Welcome to Christ Lutheran e-news, a weekly electronic newsletter which highlights programs and activities of our congregation. Feel free to .

Heal the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you. ~ Luke 10:9

The Greek word for Savior is "soter," which can mean "save, rescue, deliver; keep safe, preserve; cure, make well"--all interrelated aspects of healing--salvation. Jesus made a further connection between healing and forgiveness. October 18 is the feast day for St. Luke, Physician and Evangelist. As we draw close to that date, we will this Sunday offer anointing and laying on of hands with prayers for healing at our morning worship for all who seek restoration of body, mid or spirit--for yourself, or someone you love. Several stations will be available to facilitate the flow.

An observation borrowed and adapted from Pr. Ross Goodman at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Arlington: CLC worshipers are encouraged to observe the "five-minute rule" each Sunday after worship: Resist your natural inclination to gravitate toward the folks you know well and with whom you are already friendly, and for the first five minutes after the postlude, make a point o greeting, welcoming, and getting to know folks who are new to CLC--or new to you!

Hello, Church! Those jazz guys were awesome! The jazz service was a hit! We have so many opportunities to hear great music at CLC!

After church on  October 15th the youth are washing cars in the parking lot. High school youth and their families are raising money to go to Houston next summer for the ELCA national youth gathering! The car wash is a free-will donation. You'll be able to eat off the hood when we're done. See you there!
Adult Formation
Adult Forum

At the Adult Forum we continue reading and discussing Declaration on the Way: Church, Ministry and Eucharist, a joint publication of the ELCA and United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, looking at areas of agreement between our church bodies, as well as those of remaining differences. Please  download a copy of the .pdf for your use.
CLC Book Group is reading James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time for Oct. 16.

The Interfaith Book Club of the Islamic Center of Boston, Wayland, is holding its second community meeting to continue our interfaith conversation about the issues that can divide or unite us. The book for the discussion is Getting to the Heart of Interfaith, by Pastor Don Mackenzie, Rabbi Ted Falcon and Imam Jamal Rahman. This book is 'a deeply personal journey to interfaith collaboration that offers hope for an inclusive and healing way of being together in the world.'

MARTIN LUTHER: THE IDEA THAT CHANGED THE WORLD
Sunday, October 15, 4 PM in the Memorial Room

Five hundred years ago this month Martin Luther nailed (or not?) his 95 Theses on the Castle church door in Wittenberg. To mark the occasion, Thrivent commissioned this film starring Padraic Delaney as Luther, and narrated by Hugh Bonneville (of Downton Abbey).  The film covers main historical events as well as Luther's family life, his personal struggles and his Biblical and theological insights.  Here is Luther warts and all, including his anti-Semitism and the ELCA's apology for it. Everything Luther says is a quote from his writings.  Come celebrate the 500 th and learn or review what it means to be "Lutheran."

2 hours.  Rated TV-PG

Call to Action
Looking for ways to respond to the devastation in Puerto Rice and elsewhere? In a disaster, "cash is king," so monetary donations through Lutheran Disaster Response are encouraged: http://www.elca.org/Our-Work/Relief-and-Development/Lutheran-Disaster-Response/  LDR is a faithful steward of your gifts, and works on the ground with local partners who stay long after the media have left--until the job is done.

If you prefer to give in a more tangible way, Santuario Luterano in Waltham, where our friend Padre Á ngel Marrero serves as pastor-developer, is receiving most--needed items until Friday only.  Requested donations: diapers, bottled water, blankets (but no clothes), first aid items, flashlights, batteries. Pastor Bourret will see that items brought to CLC by Thursday are delivered to Waltham.

CLC Cooks: In lieu of our regular coffee hour, we're planning a brunch following our celebratory worship with Alice Parker on October 2 2. Please sign up to prepare a breakfast casserole, fruit plate, or breakfast pastry to share. A sign-up sheet is available on the kiosk in the narthex.
Looking Ahead

In case you haven't heard (!), October 31, 2017 is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Here at CLC we'll mark the occasion with a festive worship service on Sunday, October 29--please wear RED, the color associated with the Holy Spirit's life--giving and renewing power-- and by dedicating a beech tree planted on our front lawn. Thanks to all who have made contributions to defray the costs. Donations are still being received.

Later, we'll join with friends from throughout our Metropolitan Boston Conference of the New England Synod, ELCA, for a service of Evening Prayer at St. John Lutheran Church, Sudbury, with The Rev. Dr. John Hoffmeyer preaching. Refreshments will follow. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime occasion!

READINGS FOR THIS WEEK
October 8, 2017, Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

One definition of a parable is "an earthly story with a heavenly meaning." The gospel for this coming Sunday is a parable about a vineyard, but we understand that the story is really about the call to accept and honor Christ as our master. Come on Sunday to worship Christ, the Son of God, the cornerstone who secures our lives.

First Reading      Psalm                 Second Reading       Gospel
Isaiah 5:1-7           Psalm 80:7-15       Philippians 3:4b-14       Matthew 21:33-46
Sing For Joy
Enhance your understanding of the weekly scripture readings by listening to Sing For Joy http://www.stolaf.edu/singforjoy/ from St. Olaf College.  The Sing For Joy radio program, produced by St. Olaf College , has a simple mission: to explore the weekly themes of Christian worship by providing the best in sacred choral music and thoughtful commentary. The musical performances eloquently "do the talking," while the concise remarks from host Pastor Bruce Benson illuminate the meaning of the texts.
