Roxbury Educators Expand Makerspace with littleBits
Roxbury High School was the place to be Tuesday. A handful of Roxbury educators and students had a chance to see the next level to Makerspace. District Media Specialists from grades 5-12, spent the day playing while being trained with the newest edition to their media centers.
littleBits, out of New York, came to present a few of their Makerspace kits to over thirty educators from Roxbury and surrounding school districts along with a handful of robotics and STEM students from Eisenhower Middle School and Roxbury High School.
Marc Keller, the Education General Manager with littleBits said,
"The whole idea is getting kids to talk about how to use technology. Our kids spend more than 11 hours with electronic devices every day, but most of them don't know how they work, or how to make their own. This gets them thinking where they can reconstruct, create, invent, remix, and improve."
Roxana Caivano, the Media Specialist at Roxbury High School has had a small makerspace section in her media center. "I had a makerspace last year, but it was a dollar store makerspace. Makerspace can start with paper airplanes and craft items. We made iPhone amplifiers, airplanes, origami, and maracas in the past. littleBits takes makerspace to the next level. I envision it as something the kids get excited about!"

Roxbury Chamber Had Them Lined Up For Its 5th Annual Yard Sale
The parking lot at Roxbury's Horseshoe Lake Park was teeming with bargain hunters Saturday eager to get to the 5th Annual Community Yard Sale sponsored by The Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce.
Always a popular event, this year's version was even more successful due to the spectacular weather that kept potential buyers streaming in all day. The giant yard sale was created by the Chamber of Commerce to create a safe and organized way for local residents to sell their wares - all in one place - while giving potential customers the advantage of 1-stop shopping. Since there was no charge for parking or admission, shoppers could spend their entire budget on their purchases.
The popular fundraiser procures local vendors who purchase 12-foot by 12-foot spots for their various craft, antique or collectible offerings. Those proceeds are then donated to worthy Roxbury causes: Roxbury Social Services, the Roxbury Historical Society, the Roxbury Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund and others. Roxbury Officials Privately Ponder Legalities of Courting Amazon for Hercules Tract
Roxbury officials met behind closed doors this week to discuss the legal ramifications of joining the throng of other municipalities across the nation courting Amazon, Inc. to be the site of the mega-retailer's proposed second American headquarters.
The former Hercules Powder Co. site in Roxbury is 1,200 acres, is close to an interstate highway, has access to railroads and has been empty for years. To some Roxbury officials, that sounds like a good place for Amazon to build its proposed
"HQ2" project
, a venture expected to bring about 50,000 jobs.
The matter was discussed by the Roxbury Mayor and Council on Tuesday in an executive session under the cloak of "attorney-client privilege," confirmed Roxbury Township Clerk Amy Rhead and Roxbury Township Counsel Anthony Bucco. Attorney-client privilege is one of the nine exemptions from the state Open Public Meetings Law, the "Sunshine Law," that requires public bodies to discuss most business in public.

Roxbury Softball Complex Wins County Award
 A
decision in August to submit the Landing Park Recreation Complex Road for a county award paid off for the Roxbury Mayor and Council: The park was recently chosen a winner, the council announced Tuesday.

The award will be presented at an Oct. 12 awards dinner.
