ANNOUNCEMENTS
The 2017 Farwell Distinguished Lecture will be presented by James Fallows on Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. The award-winning journalist and author will give a talk titled It's Happening Here: American Renewal, Ingenuity, and Innovation, the result of a three-year, 54,000-mile journey across America and reports on how the country is putting itself back together in the wake of recession and division. Q & A and book signing will follow.  
 
The Phi Beta Kappa event, "Slavery, Paul, and Luther's Legacy for the Bible," presented by Katherine Shaner, '98 will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, October 7, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Using slavery and its historical and theological context within Pauline communities, Shaner will explore how conversations about slavery have shaped modern theology and how Luther's legacy and slavery evolved both in the church and public in the following decades.

Featuring the college's premiere touring ensembles, the Luther College Homecoming Concert is at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, October 8, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall .

Following the life of the "father of modern science" Galileo Galilei, the Visual and Performing Arts department presents "The Life of Galileo" October 5-7 in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday; 8:30 p.m. on Friday; and at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $10 or free with Luther ID. Click for more information & to buy tickets

After spending a year advising at the U.S. State Department, Todd Green, professor of religion, will discuss his experience at 7 p.m. Sunday, October 8, in Valders 206. Green, a nationally recognized expert on Islamophobia, was asked to work in the Office of Policy and Global Issues in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, focusing on Islamophobia's impact on freedom of religion, human rights and countering violent extremism initiatives.  
 
Wellness is sponsoring a Walktober challenge. If you want some healthy motivation to get moving more, relieve stress during midterms, and chances to win prizes check out this website for information on how to register and download the personal step tracking recording form to get started.
 
Fall Festival - Monday, October 9 3:45-5:30 p.m., front lawn of Koren. All students welcome regardless of major. Enjoy music, selfie booth, games, prizes and more. Snacks will be provided, courtesy of the Education Department. Rain or Shine!
 
A student-curated exhibit, "From Parlor to Countryside: Recent Fine Arts Collection Print Acquisitions," will open Thursday, October 5, in the Luther College Union Gallery. Hannah Bergstedt, Luther junior, curated the exhibit as part of her work study opportunity. The exhibit, featuring select prints donated to the Luther Fine Arts Collection during 2017 by John and Leone Suttie, and Emeriti Professor Wilfred Bunge and Ruth Bunge, will be on display through December 4.

Chances are someone you care about will be in an abusive relationship, you can help.  Join us for the Escalation Workshop on Thursday, October 5 , 7:00-8:30 p.m.   in Olin 102. The Workshop includes a film and discussion that will help you identify unhealthy relationships and give tools on how to help. Sponsored by Counseling Service, Wellness, NASA, Student Life, Active Minds and Helping Services for Children and Families.
 
Contemplating change as both a powerful tool of construction and a disruptive act, Susan Schmidt, Luther assistant professor of social work, will present the first lecture in the Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 3, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. Using dissertation research from interviewing unaccompanied migrant children, Schmidt will talk about what she found when analyzing interviews with Central American and Mexican children. Reception will follow.

Flu Prevention Event! The Norse Blue Flupalooza will be held on Wednesday, October 4 in the Dahl Centennial Union from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  Cookie and coffee coupons for the Norse who fight the flu! Help protect our Luther Community from the Flu!  #GETVACCINATED. Cost: staff and faculty $25 paid at time of service (cash or check only), students $25 (may charge student account).

Blessing of Animals on Feast Day of St. Francis -- Bring your pet for a brief blessing of the animals on Wednesday, October 4, 12:00 noon at Bentdahl Commons.  Join us in celebrating St. Francis' love for animals and all of creation. 
Wondering how to keep track of your sources, create a bibliography and footnotes? Zotero ( a free application) helps you collect, manage, and cite your sources with a click of a button. Bring your laptop to our workshop and learn how to download Zotero and set it up to manage your resources (available for PCs and MACs). Wednesday, October 4 in Hovde Room (Preus Library).
The Luther College political science department, Luther College social work program and the American Association of University Women is hosting a local political candidate forum from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, October 5, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206.

Decolonizing Lutheranism-Philadelphia November 2- 5. An application for students interested in attending the conference on forming churches as inclusive communities is at the College Ministries Facebook page. Applications will be accepted through Thursday, October 5 at 5:00 p.m.
