Bringing the love of Christ to the DeLand community!

Reverend Dale Golden, Senior Pastor

Greetings!
“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out. But I, God, search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human. I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be.” (Jeremiah 17:9-10, The Message Bible)
HIDDEN TREASURES
Several years ago, I found myself on a long country road enjoying a beautiful sunny day, speeding along without a care in the world. A state trooper pulled me over and asked if I knew why he pulled me over? “Yes, I was driving too fast, I’m sorry (70 in a 55).” He gave me a warning. He was too kind.
Two months later, I found myself tired after a long church meeting and the hour far exceeded 10:00pm. I just wanted to be home. A sheriff’s deputy pulled me over and asked if I knew why he pulled me over? “Yes, I was tired and driving too fast, I’m sorry (again, 70 in a 55).” He gave me a warning. He was too kind.
Three months passed and I just left the district office at 12:00 noon and the signal light turned to amber, then red three times. I was determined not to wait for a fourth light, so I proceeded on an amber light that had hints of red. A city police officer pulled me over and asked if I knew why he pulled me over? “Yes, I was in too much of a hurry, I’m sorry.” He gave me a warning. He was too kind.
Moral of the story might be to slow down and obey the posted laws of the land and of course you would be right, but there is another moral. Each officer of the law gave me an opportunity to tell the truth. Though I broke the law three times in just a few months, I was given an opportunity to share the contents of my heart. Of course, the truth was already known; it was up to me to accept it and admit my fault.
Jeremiah was ministering to a nation in exile. He was speaking heart language to folks that had sinned. They had broken so many holy laws that they found themselves in exile, thrown out of their own country. The people were living in their brokenness. Jeremiah consoled them with an understanding of their twisted and broken heart.
Are there times in our own lives that we cry out to the Lord because of our situation? How many of those same situations did we put ourselves in? Do we need God to rescue us from us? Just a few verses later, Jeremiah shares this message: “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for you are my praise.” (17:14, NRSV)
The opening of the next chapter (18) Jeremiah is reminded that God is the potter and we are blobs of clay to be molded by the Master’s hand on the spinning wheel. God has a way of remolding us into priceless treasures, but because God also gave us free will, we must be open to the master Potter.
Is there something in our lives that we need to bring to bring to the Master for retooling? Lord, help us to open our minds and souls to your touch and refrain from blocking Your blessings. Lord, forgive us for our sinful and selfish nature. Creative God, we accept your healing hand. Amen
“I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High!” (Psalm 9:1-2)

SERMON SERIES FOR THE MONTH

October 8 - Psalm 19 "What is Acceptable?"
October 15 - Psalm 23 "Ministry Fair: Celebrating our Laity in Service"
Laity Sunday is October 15 and we will be hosting a
Ministry Fair
during and between worship services that day. A ministry fair allows the church to highlight the various ministries that we are involved in, such as mission, outreach, evangelism, finance, trustees, children and youth, just to mention a few. We will be using visuals, as well as showcasing our church leadership. This is an opportunity for us to ask questions such as, “Who is in charge of…or how can I get involved... or where do I sign up for…?” Another good question might be, what is required of me?
Both worship services will be held
at their regularly scheduled times
in the Fellowship Hall and the Ministry Fair will be between services.
October 22 - 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 "How Many Likes Can I Get?"
October 29 - Revelation 7:9-17 "Reformation and All Saints Sunday"
NOTE: SINCE MOST WORSHIP SERVICES ARE NOW BEING RECORDED, PLEASE VISIT AND SUBSCRIBE TO OUR
YOU TUBE CHANNEL TO CATCH-UP ON THOSE SERVICES YOU MAY HAVE MISSED. TO LEARN MORE, CONTACT THE CHURCH OFFICE AT (386) 734-4425.

A REPORT ON THE BISHOP'S GATHERING
|
Ten members of Trinity's Administrative Council traveled to Jacksonville last Monday afternoon to attend the second of three regional meetings that
Bishop Ken Carter is holding around the conference.
Held at
Mandarin United Methodist, Bishop Ken Carter addressed the large group, answering questions - many on a topic that weighs heavily on the minds of many in the Florida Conference: the LGBTQ community and how it fits in The United Methodist Church.
"During the 2016 General Conference, there was a stalemate on the subject, a stuckness, if you will," he told those gathered.
"The general conference approved, barely," he said,
"the formation of a task group called
The Commission on a Way Forward
. It is a select group of 32 pastors, lay members and bishops who will address the issue and present a report to the Council of Bishops in 2019 with recommendations on how the Church can recognize the different theological understandings and expressions on human sexuality."
Carter also spoke about the need to incorporate various cultures within the churches, reflecting the communities that surround them. And he talked about the need to reach out to the community in times of chaos, like the recent weeks following Hurricane Irma.
|
The Commission on a Way Forward has issued a new status report. The Florida Conference Bishop, Kenneth Carter, is one of the three bishops chosen to serve as moderators for the commission. Carter has written a forward to the status report which can be found by clicking on this link:

TRINITY'S RESPONSE TO HURRICANES HARVEY, IRMA AND MARIA HAS BEEN INSPIRATIONAL!
|
|
Thank you so very, very much for your quick and generous response to our plea to fill flood buckets. Joleen and I took the 50 buckets that YOU filled to First United Methodist of Lakeland where they were put to immediate use!
Our church was also quick to respond after Hurricane Irma passed through. After making sure their own homes and families were safe, members of the Trustees and staff hurried down to check everything out at the church. When the power came on, we immediately turned down the air conditioning, fired up the stove and began cooking hot dogs. Word was sent out that
we were open, the air was cool and folks could come in for food, fellowship and electricity to charge their phones!
Members and folks from around the community got the message and came in for refreshment of mind and body. What a blessing it was to serve all of God's people!
Please continue to pray for those still affected. So many in the Keys, Caribbean and especially Puerto Rico are still without food, water and power. Pray also for
UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), the United Methodist churches in South Florida who were impacted by Irma, and all of the agencies and partners responding to those in need.
Continue to give generously to UMCOR. Remember, one hundred percent of your donation will go to help those affected by this year's hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters. Thank you in advance for your quick actions and response. We are called to action by our Lord to reach out to all who are in need. Bless you for having such caring hearts!

The Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference (SEJ) Commission on Archives and History will hold a
Heritage Preservation Workshop on November 17-18 at Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center in beautiful (and cool!) Lake Junaluska, North Carolina.
The theme of the workshop is
“Bringing Life to History” and the organizers will bring together some of the region’s most noted historians and archivists to instruct local church historians on
"how to tell our church stories"
by collecting oral, audio and video histories from members of our congregations.
The future of our United Methodist Church is going to depend on relaying
stories about its people – not just about events or buildings. If you would like more information, please email me at

COME TO THE FAIR ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15TH!
|
YES!
We are having a
Ministry Fair!
You might be asking, “What is a ministry fair?” Thank you for asking; that’s a very good question. A ministry fair allows the church to highlight the various ministries that we are involved in, such as mission outreach, evangelism, finance, trustees, children and youth, just to mention a few.
We will be using visuals, as well as showcasing our church leadership. This is an opportunity for us to ask questions such as, “Who is in charge of…or how can I get involved or sign up for…?” Another good question might be, what is required of me?
Laity Sunday is October 15
and the
Ministry Fair
will give us the ability to highlight the ministry of lay persons. Both worship and the ministry fair will be in the Fellowship Hall. Both of our worship services will be at their regular scheduled times.
The fair will be an exciting way of connecting folks in servant ministry for the Lord with the gifts we have been blessed with. Have you ever wanted to get “plugged in” but weren't sure how? October 15
th
is a day set aside especially for you. Make plans to join us and learn how!

NIGHT FOR FREEDOM BANQUET
In light of all the physical and emotional trauma, unexpected expenses and losses in so many families due to Irma, Maria, and the tragedy in Mexico, our church congregations are rightfully focused on hurricane disaster rescue, relief and recovery for countless hurting people, families and communities. Thus, the
Night for Freedom Banquet originally scheduled for Saturday, October 7 has been
postponed to Saturday, April 14, 2018.
We appreciate your support now and in past years, and look forward to partnering with you in April to raise funds to assist in the restoration of those who have survived the nightmare of human trafficking.
Sincerely,
The HOPE Team,
West Volusia Churches United

I know that all of you were saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our church's most valuable members --
Someone Else.
Someone's passing created a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else had been with us for many years, and for every one of those years, someone did far more than the normal person's share of the work. Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results. “Someone Else can work with that group,” was always heard. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, Someone’s name was on everyone's lips, "Let Someone Else do it."
It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the largest givers in the church. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed that Someone Else would make up the difference, Someone Else was a wonderful person, sometimes appearing super-human, but a person can only do so much.
Were the truth known, everyone expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone. We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did? Remember, we can't depend on Someone Else anymore.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT IN DELAND
|
|
On Tuesday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m., the DeLand Police Department will host an observance of
National Night Out at the DeLand Police Department. The department has sasked the faith community to gather in front of the department, located at 219 West Howry Avenue, to lift up prayers for peace and unity within our city. A similar event was held last year and organizers are expecting an even larger gathering because of recent events of civil unrest across the country.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August (Florida celebrates on the first Tuesday in October because of the heat.) Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more.
Church groups are encouraged to participate.
Tanna Gartside, at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, is the DeLand event coordinator. For more info, contact her by email at
[email protected]
or by calling her at (386) 734-6078 to let her know of your interest in participating.
