyen, in tandem with the PBS series on the Vietnam War. For a copy of the book, please get in touch with Stacy (stacy@ucw.org).
Some suggested questions we can ask as we read these books are: What appeals to me in these multicultural writings? With what do I disagree? How does the book relate to the current climate of divergent views on immigration and a multicultural society? By reading stories different from my own, what universal themes do I see and identify with regarding love, family, loss, spirituality, and resilience in the human journey?
Feel free to invite others to our Book Group.
Thank you, Priscilla, Stacy, and Alan.

The All - Church Retreat was Fabulous!
Forty of us traveled to Rolling Ridge Retreat Center in North Andover last weekend for a glorious weekend of fun, fellowship and growing together for good. Check out some of the pictures from the retreat that are posted on the bulletin board outside the reception room, and stay tuned for the dates for next year's retreat!

REST, PRAY, HEAL AND FIND SOME PEACE
Open prayer space in memorial chapel.
Our lovely memorial chapel (to the right of the sanctuary when facing the altar) has been transformed into an open prayer space. We have heard from many of you that you would welcome a quiet place to pray either before or after the service and as such have created a warm and welcome space. Light a prayer candle, sit in silence, share your joys or concerns quietly with a friend.
Beginning this Sunday, Jay O'Beirne will be available in the chapel before the service for those who would like someone to pray with them or for them. As letter from James in the New Testament instructs "
Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord" (
James 5:14 (NRSV), Jay will be happy to be present to anyone who would like.
