SCIENCE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES PEF GRANT

Dr. John Svitak, Mr. Lou Morton and Mrs. Debbie Crosby pose with one of the mini-robots programmed in computer science class this year.
The Saint Vincent de Paul High School Science Department is proud and extremely thankful to be a recipient of a Petaluma Educational Foundation Impact Grant of $14,568.00 to be used to triple our current laptop inventory with the purchase of twenty-four more laptops and two additional storage carts.

“This is absolutely vital for our science programs where we are continually expanding the use of computers in the lab and in the classroom and are already contending for the existing laptops. It also allows for every student in a class to have a laptop rather than sharing with another student. As far as our burgeoning Computer Science program is concerned these additional laptops are a godsend for obvious reasons. We are very grateful and honored to have been chosen for this competitive and prestigious grant.” states Dr. John S vitak, AP Computer Science and Physics teacher.

The Petaluma Educational Foundation (PEF) administers the PEF Impact Grant Program to enable teachers, schools, and districts to bring innovative and effective instructional ideas to reality despite ongoing economic challenges. Grants totaling over $3.1 million have been awarded to Petaluma area schools since 1983. PEF grants support quality instruction, student access and impact, and innovation aligned with a school or district’s overall goals.

ECON WEEK...IT'S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY
"Its an incredibly spirited week, everyone working together.
Money is spent, and profits are being made yet every penny goes back into the student experience." —MR. REYNOLDS
Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.

The much awaited Econ week takes place twice a year at SVdP, when all seniors in the semester-long Economics class create a start-up food venture with profit and loss statements and a business plan. Seniors take over the inner-courtyard every break and lunch period. They work in teams of two to five, sometimes enlisting family members to help cook favorite recipes at home from scratch; other times they resell popular donut brands at a profit. It's a lively time with overflowing lunch plates and price reductions as the lunch hour draws to a close.

Running this week for the twenty-ninth time, Econ teacher Mr. Nick Reynolds
brainstormed the popular assignment
fifteen years ago. Students buy their vendor slot with a portion of their profits—a minimum bid being 25%. There are better and worse spots for traffic and bottle-neck issues. All store location fees go into the Econ Week Fund which is used for senior scholarships, leadership events, and purchases which enhance the student experience. The popular blue lunch tables, water bottle fountains at SVdP, and more have been purchased from the $35-40,000 in profit earned.

This year the class is excited to purchase a custom iron gate for the back entrance to the school, commemorating St. Vincent de Paul's Centennial year.

DON'T DO THIS!...yet.
Mr. O'Toole's students spend the week loving and caring for their flour sack babies morning, noon, and all night long! Then they calculate the costs for the apartment or home to raise their child in and keep her well fed. They also interview parents to learn how having children has impacted their lives. Jacob Dunbar states he "would like to have some little flour children, but not until I have some money saved."
