Insulin For Life USA Helps Hurricane T1Ds
The past couple of months have been fraught with natural disaster as Hurricanes
Harvey, Maria, and Irma touched down in Texas, Puerto Rico, and Florida, as well as the surrounding areas and islands. The results were devastating for many families and homes. Every day, the question arises: "How can we help?". The Chris Dudley Foundation touched base with non-profit organization Insulin For Life to hear about their efforts to support people with diabetes who have been affected by these tragic events.

"Insulin for Life USA is honored to be working in a coalition which includes: Insulin for Life USA, ADA, JDRF, AADE, ACE, Endocrine Society.", stated IFL executive director, Carol Atkinson. IFL is working with the coalition to respond to the increased need for insulin, blood glucose meter, and test strips, as well as other pertinent diabetes management supplies. Thankfully, IFL's office in Gainsville, FL was spared by Hurricane Irma and the organization is dedicated to providing the necessary supplies.

As of September 2, IFL had shipped 78 boxes to various sites around Texas, including  446,090 syringes, 213,600 pen needles... ( READ MORE )

Thank you to IFL Executive Director, Carol Atkinson for taking the time to provide Playing Thru with information about IFL efforts. Supporting information provided by the Insulin for Life website and Facebook page

She also plays basketball for her high school and participates in indoor soccer and unified soccer.  Ka'iulani first attended the Chris Dudley Basketball Camp 5 years ago.  She shared with us about her camp experience and what she has learned through her time at CDBC.
"The Chris Dudley Basketball Camp has changed my life.  For years, I had heard what an amazing camp it was but I was always too nervous to go.  Finally in 2012, I decided that it was time to go.  Camp is a place that I will always call home.  There's just something about the people and the place that makes it so special.  The minute you get out of your car... CLAIRE FIELDER
CDBC camper 6 years; Staff 2 years
What is your favorite camp memory?
It's very hard to pick a favorite camp memory as I have so many great memories associated with my years at camp! But I still remember returning to camp for my second year and how I was a little apprehensive that people wouldn't remember me and I wouldn't have as much fun as I did during the prior year. But as soon as my mom and I drove up to Vernonia and I spoke to just a handful of people, my fears vanished. People did remember me by name and I think I had even more fun than the prior year!!
Did you learn anything at camp to improve your diabetes care?
I learned so much from camp about how to better manage my diabetes! However, I think that one of the most important lessons I learned was more mental. That no matter what you want to accomplish in life, diabetes will not stop you from getting there. Although it is not always easy, it is entirely possible!
Do you stay in contact with anyone you met while attending camp?
Unfortunately I have not stayed in direct contact with anyone from camp, but I love following people from camp on social media and seeing the amazing things that people are doing with their lives! Also, I know that if I were ever in need of someone to talk to, my friends from camp would be there for me 110%!
Tell us about yourself since your camper days!
I just graduated from Miami University this past May with a degree in Accounting. Following, I moved out to Chicago in July and started my first "real" job working in Risk Advisory for Ernst and Young.
Do you have any advice for present or future campers?
My advice to any campers is to remember that camp extends well beyond the week spent in Vernonia. Your fellow campers and staff are always available and curious about what you are up to in life and want to be there for you if you are going through a hard time, whether diabetes related or not. I would recommend staying in communication with your friends from camp because its great to have friends who understand what you are going through!
