Dear Parents,

Christmas is definitely around the corner and preparations are hotting up here at The Gregg Prep!  I hope you have received the email about the dates and arrangements for our festivities. If not, please contact the office.

It was lovely to see so many of you at Parents' Evenings this week.  On Monday 27th November we have our informal Open Classroom event from 3.30 - 4.30 pm where your child can show you their classrooms and share their work with you.

Next week, our Form 5 children are going to The Gregg School for a Science afternoon and on Friday 1st December, they will be joined by the Form 6's for the Bridges 4 Schools Engineering Day.  Both events are sure to be exciting and further strengthen our links with our senior school.

On Thursday 30th November, the whole school will be taking part in the Tudor House Charity event which is a welly walk for Africa which will be done in The Gregg School grounds.  More details to follow but definitely time to dust off the wellies and check them for spiders!

Looking ahead our Term dates for next academic year, 2018-19, are now available, please click on the link in advance dates.

Reminder please log on to the  imagojuniors website to order school photographs, the deadline for orders is  22nd November.

Mrs Caddy
Form 6 this week
As well as our Poetry Slam assembly this week, we will be preparing for our next house meetings on Friday morning!  The children will be looking at their new house badge design competition as well as discussing and preparing for house charity days.

In English, we will be completing and performing the poems we have written as part of a Poetry Slam assembly to Key Stage 2!  Our poems are themed around Winter, Food and 'A blank piece of paper'. We are looking forward to sharing our work to a live audience who will vote on their favourite at the end of teach round.  The audience score plus the judges (Mr Milton, Mr Pascoe and Mrs Caddy!) will then determine the overall winner of this Year's poetry slam!

In Maths, we will be completing our unit on worded problems and number operations before starting a unit on measurement.  We will be converting between different units of measure in the context of length, mass, volume and time.

In Science, we will be exploring different challenges (e.g. bulb brightness and circuit construction) and then seeking to explain how changes like increasing or decreasing the voltage will effect those circuits.  In our comparing places topic, we will continue to compare the human and physical geography of our School location with other more rural Schools around the country.  And in R.S., we will be exploring why the idea of 'incarnation' is so important to Christians.
Form 5 this week

In Form 5 this week we will be busy rehearsing our Form assembly, we hope to see you on Wednesday at 9am!

We will continue with a grammar focus in English next week looking at adverbs, modal verbs and possibility.

In Maths this week, we have spent quite a lot of time consolidating division with and without remainders. Next week, we will move over to multiplying again, focusing on using formal methods for 4 digit x 1 or 2 digit numbers.

In our Geography topic of 'Enough for Everyone' we will begin to look at where our food comes from.

In Form 5 in Science this week we are investigating which materials make the best electrical conductors. We will be revising our circuit knowledge and then the children will be building their own circuits and testing a variety of different materials to test their conductive properties. It could well be hair raising!

In Art, we will paint and varnish our wonderful William Morris styled tiles.

Coming up in Form 1
Maths: This week is all about addition strategies. The children will be looking at how we can use hops to move forward one step at a time and a jump to move forward ten steps at a time, using a number line. They will need to solve different addition problems using one and two digit numbers and will need to explain how they worked each of their answers out.

English: This week the children will continue to look at 'The Great Fire of London'. They will be focusing on the writer Samuel Pepys and looking at how his diary helped us to understand some of the events, which happened during and after this tragedy. The children will be having a go at writing their own diary entry and will be basing this upon the experiences of their chosen person who was involved in 'The Great Fire of London'.

In Science this week, the children will be looking at which materials are magnetic and which are non-magnetic. They will start by predicting which materials they think will be magnetic or non-magnetic, giving their reasons why and then testing each of them to see. The children will then be comparing the materials that were magnetic or non-magnetic and discussing whether there are any similarities or differences between each of them.

Coming up for Form 3
In Maths this week, Form 3 will recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.  Children will write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental strategies and progressing to formal written methods.

English this week will be a continuation of looking at stories from different cultures. The class have been reading the story of The Tiger Child. This week the focus will be on the story of Rama and Sita.  The children will plan their version of the story and re-tell it to the class. Alongside writing their stories the children will learn how to write descriptive sentences and add suffixes to enhance their work.

In Science, Form 3 will continue looking at rocks. It's time to put scientific detection skills to the test with some exciting soil investigation activities. The children will discover the answers to some important questions about soil and learn just how important it is to life on our planet!

In Form 2 this week

Poor Guy Fawkes!  He thought he would solve the problem on the King, unfortunately (thankfully) his plan was foiled.

We will be using a number line to add and subtract 1s and 10s in Maths next week, when your children are confident, they will then use the column method to work out their answers.  We will start very slowly by adding a 1 digit number to a digit number.  Your children will continue to learn their 2s, 10s, 5s and 3 times tables in the knowledge that they will be able to use their recall skills when problem solving.

The next form of text to look at and learn about is the information page, your children look through them every day, but next week we will look at their form and what features we can find.  Concentrating on: headings, sub-headings, facts, pictures, diagrams and captions.  Your children will be conversing about dogs and then writing facts about their special dreed.  Ending the week with our usual spellings.

In Science we will be having fun with materials which change shape.  Your children will be using their forces and warmth of their hands to find out which materials change shape and which do not.  Of the materials that do change shape, how do we change their shape?  Squashing, bending, stretching and twisting are the key forces.

The Gunpowder plot is so fascinating but who was Thomas Percy?
The plot continues...

Reception and Preschool in the coming week

This week we will continue our theme about Autumn festivals, by discussing and investigating the rituals linked to 'Hannukah'.  We are hoping the children will share what they know and enjoy researching more about this festival.

Our 'Book of the Week' is 'Hannukah', in which a child tells the story about their experience of this festival.

Phonic of the Week: 'e'

Letters and Sounds focus: Rhythm and Rhyme

Another fantastic week in Early Years has seen us begin to practice our end of term show. The children have had some fantastic moments of learning this week which you can see in your child's Tapestry account. Thank you so much for sharing some of your learning at home with us through Tapestry this last week.

Nest week we will be looking at 'How Big is a Million' by Anna Millbourne. We will be writing our own adventure stories and using all of the skills we have learnt so fair to make our stories exciting and interesting. In our Maths learning next week, we will be introducing symmetry and pattern.

We are running short on spare clothes at the moment. We do ask that all children have a spare set of clothes, including underwear, at all times. However, we are running very low of our 'in school' spares. If you have any old clothes at home that you may be willing to donate, particularly socks, we would be extremely grateful.

Form 4 this week
It was lovely to have the opportunity to meet with you all on parents evening. Thank you for your on going support and suggestions. I shall be including a recommended reading list for Year 4 along with suggestions of multiplication apps for the children to take home on Friday. Please look out for these in book bags.

Maths: T he children have been working very hard on their learning of equivalent fractions this week. Next week, we shall continue with fraction work and exploring finding fractions of a given amount through word problems. They will use their earlier knowledge of fractions and consider what the denominator is telling them to be able to consider what operation will be needed to calculate more that one. We shall then be looking at when hundredths arise and finding one hundredth of a number.

English:  Continuing with the planning of our own narratives based on the text Journey, the children will be looking at the techniques to include in their work to use description to engage the reader as well as different writing techniques to build up tension. Peer and self reflection is very important, so the children will be identifying and suggesting improvements in each others writing as well as their own. This will be the final week focusing on this.

Next week in Science we shall be learning about teeth! We shall be identifying the different types of human teeth and considering their functions. We shall be comparing the teeth of herbivores and carnivores and looking closely at the jaw bone of different animals to determine if they are herbivores or carnivores.
