Deer Creek embraces green initiatives
Deer Creek Golf & Banquet Facility is featured in the October
Durham Sustain Ability newsletter
for a number of green initiatives that the organization has recently introduced. Beginning in October, the facility no longer purchases plastic straws, opting instead to serve their drinks straw-less. Biodegradable straws will be available for those guests who request straws. This move is part of the #StrawsSuck campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the high volume of plastic waste ending up in our oceans.
Staff at Deer Creek already participate in a number of green initiatives, including pollinator friendly spaces throughout their property, roadside cleanup of a portion of Taunton Road several times a year, and participation in shoreline clean ups with other Durham Partners in Project Green (DPPG) members. Congratulations on helping reduce the environmental impact of business!

Durham Tourism and Invest Durham websites to merge with the new durham.ca
As of mid-December, DurhamTourism.ca and InvestDurham.ca will be part of the new durham.ca website in an effort to streamline how we deliver information to the public. The merger is a result of months of consultation and development.
Both DurhamTourism.ca and InvestDurham.ca will automatically be redirected to their respective new sections on the new Regional website ----we encourage you to check it out when we celebrate our official launch on December 13! The current URLs will bring you to the new website, which we continue to build with the latest information, news and events. Share your feedback with us by emailing [email protected].

Now open: The Little Beasts Brewing Company
The Little Beasts Brewing Company recently opened its doors on October 20. Founders Erin Broadfoot (formerly of 5 Paddles Brewing) and John Henley opened the 10-hectolitre brewery, complete with a small taproom and bottle shop. Located at 2075 Forbes Street in Whitby, the brewery currently offers five beers for purchase (in bottle) and on tap! Little Beasts produces a selection of craft beers, including Pale Ales, IPAs, Stouts and a seasonally themed line of Saisons. The brewery is also planning a barrel program in the near future. Keep these upcoming sport events on your radar!
Take advantage of Sport Durham's monthly sport events radar to ensure that your business is prepared to welcome incoming athletes and visitors to Durham Region during key sport events!
Keep the following events on your radar for this month:
- Great Ontario Bonspiel, Annandale Curling Club, Ajax; November 18. In celebration of Canada 150, check out the 20 curling clubs throughout Ontario that will be participating in this bonspiel.
- Gloria Rints International Silver Stick Tournament, Whitby, November 23 to 26. Approximately 120 teams participating.
- Whitby Girls Hockey Association Tournament of Heroes, this year's tournament celebrates the 20th anniversary of the tournament, December 1 to 3, various rinks in Whitby and Oshawa. A portion of tournament proceeds is donated to Wounded Warriors Canada.

Sport Durham is pleased to invite stakeholders to join us at the 2017 Sport Durham Convergence on
December 7 at the
Civic Recreation Complex Fieldhouse, 99 Thornton Road South, Oshawa, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
With 2019 Ontario Parasport Games planning underway, we look forward to learning more about parasport and how we can provide para-athletes with the best possible experience while competing #InTheDR. We will also hear about the inspiring legacy of the Toronto 2017 North American Indigenous Games and how to incorporate meaningful legacy plans into our events.
This year, we invite you to dress for comfort and activity. Yes, that means athletic wear is encouraged! You'll have the opportunity to get out on the field and try blind soccer. Since the event will be in the temperature controlled
indoor fieldhouse at the
Civic Recreation Complex, we suggest dressing in layers.

- The Para-athlete Experience, an interactive panel discussion featuring para-athletes including:

- Mike Frogley, Director and Head Coach, Wheelchair Basketball Canada Academy
- Rick Watters, para-sailor and boccia player
- Sport Event Legacy Planning session presented by Cheryl Finn, Director of Sport Tourism for Tourism London and Chair of the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) on behalf of the CSTA
- (Tentative) Sport Trends in Durham student presentations with Ian Ellis, Professor, Durham College Sport Management and Durham College Business of Sport students
