FROSTBURG: A VISION OF MANY VOICES

Plots are delineated in new community garden in Frostburg

A recently registered Sustainable Maryland community, the City of Frostburg is now deciding what manner of sustainability progress its Green Team should direct its efforts towards. Sustainable Maryland's Leadership Training on metrics was perhaps an unlikely place to figure out how to develop a vision of its ideal future. The Leadership Training, titled Measuring What Matters, consisted of a full-day workshop held at three locations across Maryland in November, totaling 75 participants. Sustainable Maryland chose this year's topic to encourage metrics tracking in municipalities of all types, both to monitor progress and motivate improvement.

Continue reading about how metrics are guiding Frostburg's course of action.

SM CONTINUES STORMWATER STEWARDSHIP WORK IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY

Funded by a Stormwater Stewardship grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust (CBT), the Sustainable Maryland program has partnered with Prince George's County Department of the Environment (DoE) and the People for Change Coalition (PFCC) to launch this new County initiative to educate residents about the issue of pet waste and install infrastructure that will help communities address the problem.

Cottage City staff, elected officials and residents scouting suitable locations for new grant-funded pet waste stations

Following our well-attended Pet Waste Summit in April, SM staff began targeted work with the following municipalities: Bladensburg, Brentwood, Cottage City, Edmonston, District Heights, and Landover Hills, meeting with their Green Teams, town managers, elected officials, and residents to prepare customized outreach materials and communications plans, and to identify locations for new pet waste stations.

This summer will see both the installation of new pet waste stations as well as the continued roll-out of educational materials to residents via municipal websites, social media, listservs, newsletters and events. SM staff will be developing a County Pet Waste App that will allow users to search for locations of pet waste stations. We'll be checking in on our 6 muncipalities' efforts in future newsletters.

QUOTE

"Agreeing to uphold the goals of the Paris Agreement means that I am committing myself and our work in the city to ensure that we take our role as stewards of the environment and natural resources more seriously than we do already. Absent the leadership at the federal level, we cannot afford to punt the ball."

-- Mayor Candace Hollingsworth, City of Hyattsville

Sustainable Maryland is an initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. It is a free and voluntary program designed to help Maryland communities choose a direction for their sustainability efforts, improve access to resources needed to implement action, and recognize their accomplishments. Our sponsors include the Town Creek Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Maryland Municipal League. For more information about how your municipality can register in the Sustainable Maryland program, plus customized Green Team training and access to student resources that are available to provide consultancy services for municipal planning, please contact 301-405-7956 or mikeh75@umd.edu
