Emotions Are High

Emotions are high in the United States right now. However, we must make sure that we act in a rationale way and not in an emotional manner. Though I often do not agree with the President and much of his policy, I refuse to condemn him each time he does something I don't like. I will not ascribe to the President's daily attempts to provoke divisiveness amongst citizens. If you do not like the choice we made for President, then you should take as many people as you possibly can to the polls on November 3, 2020. Let your voice be heard for a presidential candidate that will speak for the majority of America.

In my opinion, an even more important date is November 5, 2019. That is the day we vote for new leadership in Mississippi. As my legislative colleague Representative Jay Hughes says, "All active and registered voters should take 19 people to vote." 19 in 19 is what he calls it. It was funny to me at first, but he makes a good point. Jay, I have my 19 people plus a few more.

In Mississippi, we need state wide leaders to set a progressive course of action that charts an intelligent and inclusive plan of action that benefits all of Mississippi; Particularly, my Mississippi Delta. If you are dissatisfied with state or national politics, do not forget how you feel RIGHT NOW. You and your community will have a chance to make it right. I encourage you to redirect your energy on a real, tangible outcome. Please take all the frustration you have built up while watching television, using social media, and talking to people and invest it into your community.

What can you, as an individual, do to make a difference? Participating in community clean up efforts, volunteering at an after school program, or donating to a worthy cause all constitute as being involved. It doesn't matter what you do, just make sure it is a contribution to your community. So often, I hear people harp on what's wrong with our communities instead of lending a hand to add to the solution.

Again, thanks for allowing me to be the Mississippi House Representative for District 29. Our best days are ahead, and I truly believe that "Together We Can" achieve our goal of improving Mississippi and my Mississippi Delta.

I enjoyed sharing my alma mater, The University of Southern Mississippi , with my family. My time there from 1994 to 1998 was memorable to say the least. We played Southern University and took home the first victory of the year. Also, it was Black Alumni weekend.

Twice this summer, I went to the Capitol to attend House Transportation Committee Hearings. Mississippi's roads and bridges must become a priority so that citizens can be safe, new business can be attracted, and tourist can visit. Click Here to see more photos.

This Saturday, these youth were a part of the 22 volunteers that went door to door in Shelby, Mound Bayou, and Winstonville. They were recruited by the Delta Fresh Foods Initiative to determine how many people in the area want access to healthy and fresh foods. Despite the fact the Mississippi Delta has an abundance of land that is used for agriculture, Delta Fresh Foods conducted research that shows 90% of the food eaten in the area is imported from somewhere else. Thanks to everyone that came out to the Bolivar County Child Care Matters Meeting that was held in House District 29 a few weeks ago. To say the least, I learned a lot about childcare listening to the dialogue amongst the Department of Human Services, local childcare providers, and two other state legislators. All groups were allowed to ask questions and make comments. I look forward to continuing to inform constituents about federal and states changes to child care funding.

I am thankful for the efforts these two ladies extend to the community of Mound Bayou, Mississippi. Sister Dequardo and Sister Furrer both work at St. Gabriel Mercy Center. It was great to see them at the annual Mound Bayou Homecoming. Please check out their website: www.saintgabrielmc.org.

Congratulations to the Cleveland Central Wolves for starting the year off winning its first 7 games. The fact that you have combined two schools, and had success is a testament to the community. Though the season isn't over, you have certainly given your fans something to look forward to every Friday night. Let's GO Wolfpack!!!

I have attended two games in West Bolivar this year. On this day, I got to stop by practice and listen to the Rosedale Eagles coaching staff give some final words on Thursday afternoon before a Friday game. I have three school districts in House District 29 and I support them ALL.

Recently, I got to meet civil rights icon Andrew Young in St. Louis, Missouri at the inaugural Mississippi River Legislative Caucus. He was a humble man who shared a valuable piece of advice with me. "Never be afraid to stand alone. In the end, if you are right, others will begin to stand with you." I will cherish his sage wisdom.
