Virginia is a wine destination unlike any other, with lavish scenery, breathtaking views and monumental historic sites . . . and, some 280 wineries producing world-class vintages!  October marks the 29th year of VIRGINIA WINE MONTH.  It's the prime time to sample the "local crush" at events and festivals across the commonwealth, many of which are listed in our Events section.

For updates on activities, you should also check out the website at https://www.virginiawine.org/october-wine-month, and be sure to use the hashtag #OctVAWineMonth on any posting associated with visiting wineries.

As you travel the state and visit wineries this month, keep in mind that it will soon be time to vote for your Favorite Virginia Winery Tasting Room.  Check your inbox in coming weeks for information about the 2017 VISITOR'S CHOICE AWARDS.

As always, cheers to Virginia Wine.....and to Virginia Wine Lovers!

AFTON MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS
Afton, VirginiaOctoberwineryofthemonth
A visit to Afton Mountain Vineyards is an absolute must this October to experience the panoramic mountain view amid the splendor of autumn's colors. Situated on the sunrise side of Afton Mountain, the property sits at 1000 feet elevation in a setting that explains the winery tagline, "Grapes don't grow in ugly places."

One of Virginia's first farm wineries, Afton's original vines were planted in the 1970's. Charlottesville natives, Elizabeth and Tony Smith, acquired the property in 2009 and have since purchased additional land, doubling the size of the vineyard. Currently the farm is 150 acres with 25 under vine planted with Albarino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Tannat, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and a bit of Muscat.
