JPMorgan Chase Partners with SPC to Develop Regional Tech Talent Pipeline

JPMorgan Chase has awarded a grant of $250,000 to develop a new program that will help local residents land jobs in Tampa Bay's growing technology industry, while meeting the industry's demand for skilled workers in this space.
In partnership with the Tampa Bay Technology Forum, SPC will provide classroom and online training for students looking for careers in technology, create a database of support tools and develop a website that links students and educators directly to local employers looking to fill open positions.
"This project is an example of how education, industry and workforce can come together to address the critical challenge most industries face - finding and retaining top talent," said SPC President Tonjua Williams. "We are grateful to JPMorgan Chase for their investment."

Women Shine at STEM Symposium

Hands popped up immediately, as excitement bubbled over to ask an astronaut, meteorologist or educator a question: "How do you sleep in space? Is it fun to be on TV? How do I get involved if I'm not an educator?"
For the dozens of budding scientists, mathematicians, engineers and teachers in the audience, the SPC Women2STEM Symposium gave attendees a chance to see their heroes up close. Guest speakers included former astronaut and artist Nicole Stott, television meteorologist Lindsay Milbourne and Pinellas County Schools K-12 STEM Specialist Laura Spence.
The symposium drew all ages to SPC's Clearwater Campus and showcased the accomplishments of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Each panelist said they were first inspired and encouraged by their parents, and later by those they looked up to.
"I wasn't sure I could do it, but my mentors encouraged me to apply to the astronaut program," said Stott, an SPC alum and veteran astronaut with two spaceflights and 104 days in space on both the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station (ISS). "They had the confidence in me when I didn't necessarily have it in myself."

During her 28-year career with NASA, Stott performed one spacewalk, was the first person to fly the robotic arm to capture the free flying HTV cargo vehicle and the first to paint and Tweet from space. Stott was the last crew member to fly to and from their ISS mission on a Space Shuttle, and was on the crew of the final flight of the Space Shuttle Discovery.
Stott emphasized the importance of programs like Women2STEM. "I'm really thankful to SPC for hosting this event, where we can thoughtfully share our stories and inspire others," Stott said. "Girls need to see women doing things - doing things they didn't think they could."

The Pass-A-Grille Woman's Club (PAGWC) recently voted unanimously to provide $2,500 to support the SPC Foundation's First Generation Scholarship Initiative. The gift was made in memory of past PAGWC President Laurie Vallett, in conjunction with Ms. Vallett's family.
Founded in 1922, PAGWC is one of the oldest social organizations in our area. Over the years, PAGWC has dedicated its time and resources to meeting the needs of the community by supporting a broad range of organizations. Members of the Club recently visited the St. Pete Gibbs campus where they presented a check to the Foundation.

SPC to Offer In-State Tuition to Hurricane Victims
|
With the recent devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, St. Petersburg College is offering in-state tuition rates to displaced students from Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Houston area. Additionally, the college's $40 application fee will be waived for these students.

St. Petersburg Collegiate High School named a National Blue Ribbon School
|
St. Petersburg Collegiate High School (SPCHS) at St. Petersburg College has been recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School National Blue Ribbon for 2017 by the U.S. Department of Education. The award recognizes SPCHS for being among the state's highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
"I am immensely proud of our students and grateful for the dedicated St. Petersburg Collegiate High School and St. Petersburg College faculty and staff who guide and inspire our students to become scholars and leaders who achieve their goals," said Starla Metz, Principal, SPCHS.
At SPCHS, a public charter school governed by the SPC's Board of Trustees, students are able to simultaneously earn a high school diploma and an Associate in Arts degree. |
