"The Courage of These Times, Part II" - Rev. Barbara H. Gadon

Barbara explores more of the wisdom of Bryan Stevenson, an Alabama attorney for death row prisoners and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative: staying hopeful and doing uncomfortable things. Featured musicians: "No Strings Attached" Winds, Eliot Choir.

Sharing the Offering
October's offering will be shared with Immigrant & Refugee Women's Program. In October we will share our offering with Immigrant & Refugee Women's Program. Successful Social
Justice Assembly
On October 3, more than 40 Eliot people gathered in Adams Hall to hear Jeff Smith and his colleagues outline the work of Concordance Academy, which helps released prisoners who are returning to the St. Louis area after serving their sentences. Several of us signed up to learn more about serving on volunteer teams that support these men and women as they work to rebuild their lives. If you were unable to attend this event, but would like to know more about this volunteer opportunity, please contact Ann Ruger or email [email protected].

Volunteers Needed!

Ready For An Adventure?
Do you love history? How about Eliot history? Are you ready to journey into the past to discover treasures untold? We need a team of archival historians to sort, evaluate, and possibly digitize decades worth of accumulated Eliot Chapel artifacts. Contact [email protected]
if you're ready for the adventure!

Greeters Needed!
We're looking for additional volunteers to join our current pool
of greeters here at Eliot. These fine people pass out hymnals and orders of service each week and take up the offering during the service. The work is easy - your total commitment is only to arrive 15 minutes before a service you'd be attending. In addition to Sunday Services, greeters are also needed for Memorial Services. Interested? Please contact our coordinator Bob Coulter at [email protected].

Join us for
Vigil for Hope and Healing #154, Tuesday October 24 at 6:00 pm

RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW
Sanctuary seekers need YOUR help NOW. More than 25,000 undocumented immigrants live in St. Louis in constant fear. Several have chosen to seek sanctuary rather than allow ICE to tear their family apart.  Churches are in a unique position to help. The tradition of sacred sanctuary for those seeking justice dates back to the Middle Ages (or before). Federal regulations acknowledge this special status of churches and discourage immigration enforcement there. Even ICE pauses at the idea of invading a church.

Several area churches are working hard to retrofit and furnish living spaces for these brave individuals. They URGENTLY need the following resources and skills NOW:

Furnishings - bed(s), kitchen table, chairs, couch, linens
Appliances - stove, refrigerator, kitchen sink, bath fixtures, microwave, washer, dryer
Cabinets - vanity, bookshelves, etc.
Interpreter(s) - Spanish now, other languages in coming days
Volunteers skilled in cabinetry, dry wall, concrete, electrical work

We also seek these resources and skills in the coming two weeks:

Nurses
Lawyers licensed in Missouri, including ones with immigration expertise
Teachers for home schooling
Physicians
People willing to assist as needed with  shopping
People to take  laundry into their home
Phone (cell phone and service plan)
Books/magazines/newspapers - especially in Spanish, and in languages other than English
Psychological support - psychiatrist, counselor/social worker, etc.

Please contact  [email protected] with any assistance you can provide. If you are willing to help but not now, please respond with your skills/resources and when we could call on you for help. Many of these needs will be ongoing.  Whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, that you do unto Me.
Don't miss the beauty of October at Bergfried
Spend a day hiking or camp overnight. The cottage can be reserved for "comfort" camping year-round. Let us know anytime you are planning to visit the property by writing to  [email protected].

Plan to enjoy the best of autumn's colors at Bergfried on Saturday, October 28 during the hosted day trip! Meet at Eliot's parking lot at 9:00 am to caravan/carpool or come out on your own. A Bergfried team member will be there to show you the cottage, lead you on a hike or two, and provide a bit of Bergfried history. Bring sturdy shoes and provisions for the day. All are
welcome and those new to Bergfried are especially encouraged. RSVP at
[email protected] .

A Fillmore Park Hurrah
Come join us for the last hurrah of the season in our "adopted" Fillmore Park, 410 S. Fillmore, Kirkwood, a pocket park in a racially diverse neighborhood about half a mile south of Eliot. Eliot Chapel volunteers will weed, pick up any trash, and be on the lookout for fallen leaves. Bring a rake, a broom and a favorite weed digger on Saturday, October 28 at 9:00 a.m., after which our Fillmore Park season will close. To sign up or learn more, email Claire Robertson at [email protected]

Abilities Symposium
Eliot Chapel will host the Kirkwood Human Rights Commission on October 28 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. The symposium presents the findings of a survey conducted in 2015/2016 that aimed to determine the needs of Kirkwood citizens who are faced with physical and/or cognitive challenges. Organizations will also be present whose missions involve addressing those needs in order to help the public understand how individuals can help make Kirkwood more accessible. This event is free and open to the public. A continental breakfast and light lunch will be served.

Potluck Gathering to Feature
Fun Entertainment
Don't forget to sign up for the potluck gathering hosted by the Board on Saturday,  November 4 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Besides family, friends, food and good  conversation for all ages, great entertainment will be offered! Jan Chamberlin
and Leon Burke will provide a musical interlude and, as usual, the Madrigal
troupe will provide an exclusive preview. Sign up with a Board member in Adams Hall on Sunday or on the bulletin board between the Sanctuary and Adams Hall.

Sunday, October 29 - 9:30 and 11:00 am
"Courage and Death" - Rev. Barbara H. Gadon
Facing death, whether our own or that of someone we love, takes tremendous courage and support. We will observe our tradition of honoring our beloved dead, and All Saints Day. Please bring a photo or memento of a loved one to add to our shared altar.
Featured musicians: Jennifer Stewart, flute and Women's Chorale.
