Progressive Dinner

Making Meaning of Kashrut with Rav Rebecca
Mondays, beginning November 6, 7 p.m.
Classes will be held on: 11/6, 11/13, 11/27, 12/4, 12/11

Kashrut is more than not eating milk and meat together and avoiding forbidden foods. It too, is to help develop a deeper understanding of the ways in which we live in relationship to the world around us and care for our bodies.

Studying Kashrut in rabbinic literature is a perfect lens to view the complex, questioning world of our rabbis and to see the multiple perspectives that exist on any one topic. By looking at biblical and religious sources, this course will focus on how each one of us can find meaning in the teachings of kashrut regardless of whether we keep kosher.

Session One: Biblical Origins of Kashrut: More Than Just Do's and Don'ts
Sessions Two and Three: Rabbinic Tradition and Kashrut: One Law, One Hundred Interpretations
Session Four: Tzar Ba'alei Chayyiim: Ethical Treatment of Animals
Session Five: Shmirat HaGuf: Taking Care of Our Bodies Spiritually and Physically

Please R.S.V.P. to Karen at kedwards@shirtikva.org.
Brotherhood Brewing Event
Brotherhood Brewing at Hopsters
292 Centre Street, Newton
Sunday Nov 1, 1 p.m. (end time around 4)

Do you like beer?  Do you know how to make it or want to learn?

Join the Brotherhood at Hopsters on November 12 at 1 p.m. for a brew session.  Hopsters is a fantastic brewpub/brew-your-own facility in Newton Corner owned by TST members Lee and Karen Cooper.  They've graciously offered us an opportunity to host a session for a greatly reduced cost of only $36 per person!

When the beer has finished fermenting (a couple weeks), we will also schedule a bottling (cans anyone?) session.  Come join us for the first (hopefully annual) Brotherhood Brew!

Meditation of the Heart: Traditional Jewish Meditation to Cultivate Compassion and Mindfulness of God
Meditation of the Heart: Traditional Jewish Meditation to Cultivate Compassion and Mindfulness of God with Rabbi Dr. Meir Sendor

Compassion is a precious quality always, but especially in these times our suffering world needs compassionate action desperately. Our workshop presents a traditional Jewish meditation practice focusing on the divine Name in a way that helps us feel more connected to each other as well as to God. Described by the kabbalist Rabbi Isaac of Acco in the 13th century and recommended for beginners as well as advanced meditators, we will practice this meditation together with analysis of its source text.

This workshop is one of a series of offerings from Tal Orot, a society for the refinement of Jewish spiritual and ethical awareness. Our society seeks to promote wider familiarity with the full range of authentic Jewish contemplative practices, to help cultivate a mature approach to Jewish spiritual life. The program includes training in Jewish meditation and prayer techniques correlated with in-depth text study. Traditional Jewish meditation and contemplative prayer can have a transformative impact on personal and interpersonal sensitivity and effective action. The overall goal of our program is to foster expansive consciousness and awakened conscience.

We are structured as a non-hierarchical, non-denominational society, in which the insights and experiences of all members are welcomed, shared and respected. Tal Orot expresses our vision for a contemplative society open to all Jews that can contribute to the spiritual and ethical vitality of Jewish life in Israel, North America and around the world.
