September Students of the Month
Sarah Khan
Class of 2017

Sarah Khan has had four impressive years at North. She is a member of National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, English Honor Society, and Latin Honor Society. Sarah is also part of the NHHS varsity volleyball team. She has been playing for the program for four years and was awarded second team all-conference for two seasons. Sarah is honored to be chosen alongside Erik Dehkes to represent our school in applying for the Wendy’s Heisman student athlete national award and scholarship. This season, she is humbled to be a team captain where she can lead and grow with such a fantastic group of humans. Sarah anticipates endless fun and winning big. AP Language and Composition with Ms. Carr was her favorite class of all time. The class was challenging, engaging, captivating, and changed her view on the value of education and the endless opportunities it grants us to discover passion in the places we least expect it. Sarah plays club volleyball for CJVA where last year, her team finished first in our region. She is a coach in the CJVA youth development program and tutors her peers in SAT prep. Sarah refuses to take any payment for teaching or coaching because of how rewarding the experience is for her. For an actual paycheck, she works at Clinton Station Diner. Her favorite, stress-relieving activities are kickboxing and making a bunch of fancy cakes. Sarah’s favorite memories from North are getting an A in AP Physics B freshman year. The class was a struggle to get through the content but she is happy she made it through. She also enjoyed spending time with her volleyball teammates on and off the court. Next year Sarah plans to focus on a pre-med track with a biomedical engineer major and a minor in English. She is applying at Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, and MIT.
Ryan Ruscansky
Class of 2017

Senior, Ryan Ruscansky plans to major in a degree with engineering. He is undecided with what he wants to pursue, but is leaning towards Aerospace Engineering or Applied Physics. Ryan has applied to many schools including Princeton, Harvard, Stevens, and Caltech. His favorite class at North was Mr. Sorg’s BC Calculus class. Ryan thought the class was very challenging but rewarding at the same time because he worked hard and earned good grades. He was at the top of his class and since the class is one of the hardest North offers, he was very proud of his performance. Ryan is a member of the North varsity baseball team, National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and Science Honor Society. He helped found a youth baseball clinic for North’s local little league and served as program director. The program was designed to help youth athletes transition from a little league field to a 50/70 field. Ryan also has a part-time job at Dynamic Engineering where he is a geotechnical engineer intern. He works with the Earth division where he collects soil samples to measure the soil density, determine the composition of the soil, and whether the soil could be used for sewage. Some of his favorite memories at North happened during the team’s baseball playoff run his sophomore year. They team wound up winning the county championship for back-to-back years and won the sectional championship. Ryan also enjoyed all the football games he attended over the years, especially the milk can games.
September Athletes of the Month
Kiera Horun
Class of 2017

Kiera Horun has played on the Varsity tennis team at a Singles position since freshman year. Kiera feels she has matured mentally and gained more confidence since her freshman year. She always tries to be a role model for the team by promoting a positive attitude and encouraging team spirit at all their matches. In 2016, the team won the conference title. Kiera has played tennis since 2007 and started competing in tournaments in 2011. She has been a member of the United States Tennis Association since 2012 and has participated in numerous singles and doubles tournaments across NJ. Kiera also competed as a member of The Courtside Tennis Club Girls League. She is currently being recruited to play tennis at a Collegiate Level at a number of Division III colleges. Depending on where she chooses to attend, she will play either at the varsity level or for a club team. Kiera will be applying to Notre Dame, Villanova, Lehigh, Purdue, Miami, Muhlenberg, and Penn State. She plans to major in either Medicine or Biology. When Kiera is not playing tennis, you can find her participating in many other clubs. She is currently a member of National Honor Society, French Club, Girl Up Club, Student Council, Student Ambassadors, Key Club, and Interact. Kiera has volunteered in the Special Olympics and Relay for Life since 2014, as well as Spike for the Cure. She competed on the Track Team freshman year and played violin as a freshman and sophomore for the North Orchestra Ensemble. Kiera has volunteered as a tennis teacher since 2013 for the Union Township Recreation Youth Tennis Program. She received her Girl Scout Silver Award in 2014 and volunteered the last three years as a Youth Religious Teacher at her church. In the past four years, Kiera volunteered for Feed the Need, Grow a Row, and Farming for the Hungry. She has volunteered at the Raritan Headwaters Spring Clean Up since 2012, and has been playing piano since 2012. She currently works at The Pittstown Grill and Frank’s Pizza.
Erik Dehkes
Class of 2017

Senior, Erik Dehkes has been playing football competitively since the fifth grade. Erik primarily plays middle linebacker, but also plays tight end. His strongest skill as a linebacker is anticipating what the offense will do and being able to align the defense in front of him to put the team in the best position. Erik had 14 tackles on defense in his first game of the season. He is excited to have the team compete at home in front of the fans and is proud of the win at Summit, which put the team in a great position in rankings in the division. Erik participates in winter Weight Room and Baseball in the spring. He is heavily involved in the Relay for Life Executive Committee and takes part in Special Olympics. Erik is a member of Interact, National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and is treasurer of Spanish Honor Society. He plans to continue to play football in college on the varsity level. Erik’s first choice for school next year is the University of Chicago. He is undecided on major, but plans on doing pre-med through college to prepare for medical school.

German Club
On Saturday, September 17, 2017, 23 members of the NHHS German Club marched in the 60th Von Steuben Parade in New York City. Chaperones included Mr. Mark Kotulich, Mr. Adam Shepherd, and Mrs. Kristal Waldron. Mrs. Jennifer Molzen and Mrs. Ann Meisenbacher also attended as parent chaperones. This was the third year that the German Club participated in the parade and the first time Hunterdon Central German Club students joined together with North.

The parade is held each year on the third Saturday of September, which coincides with the official start of the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. After the parade, students ate an Oktoberfest-style lunch and sang German songs at an authentic German Restaurant in New York City, organized by Mrs. Joy LaBelle. A great time was had by all.

The Von Steuben parade honors the German-American General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben (1730-1794), originally from Magdeburg, in Prussia (now Germany). Von Steuben fought with distinction in the Seven Years' War (1756-63) and offered his services to General George Washington and the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Von Steuben was appointed Inspector General of the Army, prepared a manual of military tactics, and reorganized and improved the Continental Army. He served as General Washington's Chief of Staff in the final years of the war, and became an American citizen in 1783.

Come join the German Club and celebrate our annual "Oktoberfest" on Monday, October 16th, from 2:30-4 PM in the Cafe B Annex. Consume authentic German delicacies lovingly homemade by North Moms & Dads - wurst, krauts, salads, and desserts for only $5 per person (only $3 for German Club members). Bring a friend and party like a Bavarian!

Performance dates: Thursday, October 19 @ 7:00pm, Saturday, October 21 @ 3:00 pm (matinee), and Saturday October 21 @ 7:00 pm, in the NHHS Theater. Tickets are $8.00 for students and senior citizens, $10.00 general admission. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

The Tempest is a Shakespearean comedy set on a deserted island in the Mediterranean. Prospero, Duke of Milan, was exiled by his power-hungry brother, Antonio, and has lived on the island with his young daughter, Miranda, for 12 years. Prospero uses his knowledge of magic to cause his brother and other political enemies to shipwreck close to his island, and thus to bring justice and a return to his dukedom. In the process, he arranges for the marriage of Miranda to the Prince of Naples, and decides that, once his dukedom is restored, forgiveness is more to be prized than vengeance. Characters in the play include Prospero, Miranda, several royals, spirits, mariners, and a villainous monster.
