'Peter and the Starcatcher' to Open Oct. 6

The Southwestern College theatre department will present their family-friendly fall production, "Peter and the Starcatcher," on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6 and 7, at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m., in the Richardson Performing Arts Center.

"Even though the 'Peter Pan' characters are still evolving during 'Peter and the Starcatcher' you can tell who they are going to become," says director of theatre Allyson Moon.  "The show is written in a way that is highly entertaining and is absolutely for the entire family.  We even learn about the secrets of the magic fairy dust."

Peter Pan, his fellow characters, and the setting of Neverland have appeared in many works since the original books and play by J.M. Barrie. The earliest were the stage productions of the play and an adaptation to silent film, done with Barrie's involvement and personal approval.  Later works included adaptations of the main story in both animated and live-action films, musical stage productions, and a sequel novel.  In addition, there have been numerous uses of Barrie's characters, settings, and storylines  including reinterpretations, sequels, prequels, and spin-offs in a variety of media, including film, television series, video games, and books.

Moon explains why she thinks Barrie's work has been so popular through the years.
"I think it is because the Lost Boys get to live lives that all of us have dreamed of," Moon says,  "imagining we won't grow up, being able to fly, being able to have things the way we want them and not how the grown-ups want them to be.  With regards to Hook, the thing that continues to make him endearing is that he doesn't seem to be entirely bad.  He wants to be the ultimate villain but he has just enough flaws in his makeup that make him funny.  So even though he does some really villainous things, one can still have compassion for him.  And Tinkerbell-to have a guardian angel, someone who is always looking out for Peter Pan, I think that is something that we imagine about angels or fairies or sprites. Tinkerbell encompasses so many good and helpful parts of those spirits."

Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $6 for students.  For more information or tickets, call (620) 221-7720 or email   boxoffice@sckans.edu

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cowley County Seeking Donations

We just got great news that KSBBBS had $35,000 in matching funds available for donations of $500 or more that are not related to sponsorships from Bowl for Kids Sake.  They must be deposited by October 4th.

Thanks for helping us serve more youth in our community!

~~~~~~
Besides asking for your blessings and prayers, as usual we are needing help with traffic control, donations of foods for lunch and help with getting the message out that our county's needs are even greater this year.
The Angels in the Attic will be distributing the toys as needed around Cowley County.  Remember all gifts collected in Cowley stay in Cowley.  The surrounding counties have their own events which helps folks from those counties.
The event buttons will be arriving in a few days and will be a $2 donation.  We will be giving away two grand prizes this year.  To win one needs to get a $5 lunch arm band, enjoy a full meal lunch and keep the arm band on until the numbers are called.  Lunch will include home made Sloppy Joes, chips, veggie snacks and pie or cake, all to be washed down by iced tea or coffee.  Our prizes are first winner choice of a wooden rocking motorcycle or a heavy duty motorcycle lift to make repairs or cleaning a breeze.  The second draw will receive what the first winner does not choose.
There will be the usual contests and hundreds of prizes.  We will again have children's games designed by and ran by children.  Every child will be a winner and the tickers will only be 25 cents each.
I don't know about you but it all sounds like a lot of fun.  If you would like to sell buttons and/or deliver flyers, donate food, help with traffic or lineup of just what ever you can that would be great, just let me know so we don't duplicate resources.   Foods needed are carrots, celery, pies, cakes, individual packs of chips, or hamburger buns.  I would like to know as soon as possible about food donations so I know how to buy.  Everything that is donated will mean that much more money to get toys.
Thanks and God bless you all. Rose and toy run committee.
Marquee PAC hosting 4-H during Art Walk
Oct. 1-8, 2017 is the celebration of National 4-H Week.  The Sunrise 4-H Club will be providing the October Art Walk Showing at the Marquee Performing Arts Center on Friday, Oct. 13th from 5:00-7:00.  Members will have a sample of the 26 different project areas in the 4-H program.  Please join us and enjoy the many homemade refreshments served at the showing.
Also on display will be this year's Sunrise Club National 4-H Week posters. 4-H posters produced at the national level were a traditional part of 4-H going back to the 1920's. The very first item ever offered by the National 4-H Supply Service in 1924 (before it even became a Supply Service the following year) was a 4-H poster. Graphic 4-H posters were distributed during the war years in the 1940's to support National 4-H Mobilization Week. Then in the late 1940's, annual 4-H posters were produced in time for National 4-H Week each year, a practice which lasted for decades.
Since its beginning over 100 years ago (1902), about 60 million Americans from all walks of life have been involved in 4-H. In addition, 80 countries around the world have youth programs similar to 4-H. The 4-H Youth Development Program thrives because of a unique partnership with the public and private sectors who contribute at the local, state, and national level. Not only does this partnership include financial support, but many business people volunteer their time and talents for the boys and girls who are enrolled in 4-H. Support at the local level is received through the help of many businesses, financial institutions, civic organizations, and service groups.
To join a county 4-H club, see enrollment information at 4honline.com or call the local county extension office, 620-221-5450.
