A Selection of our best titles for October 2017

Last month found us in Detroit's beautiful Belle Isle at the Detroit Boat Club where we were the Bookstore for the 21st annual meeting of the Preservation Trades Network. The Editor of Tradition Building Magazine asked me to write up the experience in a "Travelogue" which they published with 20 interesting photos of the trip:

This month, in addition to building trades, architectural, and related subjects, we are including a nice group of books about California, as well as books by Eric Sloane, the wonderful American author/illustrator. From his start as a sign painter, his subjects ranged from climate & weather, to travelogues, to New England culture to tool making.

Also we are offering a scarce and interesting book on scaffolding (Item No 28) which ties in to the New York AIA Center for Architecture's Exhibition on Scaffolding which runs from October 2 through January 18th.

Happy Browsing!

"One of America's favorite folk artists, Eric Sloane started out as an itinerant sign painter-a profession that took him from New England to New Mexico and many places in between. Along the way, he did ink-on-white-paper sketches of passing scenes and landscapes. Many of them appear in this delightful collection of drawings, along with the artist's nostalgic, autobiographical commentary on the roads traveled and the sights seen." Here are delightful impressions of streams winding through snow-covered landscapes; old stone barns and farmhouses, covered bridges, farming tools and implements, spring houses, and trees-from sturdy sycamores to graceful aspens. Today, the pastoral landscapes, rustic homes, and traditional arts he encountered in his travels live on in these bittersweet glimpses of American life from a bygone era.One of the more uncommon of Sloane titles.
