CLASS and the
History Department hosted a successful
History Alumni Career Panel on Tuesday, featuring a panel of seven outstanding alumni who shared career-related insights with history faculty plus students from all class years including graduate students. The panelists represented a wide range of organizations including the Dayton Metro Library, Clark County Historical Society, the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, and our very own Wright State Special Collections and Archives. The alumni shared the joys and challenges of their jobs and spoke about how their liberal arts background and history degree have contributed to their success. Students then had an opportunity to ask questions and network with the panelists. It is great to see alumni taking an active interest in helping our students grow and develop.
As departments are beginning work on drafts of the F18 schedule, please consider whether you would be interested in teaching a section of LA1010. This is a one credit course for freshmen to introduce them to college life and to CoLA. The course is taught for 2 hours per week for the first 7 weeks of the semester, and is paid as an overload. Topics are up to faculty members. If you are interested or would like more information, please let me know.
It's wonderful to see our students out in the community representing Wright State in so many ways.
Music students Stephen Monath and Jackson Riffle recently entertained a sold out crowd for National Philanthropy Day at Sinclair. Their marimba music carried beautifully throughout the hall and set a great tone for the day's program. Thanks to Stephen and Jackson for sharing their talents and to Jerry Noble who coordinated this opportunity to introduce the community to our great music students.
International students in the LEAP Intensive English program took a recent field trip to downtown Dayton so that students could first learn how to use the local RTA bus system. The group enjoyed sightseeing around town, including a stop at the "Dayton Inspires" wall in the Oregon Historic District.
Please encourage your students to apply for scholarships for the 2018-19 academic year. The online scholarship application is open and students can apply for multiple scholarships with just
one application
. The deadline for all students is Monday, January 8, 2018. There are two additional scholarships open only to CoLA students: the
Leadership Scholarship
and the
Study Abroad Scholarship
. Applications are due to the CoLA Dean's office (163 Millett Hall) by Friday, January 26, 2018.
And remember, if you hear of students with an emergency that threatens their ability to complete the semester, please direct them to the Liberal Arts Emergency Fund application found here.
On Thursday, November 23, 12:00 - 2:00 p.m., Wright State will host the 6th Annual Raidersgiving which provides a meal to those who cannot go home for the holiday. The event takes place in the Nutter Center McLin Gym and there will be a shuttle running from the Student Union to McLin Gym from 11:45 - 2:00. More than 300 attendees are expected to participate this year. Please let your students who are staying on or close to campus next week know about this wonderful opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving. If you would like to donate funds to help supply food for Raidersgiving, you can give here.
