PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT MORATORIUM FOR EBR

IMMEDIATE ACTION IS REQUIRED

   

Councilman Buddy Amoroso has introduced a proposed ordinance for a six (6) month moratorium that would bring development in East Baton Rouge Parish to a halt.

 

A public hearing is set for October 11, 2017 at the Metropolitan Council.

 

Your Immediate action is required.  Please contact the members of the Metro Council to express your opposition and concerns. The Baton Rouge Growth Coalition, Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce, Associated General Contracts (AGC), Baton Rouge Realtors, and Capital Region Builders Association (CRBA) all oppose this moratorium.

 

The proposed moratorium's stated purpose is to stop development to study what changes could be made to the United Development Code ("UDC") concerning drainage.  It is entirely unfair to declare a moratorium on existing rules formulated by the City/Parish when no determination has been made as to whether the existing standards need revision.

 

A comprehensive study is underway by HNTB Engineering firm and we need to let the science guide us instead of proceeding with a knee jerk response.  It will take a coordinated effort of East Baton Rouge, Ascension, Livingston and Iberville parishes to properly address flooding.  None of this will occur in six months.

 

There is always room for improvement, but the mere discussion of a moratorium places a chilling effect on business expansion and consideration of coming to Baton Rouge.  It sends a clear message that we are "not open for business."
