Testimonial
"Professional. Intelligent. Knowledgeable. Trustworthy. These are the words I would use to describe Denise Lang. Our buying experience with Denise was exemplary. As out of town buyers, we relied heavily on Denise to find, screen and share potential properties with us. She listened to us - asked what we were looking for and dreaming of. It was clear to us that it was important for her to know who we were as people and as a family - and, importantly, what we were looking for in a home. Based on this knowledge, she provided us with multiple options throughout the Flathead Valley. Additionally, when we would find properties and asked her about them she was immediately able to tell us about the location, the neighborhood, and often the history of that specific property. Amazingly, she did this all without the help of a computer! She has an incredible and unique handle on the real estate market in the Flathead Valley. She guided us through this process, and we found the home of our dreams. I cannot imagine having done this without Denise. We were lucky to have her on our team, and now we are happy to call her our friend!"

Greetings good friends and clients and Happy Thanksgiving!

What a festive time of year! Bigfork is abuzz with activity! The elves have done their magic and we are all set for the holidays! Remember to shop Small Business Saturday on November 25th. There are wonderful shops in the Village. Take a break from shopping and stop in to the office!

I love this time of year because it reminds me (and maybe you, too) of growing up in the 50s and 60s when food looked a lot different than it does now! I was thinking of Thanksgivings past with yams and marshmallows, jello salads and that ever-present green been casserole! I found some of those old recipes and thought I would share. Click on the photo and trip down memory lane.

Now for some real estate news from Kelley's Market Trends...Two important points come to us this November. One is that foreclosures in the Flathead Valley are down to 1.8%, an 8 year low. Read article here. The other article shows the distribution of current listings and 12 months of sales by price range. See here. The market is smart and pricing is key to getting your home sold.

No Heat?

Home appliances can give out at the most inconvenient times, such as when you have guests or in the middle of the night.
Aire Serv Heating & Air Conditioning have put these helpful tips together to try and get the system back up and running when a furnace stops working.
  • Check the power. Reset the furnace breaker on your home's main electrical panel, as well as any power switches located near the furnace.
  • Inspect the furnace air filters. If they are dirty, change them. Dirty filters can restrict the air flow to the system causing it to shut off.
  • Check the thermostat batteries, and make sure it is turned on to "heat". Increase the temperature setting to 5 degrees above room temperature.
  • Is the door on the furnace properly sealed? Many systems have a safety switch that stops them from operating if the door is not completely shut.
  • Verify whether other gas appliances in the house are working. Check that the furnace pilot is lit. NorthWestern Energy customers can request a pilot re-light for gas or propane systems at no cost. (This does not apply for electric furnaces.)

Denise's Book Corner....

Inspired by my trip last summer to Williamsburg and Jamestown, I read this book quickly. Each chapter is short, but there is a great deal of depth and history to it.

It's  based on the lives of Connie Lapallo's (the author's) ancestors. It is the life story of Joan Phippen Peirce spanning from her teen years growing up in England to her journey to Jamestown.

She was orphaned young and apparently that fueled her sense of adventure. She set off with her husband and daughter in a flotilla of seven ships to the new world--America. After a hurricane, only six ships arrived in Jamestown. Joan's husband and most of the supplies were on the seventh ship.

She lived through the 1609-1610 "Starving Time" when only 60 out of nearly 500 Jamestown settlers survived the winter.  The amount of courage it would take to leave a native country to a completely unknown land is fascinating to me.

Another aspect of the book that I loved was the historical record of the foods they ate, like acorns. The author suggests that a Jamestown citizen, with a knowledge of plants, may have spent the months leading up to the winter collecting and preparing acorns to make acorn flour. I would have definitely been one of those innovative colonists!

Something I didn't know about this group of settlers. They were named the Virginia Company, after Queen Elizabeth I, the Virgin  Queen!
