OCTOBER NEWS from the PARTNERSHIP
In light of recent drug-related arrests in our county, it is more important than ever to ramp up prevention efforts and save others from going down the same misguided path. Join us in our prevention efforts this October. While September was Recovery Month and focused on treatment, October is Prevention Month and focuses on the other vital end of the continuum. Prevention works! Let's heal our families, empower our youth, and make Tioga County a healthy place to live, work, and play.
I want to be involved! What can I do?
  • Educate yourself: get a sense of the issue we are facing! Sign up for this eye-opening community event featuring the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), co-sponsored by the Tioga County Partnership for Community Health in cooperation with Project Bald Eagle, being hosted at Mansfield University: (FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.) REGISTER for the DEA Drug Threat Assessment
  •  Volunteer to be a part of a community prevention effort! For every dollar put toward prevention, communities save by avoiding spending due to incarceration and treatment costs. Prevention can also save families from the heartache caused by addiction. Our Communities That Care (CTC) workgroup focuses on prevention through healthy youth development. Currently, local data is being collected. Soon the workgroup will pore through the new data and prioritize risk factors in our county using the CTC process. Don't be shy! This is a learning process for all! Contact McKenna Light at [email protected] to learn about meeting times. Jump in!
IT'S ALL ABOUT PREVENTION
Driving Simulators Educate Teens

Safe Teen Driver Events are again being planned around the county for each school district this fall thanks to the planning efforts of our Safe Kids Workgroup members. Teens will learn from Pa State Police Community Service Officer/Trooper Angela Beiber,  Tioga County District Attorney Krista Deats , and the Wellsboro Police Dept.  Each will share their unique perspective on teen driving safety issues.  Wellsboro Police Dept. will present Survival 101; a presentation that educates teens about the importance of seat belt use, the dangers of impaired driving, and the laws and dangers of texting while driving. Part of the presentation includes a section that talks about different fatal crashes and their causes. The hope is that teens will learn to recognize when they are in a compromising and unsafe situation before it is too late. Thanks to the efforts of Safe Kids   Workgroup member and Penn DOT Safety Press Officer, Kim Smith who reached out to  Geisinger's Outreach/Injury Prevention Coordinator for Trauma and Trauma Education Resource Nurse Deb Erdman, the virtual driving simulators will be available for these events.  Each Safe Teen Driver event will also feature  "fatal vision" goggles. Both will educate teens of the dangers of  distracted driving and impairment. The Tioga County Partnership would like to thank Shell Appalachia for generous funding for this beneficial  community safety project.
