OCTOBER 2017
Greetings!

Within days of the 2017-2018 school year beginning, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities was already receiving requests from administrators, educators, students, and parents regarding incidents of bullying, conflict, and marginalization.  These inquiries spanned issues ranging from race, gender identity, religion, immigration, and more.

VCIC added several staff positions over the summer in anticipation of another busy school year.  Fortunately, that expansion has meant that we have been able to quickly respond and provide support when these inquiries have been made.  Additionally, our organization has been working to enhance our program offerings and thought leadership to support institutions to be proactive in preventing hatred. One such contribution is the VCIC-authored cover story in this month's issue of the Virginia Journal of Education titled "Putting Out the Welcome Mat for ALL Students."

This update includes details about upcoming VCIC programs, as well as many local and national resources.  Please let us know how VCIC can partner with you.   Contact our office by phone at (804) 515-7950 or by emailing  Jessica Hawthorne  (Director of Programs) or  Marcos Martinez  (Educational Programs Coordinator).

We look forward to working with you!
Responding to Hate

Educators across Virginia are increasingly looking for support after incidents of bias, bullying, and discrimination.   To support administrators, teachers, staff, and students, VCIC has compiled articles, books, and curriculum to guide schools in responding to hate.
