Garces vs. Liberty Tonight
Homecoming Game

Tonight is Homecoming and it's a BIG night on our campus!  Right after the JV game, the homecoming court will be introduced to the crowd and driven around the track.  We have three honorary alumni captains tonight who will be introduced to the crowd by Garces alumnus Jim Sakowski '70.  During the game, we have lots of cheerleaders as we have our future Ram cheerleaders performing alongside of all of our cheerleaders - frosh, JV and varsity cheer.  At halftime - there is quite a show for the crowd.  There will be a special performance by the cheerleaders, a dance/skit competition for the classes, and we will crown the Homecoming King & Queen.  The first homecoming queen, Mrs. Nancy (Taormina) Sewell '62 will crown the queen and last year's king, Conor Bruce '17, will crown the king.

ALUMNI DAY
Before the game - there are lots of activities for our alumni.  We start off with a brief talk in the chapel from our principal, Ms. Myka Peck. Then we have campus tours available at 5:00 PM. For those who haven't been on campus in awhile - there are lots of great changes to see.  The Alumni Tailgate starts at 5:30 and will be in the parking lot behind MLH. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the gate.  Tickets include dinner, drinks, t-shirt, and admission to the game.  It's for 21 and older only.

THE HERD
There will be a pre-game tailgate for The Herd in the quad.  It's open to all of our current Rams and to our Future Rams to get game-ready!

THE GAME
The football game is one of the most important games in town tonight.  The Garces Rams are 2-0 in league play and the Liberty Patriots are also 2-0 in league play.  Tonight's winner will most likely be the SWYL league champion.  BE THE 12TH MAN ON THE FIELD TONIGHT.  WE NEED TO BE LOUD! WE NEED TO BE PROUD!  AND WE NEED TO BE HERD! A special thank you to the Garces Parent Club for supplying pom poms to the Herd for the game tonight. LET'S GO RAMS!

If you can't make the game, you can listen to it on The Garces Radio Network 98.1 FM OR 1230 AM or watch it live-streamed on BVarsity at  bakersfield.com.   We are the BVarsity Game of the Week again this week.
2017 Homecoming Court

Congratulations to our 2017 Homecoming Court.  Tonight the Homecoming Court will be introduced before the start of the varsity game - so come early as we plan to start once the JV game is over - around 7:00 PM.  The homecoming court will be driven around the track with Mr. Brian Cobb reading a brief biography on each one.  The King and Queen will be crowned at half time.  Our senior princesses are Gabi Arias, Monica Uriaz, and McKenzie Miller.  Senior princes are Jack Tobias, Andrew Orozco, and Jack Logan.  Our junior prince and princess are Jack Waguespack and Sophie Bouldoukian.  Sophomore prince and princess are Joseph Campbell and Liz Sands.  Freshman prince and princess are Zelas Williams and Matea Thomas.
1st Place - Stock Market Challenge

Look out Wall Street!  The Garces team "Capital Gains" finished in 1st place out of 28 teams at the Junior Achievement 2017 Stock Market Challenge on Tuesday at CSUB.  Mr. Geissel opened up the competition to any student on campus who wanted to participate.  He ended up taking five teams to compete.  Congratulations to the winning team of Luke Champness, Emmet McCormick, Albert Lee, Quinn Coughlin, and Will Farr.  Great job Rams!

SAM TOBIAS FIELD
Tonight's Homecoming game at Sam Tobias Field will have a special meaning for Daniel, Jack and Nick Tobias as they will be playing on the field named in honor of their great-grandfather when it was built in 1952.

Sam was a prominent member of the local Jewish community who was among the school's earliest supporters.  He spearheaded the Booster's Club effort to build a stadium and gym on campus in the early 1950s.  For decades afterward, he continued to be one of the school's most active supporters in promoting Garces' educational endeavors and its Catholic mission.  Generations of his family have since attended Garces and played on their "home-field" for the school he so dearly loved.

In 1963 Saint Mary's College, Moraga honored Sam with their centennial year President's Award, stating:

"The Christian Brothers have come under the hand of your benevolence during the past fifteen years at Garces High School and for the past five years at Saint Mary's College. Your work in aiding Kern County youth in attending institutions of higher learning has earned you the St. Mary's College President's Award."

He received the inaugural Bob Carroll service award in 1987 and was inducted into the Garces Hall-of-Honor the year it was created in 2008.

Sam has since passed, but his family's tradition is still carried on at Garces today.  Sam would be proud.

Members of the Sam Tobias Family who are also Garces alumni are:

Josh Tobias '88 & his wife Justine (Gutierrez) Tobias '88 and their children Alyson Tobias '06, Sam Tobias '15, Matt Tobias '17, and Nick Tobias '19.

Jeremy Tobias '84 and his wife Susan (Etcheverry) Tobias '86 and their children Emily Tobias '11, Molly Tobias '12, and Jack Tobias '18.

Jason Tobias '85 and his wife Stephanie (Peters) Tobias '86 and their children Joseph Tobias '17, Catherine Tobias '19 and future Rams Olivia and Luke.

Justin Tobias '91 and his wife Courtney (Kirschenmann) Tobias '92 and their children Daniel Tobias '19, and future Rams Andrew and Madeline.

Lissa (Lingo) Beebe '87, Amy Gafford '90, Matt Gafford '95, and Clint Tobias '97.

RAM FACT:
Garces may be the only Catholic high school in the country with a stadium named after a member of the Jewish faith.
Meals with Love Club

The Meals with Love Club planned, shopped, and prepared a dinner for the residents staying at Ronald McDonald House in Bakersfield.  What a wonderful gift to give - a meal made with love to families who are in need of a small kindness and compassion while they are taking care of a sick child.  Nice job Rams!

Pictured are Club Moderators Ms. Andie Clarke and Mr. Nathan Holmes with club members
Alejandro Ramirez, Lavender Esparza, Ashley Ruiz,  Christina An, Belen Cazares, and Farah Abumeri.
Congratulations Allie Arretche

Congratulations to Allie Arretche who was honored by the Bakersfield Jockey Club at a special luncheon on Monday.  Allie was honored as an Outstanding Student Athlete in Girls Cross Country.  Congratulations Allie.  We are so proud of you.
Congratulations Nick Sill

Congratulations to Garces Ram Nick Sill!  For his fumble recovery and TD run against Centennial High School, Nick was named by Hometown Sports and by the Kern High Network as the "Game Saving Play of the Week".  Not one - but two awards for some great heads up football. Great job Nick!

Congratulations Isaiah Martin

Congratulations to Isaiah Martin on being selected by Hometown Sports as their "Hitman of the Week."  That is an honor usually reserved for defensive players, but not this week.  When Isaiah gets the ball, he goes to work and if you are in his way - watch out.  He's going to try and go right through you.

Congratulations on being Hitman of the Week Isaiah!  We are very proud of you and all of your hard work on and off the field.

Congratulations Jackie Sala

Congratulations to Garces Ram Jackie Sala on her third place finish in the SWYL Girls Tennis Championship.  Great job Jackie!  We are very proud of you.

Next up for Jackie is the CIF CS South Area Matches, and if she qualifies, she play in the CIF Valley Championship Matches.
Future Ram Cheerleaders!

At tonight's Homecoming Football Game - please look for our future Ram cheerleaders - or our "Mini's" as we fondly call them.  All of them came up to Garces during the week and learned several cheers to perform during the game.

We hope you enjoy watching them as much as we love having them on our campus.

A BIG thank you to all the mini-cheerleaders and their parents for joining us at the football game to cheer on our Rams!

Shout Out to Mrs. Jillian (Bischoff) Restivo, Ms. Sarah Reyna and the varsity cheerleaders for all their hard work with the mini's and on being homecoming-ready for tonight's game and half-time performance. .
Alumni Back on Campus
Johnny Soper '15 & Kylie Minor '15

Garces alumni Johnny Soper and Kylie Minor came back to speak at Garces on Thursday.  They are both juniors at Notre Dame University.  They came to discuss life at Notre Dame University, what makes Notre Dame special, and what it takes to be admitted.  They both love life at Notre Dame and they highly recommend it.  As Johnny Soper said, " A quote by Lou Holz says it all.  Those who know Notre Dame, no explanation's necessary. Those who don't, no explanation will suffice."  It was great to see them both today and even more importantly, to see how their Garces education helped to prepare them to be successful in college.
1984 US Olympian - Joe Vargas
Water Polo Guest Speaker

On Wednesday the Garces Water Polo teams were treated to an inspiring talk by U.S. Olympic Silver Medalist, Mr. Joe Vargas.  Mr. Vargas won a silver medal at the 1984 Olympics as a member of the USA Men's Water Polo Team. Mr.  Vargas was also a member of the gold medal winning teams at the 1979 and 1983 Pan American Games. He talked about some of the special moments of playing for the USA, how it felt to walk out of the tunnel into the stadium as part of Team USA, and what it takes to get to that level of play.
Ram for a Day - Friday, November 3rd

We can't wait for Ram for a Day.  It is one of our favorite days on campus. All 8th graders who are thinking about coming to Garces for high school are invited. We have all kinds of activities planned for them.  If you know of an 8th grader who is thinking about Garces,  please let him, or her, know about Ram for a Day.  It is a great opportunity for all the 8th graders to see who their classmates will be and what it is like on campus as a Ram.  There is also a parent program for those parents who would like to stay on campus and get to know more about Garces. Please contact Kim Harper, Director of Admissions with any questions or to RSVP.
Parent Faith Formation Talk #2
Mr. Tim Gordon
Thursday, October 26th
Garces Chapel at 7:15 PM

Garces invites all of our parents and others in the Garces Community who are interested in attending Mr. Gordon's upcoming talk Thursday evening.

Topic: The Church and Science after the Enlightenment, especially 20th Century Developments

The Roman Catholic Church saw its millennia-old doctrines on act and potency and creation ex nihilo vindicated through 20th Century science, particularly the (Catholic physicist's) Big Bang Theory and Quantum Theory.  Even the atheist Soviet Union recognized the undeniably Catholic nature of the "theistic" truth proven by the scientific community's acceptance of the Big Bang Theory, which is why all Soviet cosmologists were strictly forbidden to discuss or research the theory from its inception in 1927 until the 1960's, when its veracity became undeniable.  Since 20th Century science so robustly confirmed the truths of the Roman Catholic faith-with the single largest commission on cosmology and astrophysics belonging to the Vatican-why do so many anti-Catholic scientists still adhere to the woefully un-scientific worldview known as "scientism?"  The answer to this question hails back to the European Enlightenment three centuries prior to the Big Bang Theory, where one finds strong evidence of an ulterior motive behind post-Enlightenment scientism: the darkling source of Europe's "last superstition," atheism.
FALL SPORTS UPDATES
Football

So far it's been a very educational season.  The Rams entered the season with very little experience and have learned valuable lessons from each game.  The football program is heading in the right direction and it's only going to get better as they continue to believe and trust the process.

The Garces Rams beat Centennial last Friday night in an unbelievable battle on the field.  Our defense was stellar - they forced two fumbles in crucial situations and, with seconds to play, they stopped Centennial on a 4th down with a big play by Garces defensive safety #16 PJ Hernandez. The final score was Garces 28 Centennial 21. Isaiah Martin  had 121 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns, Joe Campbell threw a beautiful pass to wide-open Zachary Hebbard for a 77 yard TD.  The game winning TD was scored by defensive safety #11 Nick Sill who scooped up a fumble caused by a crushing hit by Garces defensive lineman Traveion Bell #99.  Nick picked up the ball and ran for 52 yards and he never looked back. Back to back phenomenal games for the Rams - defeating both BHS and Centennial after starting the season 0-5.  The Rams are 2-0 in league play and 2-5 overall.

Tonight the Garces Rams play the Liberty Patriots.  Both teams are 2-0 in the SWYL. This game is looking like it will be for the league title.  Isaiah Martin needs 77 yards to have 1,000 yards rushing for the season.

Girls Golf

This year has been a work in progress for the girls golf program here at Garces.  The team has had an influx of freshman who have been learning while playing and competing.  Garces has been blessed with the returning SWYL champs knowledge and calming attitude.

Our team has improved to the point of qualifying for the upcoming Area championship.  Not only have we qualified but are also contenders for winning the tournament.

Garces has 3 golfers with an excellent chance to play at Valley and also State.

Members of our Girls Golf team:
  • Grace Cornejo
  • Lauren Grijalva
  • Catherine Macias
  • Shannon Burdick
  • Claire Cornejo
  • Mandy Nguyen
  • Cristina Colina
  • Ella Martinez
Girls Tennis

Girls Tennis finished 2nd in the SWYL behind Stockdale.  We are seeded 5th in D1 valley and play at Clovis West next Wednesday, October 25th.

Alexsia Drulias won the singles SWYL title and Jackie Sala finished 3rd.  Alexsia and Jackie qualified for the area tournament, October 27 and  28th at Garces.

Cross Country

The Varsity Boys placed 6th in all SWYL meets.

The Varsity Girls placed 4th in all SWYL meets..  The Varsity Girls won the 2017 Golden West meet for the second time.

Next Month:
SWYL Championships will be held at Hart Park on Thursday 11/9.

On Thursday 11/16, the teams will head to Fresno for the Valley meet.

The boys team will compete in D4, the girls have been placed in D3.

The girls team is currently ranked 8th in this division.

Boys Water Polo

Varsity Boys:  23-4 overall record.  5-1 League.  On the surface, this team may seem as if they are a veteran team, but the reality is that we have a 1st year goalie (Ostin Woodfin), only 2 seniors (Lee Begin and Oliver Oxley), and only 1 returning starter from last year's Varsity team (Lee Begin).   The Center position is a tag team effort from Grayden Reynolds and George Rice.  Our transition game is led by Lee Begin, Eric Klang, Evan Berry and Oliver Oxley.  Our defense is anchored by Joe Starr at center defender and Ostin Woodfin in the cage.  This group has embraced the training regimen and has really committed themselves to the team and the common goal.  We had some early season setbacks, but really learned and grew from them.  With a tough loss to Porterville in the first round of league, we are looking to at least share the league championship with a couple more league wins.  We are positioned to be the #1 seed in the DII Valley playoffs, with home pool all the way through and are hoping to capture our 3rd Valley Championship.

JV boys: This team features 6 freshman with virtually no water polo experience and the team has really come together as we enter the final week of our season.  Similar to the girls, it took a few weeks to establish roles on the team so that each team member could find a way to contribute successfully to the team.
Girls Water Polo

Varsity Girls: 11-11 overall.  3-3 in league.  it took us about a month to establish roles within the team.  Once that happened, we were able to focus on each athletes strength and we have been able to put together some great defensive performances as well as some incredible offensive games.   Offensively, we are led by Laura Gonzalez, Annie Arriola, and Molly Soper.  Defensively Emma Antongiovani is our center defender and Claudia Millar is our last line of defense in the cage.  We are getting better each week as evidence by our results.  As we are wrapping up league, we are looking at entering playoffs as a bit of an underdog but as a team that is fully capable of making a deep run toward the valley Championship.

Message from
Mrs. Joan Finch
Director of Athletics

Dear Garces Community,

As the fall sports season concludes, I want to thank all Garces supporters... Parents, Coaches, Faculty, Staff, Alumnus and especially our wonderful students for an unforgettable start to the school year. As my time as an employee at Garces comes to an end, I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to all those people who gave me an opportunity to work at my alma mater for the past 15 years. It has been a pleasure to be a part of an amazing school like Garces Memorial. At a time when Catholic schools are struggling, it is more important than ever that we, as a Garces community, continue to provide a Catholic education to the Bakersfield community. It is the faith, traditions, and family that has bonded Garces for the past 70 years. It is why generations have sent their children to Garces...including myself and my parents. As a wise Garces administrator (Dr. Richard Tucker) once said, "may there always be a Garces."

As your athletic director, I hope I have made a positive impact on your student- athletes because they have made a positive impact on me. Sports add a richness to a school culture by providing opportunities for any student who wants them. It is the largest elective program on any high school campus. In the process of deriving enjoyment from participation in athletics, our students are learning life-long skills to help them develop into healthy adults and productive citizens. It is up to all of us, to create an environment where the students of Garces gain a love of competition and personal growth that will help them mature into productive and caring citizens. So, as we continue through the school year and you arrive at a gymnasium or athletic field, I hope for just a moment, you will reflect and appreciate that you are providing a few hours in your students' lives where they can escape reality, and just be kids, and for a few hours enjoy the fun, excitement and life-long lessons that only education-based athletics offers.

Now let's go out there and have some fun. Thank you for all your support....
