Thank you very much to everyone that attended our recent Open House. It looked like all of our guests had a wonderful time. The teachers and staff were so very proud to open our campus up to the school community. That being said, we did lose six school days last month due to Hurricane Irma. However, as this issue illustrates, our school is running back as normal and we have many exciting events scheduled for October and early November.
Kindly remember that school begins at 8:45 AM. The car rider line is slow around 8:25-8:35 AM and then gets really busy with the rush to get in before the bell rings. Please consider this if you drive your child to school in the morning.
We will hold our October PTA general meeting this Thursday at 5:30 PM. Members of the school community are always welcome as we greatly appreciate your feedback and involvement. Please make plans to attend for this once per month important hour. Thank you!
I hope you enjoy this current issue of
The Tiger's Roar! as we welcome in the month of October. Enjoy the rest of your week and, as always, thank you so much for your continued support.
Warm regards,
Agathe Alvarez
Proud Principal

Special Areas
Music News!
This week 4th and 5th grade music are learning about composers and careers in music, specifically the composer Michael Giacchino. We will discuss what the composer's intent was in writing music the way it sounds for different movie scenes.
The K-3 will be playing Orff instruments like xylophones and metallophones. They will layer different instrumental parts to play a song. They will also sing and play a game to the song that they learn.
Earlier this school year, we learned about musical elements such as rhythm, melody, and harmony. We incorporated instruments (drums, rhythm sticks, xylophones) into our lessons to learn these concepts.
French! We just finished with classroom commands/instructions in French, and are now going over greetings/conversational words. Students will role play short skits in French to practice these vocabulary words, as well as read several passages out loud as a group.
PE News! In Physical Education the students have been wrapping up their Presidential Fitness Testing with events such as the Pacer Test, Push ups, Sit Ups, Sit & Reach, Trunk Lift, and the 1 Mile Run. They did a superb job displaying their skills and abilities in each of these events.
Students are also moving on to cooperative games where they learn more about teamwork and working together as a group to accomplish a goal. These include a variety of different games and activities such as tagging games, relay races, and more.
Art News!
This year, we are focusing on the Elements of Art, which are color, form, line, shape, space texture and value. Each grade level has a specific state benchmark that relates to each of these elements. From the solid foundation established in kindergarten, each year's art concepts build upon what the students have learned the previous year. For students in 1st to 5th grades: I am incorporating key lesson segments of the Elements of Art that they may not know. For example, 3rd graders will receive fundamental art lessons from K to 2nd, and so on. This approach will get the children "caught up" and help them understand their grade level material.
Rest assured that in each of their lessons, we will end the class in their current grade level benchmark. You should see their happy faces when they know that they have arrived at their current benchmark level!

Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month!
Due to Hurricane Irma we are going to stretch it out a little further into the month of November. In class, students are learning about different Spanish speaking countries, their cultures and famous people they just might know about. We will also be teaching the whole school a word of the day, so ask your student if they know what today's word is!
All grade levels will be doing a project that will be displayed at our Annual Hispanic Heritage Night on November 8th. We are going to have lots of fun on this night making crafts, learning a few traditional dances and making some yummy snacks. Chorus will be performing that night so mark your calendars now!

Dual Language Community Update!
Kindergarten Kindergarten Dual Language Spanish classes are working on the reading standards: El tema principa y detalles de la historia(main topic and details). In science we started matter material and the states: solid liquid and gas (solido , liquid y gaseoso). We are also working on the sight words : yo, me, gusta, veo, el, la. Every day we review the letters and sounds, the calendar, days of the week, and the date. We sing every day to reinforce vocabulary.
A pair of kindergarten students proudly share their work!
1st Grade In Dual Language students are working on verbs "verbos" and adjectives "adjetivos." Spelling words start next week (palabras de deletreo). They are also working on the syllables in Spanish, "ca, co, cu."
2nd Grade In DLE, students are learning to describe themselves, places, people and things by using adjectives in conversations.
3rd Grade Dual Language students in grade 3 are finishing the Unit on Peru. They are doing an in class project to complete the unit. The next unit will focus on how we live (como vivimos). They will also be learning about Argentina.
4th Grade In 4th grade by the end of Unit 2, students will be able to name the rooms in a house and places in a neighborhood by describing the areas of an apartment and visiting a Paraguayan street. They will talk about clothing by identifying the different items, their colors, and the appropriateness of a type of clothing for a specific occasion. They will describe household chores by learning about typical Paraguayan practices. They will also talk about community workers and the places they work by learning about basic jobs in the community.
