K-State Polytechnic Snapchat filter winner announced, now available on campus
The Polytechnic Campus now has its own signature Snapchat filter! The design, a purple pennant that says "K-State Polytechnic," was chosen by students during a contest in September. Students were given the opportunity to vote on one of three creations to represent the campus and the pennant was the winning selection.
This Snapchat filter is available to add to photos taken in the Student Life Center, Technology Center, College Center and residence halls. Simply swipe right after taking a picture on Snapchat to find the design and use it to add purple pride to photos.
K-State Polytechnic also has a Snapchat filter that is aviation themed, which is available in the Aviation Center and on parts of the flight line.

Kansas State Polytechnic adds new bachelor's degree in technology education
Kansas State Polytechnic is expanding its degree options with a new offering for individuals interested in teaching technology at the high school level.
A Bachelor of Science in secondary education with a technology education endorsement is being launched at Kansas State Polytechnic in fall 2018. The degree option is a collaboration with the university's
College of Education and is designed to help address state and national needs for more science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, educators. Enrolled students will study mechanical, electronic and computer systems curriculum through Kansas State Polytechnic's engineering technology program while the education pedagogy will be supported by the College of Education.
"The mission of the Polytechnic Campus is to provide students with relevant, hands-on learning experiences that are easily transferable to various industries, and we believe technology education is an appropriate fit for our mission and that style of teaching," said Verna Fitzsimmons, CEO and dean of Kansas State Polytechnic. "We also are proud to offer a degree option where students can study an in-demand career field that directly contributes to the solution of a national education and economic concern. Thank you to the College of Education for partnering with Kansas State Polytechnic to make this offering possible."
Along with general education courses, the
technology education degree option combines 67 credit hours of mechanical engineering technology, computer systems technology, and electronic and computer engineering technology courses with 35 hours of professional pedagogical courses. To fulfill the technology content requirements, students will learn from Kansas State Polytechnic professors about such topics as basic electronics, computing principles, hardware and software fundamentals, machine design and manufacturing methods. Many of the courses include lab time and project-based assignments, so students will have a better understanding of the material and can use hands-on demonstrations in their own classrooms.
The secondary education curriculum will be taught through video conferencing by professors from the College of Education with plans to hire faculty members on the Polytechnic Campus as the degree grows. Students also will get the opportunity to teach at a local high school for one semester and will earn their official licensure upon completion of the bachelor's degree and passing of the state Praxis test.

Final week of National Cyber Security Awareness Month focuses on careers in cybersecurity
October is
National Cyber Security Awareness Month
, or NCSAM, and each week has a key security theme and related tips. This week's theme is "The Internet Wants You: Consider a Career in Cybersecurity."
According to a study by the Center for Cyber Safety and Education, by 2022, there will be a shortage of 1.8 million information security workers. Did you know that K-State Polytechnic offers courses at the graduate level related to cybersecurity?

Flight team places 4th at regionals, chosen for safety award
The K-State Polytechnic flight team is demonstrating why the professional pilot program is considered one of the best in the nation.
The team took part in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's SAFECON regional Oct. 16-20 and earned fourth place overall against other schools like the University of Oklahoma and University of Central Missouri. The team also was chosen for the competition's safety award, which is
presented to the team that has the highest adherence to a safety culture during the contest.
The SAFECON regional took place at the Council Bluffs Municipal Airport in Iowa and incorporated nine different events into competition play, from aircraft recognition to computer accuracy to navigation. Several K-State Polytechnic Flight Team members had significant individual placings in these events, including senior Jacob Mitchell tying for second place in power-off landing, junior Maddie Perry and Mitchell tying with each other for fourth in short field landing, and Mitchell earning fourth in Top Scoring Contestant out of 66 pilots.
Along with competing, the flight team also uses their time together to host aviation events for the public, like Fly K-State Academy for high school students and Wildcat Safety Stand Down for professionals.

Kansas State Polytechnic hosts almost 80 students, parents for Junior/Senior Day
Welcome to the Wildcat family!
Kansas State Polytechnic's admissions office hosted close to 80 guests on Oct. 20 for Fall Junior/Senior Day, welcoming prospective students and their parents or guardians to campus.
During their visit, students participated in an interactive session explaining the Polytechnic style of learning. They also attended breakout groups in their degree area of interest, taking part in hands-on demonstrations and meeting with potential future faculty.
After lunch, parents and students heard from current Wildcats who sat on a panel and answered questions about life on campus. There were tours of the Student Life Center and residence halls and students even set up a club and activities fair for the guests so they could experience how Wildcats get involved.
Dr. Christopher Smith, executive director of enrollment management, said 71 percent of the students and parents that were invited and RSVPed to the event attended, which surpassed the admissions office's 60 percent goal.

As K-Staters, we have long referred to ourselves as family and when I see the collaboration and camaraderie that was on display for the recent networking and career fair, that sentiment rings true even more so.
I am proud of every individual that was involved with creating, organizing and executing "Experience the Future." Thank you for
spending additional time working out every detail and making sure the event was professional and fun.
This campus pulled together to pull off an important event for both students and the employers taking part, and the results were astounding.
It is this teamwork and sense of pride in the Polytechnic Campus that makes us unique and special.

Another great example of how the members of this campus work together for its advancement is the Fall Junior/Senior Day that was on Oct. 20. I want to thank everyone who had a hand in making this event possible and for showcasing our value to prospective students. Each one of us has a role in helping our enrollment grow and our campus flourish, and when we collaborate on things like this event, I am confident our future is bright.

Employee Tuition Assistance and Spouse/Dependent Grant
1. Employee Tuition Assistance
Award amount is for tuition only in a K-State course for up to 3 credit hours per term.
The maximum award amount will not exceed the value of 3 hours at the in-state Manhattan/Salina tuition rate (ie. campus fees, other institutional fees, etc. are the responsibility of the employee).

Spouse/Dependent Grants (Only REGULAR employees are eligible. If you are unsure if you are REGULAR or TERM, check your contract or with the HR office.)
For Dependents or Spouses that are enrolled full time in a degree terminating undergraduate program, the award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 7 undergraduate course credits, where full-time for an undergraduate is defined as at least 12 enrolled credit hours per regular fall/spring term.
For Spouses that are enrolled part-time in a degree terminating undergraduate program the maximum award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 3 undergraduate course credits, where part-time for an undergraduate is defined as less than 12 enrolled credit hours per regular fall/spring term. (Enrollment of less than 3 credit hours, will result in the proration of the award i.e. 2 credit hours enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 2 credit hours - or - 1 credit hour enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 1 credit hour. )
Dependents that are enrolled less than full-time in an undergraduate program are not eligible for the K-State Dependent/Spouse Grant.
