Creative Aging Workshop for Teaching Artists    
Friday, October 27, 2017 | 9:30am - 5:30pm
Escalante Multi-Generational Center | 2150 E. Orange St, Tempe AZ
Presented through the AZ Creative Aging initiative, a program of the Arizona Commission on the Arts, generously supported by Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, this day-long professional development workshop will focus on teaching artistry in the field of Creative Aging. Through panel discussions, interactive learning sessions, and dynamic presentations, facilitators will address a holistic approach to thinking about the fundamentals of Creative Aging and the aging process. Participants will explore creative aging program design and their own approach as teachers, artists and practitioners through the principles of cultural responsiveness, person-centered engagement/care and a process-based approach.
 
This workshop is primarily geared toward teaching artists, but practitioners and providers of any kind, interested in the field of Creative Aging, are welcome to attend.
 
Space is limited; advance registration is required.

Register Your School for Arizona Poetry Out Loud     
Deadline: Tuesday, October 31, 2017
Registration is closing soon for 2018 Arizona Poetry Out Loud! Teachers who would like to participate register their schools for the program. Once registered, each participating teacher/school site receives a toolkit, which includes a program guide to help teach recitation and performance and a DVD and companion guide for learning recitation-free of charge.
 
Poetry Out Loud is a poetry recitation contest for high school students that begins in classrooms across the country and culminates with the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington D.C. where champions from all 50 states compete for a total of
$50,000 in scholarships and school stipends, including a $20,000 college scholarship
for the Poetry Out Loud National Champion.

Digital Stories
Digital Stories by Arizona Classroom Teachers     
In partnership with CommunityShare, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, The University of Arizona Poetry Center, and City Center for Collaborative Learning, Creative Narrations recently offered a 4-day professional development session on digital storytelling for classroom teachers. Drawing upon their own experiences as learners, teachers and education advocates, these stories are intended to spark wider community engagement and ongoing conversation around how to create a healthier system for learning.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
MEGA Conference "A World of Opportunities"
November 14-16, 2017 | Litchfield Park, AZ 
This annual conference led by the Arizona Department of Education will provide workshops and keynote presentations sharing strategies and resources on implementing Title I programs and services with the transition to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), as well as provide networking opportunities for school leaders and opportunities to highlight and celebrate effective practices.

National Guild for Community Arts Education Annual Conference
November 15-18, 2017 | San Francisco/Oakland, CA  
The National Guild conference is an annual gathering of the nonprofit arts education community, providing learning, networking, and other tools to ensure all people have opportunities to maximize their creative potential. Attendees can develop new skills, share effective practices, and build relationships with colleagues. This year's conference will focus on how arts education can serve as a source of hope, healing, and strength in challenging times.
 
RESEARCH & PUBLICATIONS
New Report Reveals Findings about Arts and Health
Older adults who create art and attend arts events have better health outcomes than adults who do neither is one of the conclusions in a new report published by the National Endowment for the Arts.  Staying Engaged: Health Patterns of Older Americans Who Engage in the Arts  presents the first detailed look at arts participation habits, attitudes toward the arts, and related health characteristics of adults aged 55 and older. More information is in the    Staying Engaged fact sheet and the Arts Data Profile  with an interactive graphic.

Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge Opens for High School Students
Submission Deadline: January 5, 2018
The National Endowment for the Arts is expanding its Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge from last year's three-city pilot to a national program available to all high school songwriters working in any musical genre. Applicants submit a recording of an original song that could appear in a musical theater show. Winners will receive scholarships and more.

2018 Scholastic Awards Celebrate the Work of Young Artists and Writers
Arizona Deadline: December 14, 2017 
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is accepting submissions of original work that demonstrate technical skill and reflect a personal voice or vision for its 2018 Scholastic Awards. Public, private or home-school students enrolled in seventh-12th grade are eligible to submit their work. Deadlines for submission vary by geographic region.

October Is National Arts and Humanities Month     
National Arts and Humanities Month celebrates and recognizes the powerful role that the arts and humanities play throughout daily life and the lasting impact they have on the nation's culture and history. Reestablished in 1993 by Americans for the Arts and national arts partners, this celebration highlights the importance and significance of diverse mediums of self-expression and creativity that bring communities together from across the country, with key goals of:
  • Focusing on the arts at local, state and national levels.
  • Encouraging individuals and organizations to participate in the arts.
  • Allowing governments and businesses to show their support of the arts.
  • Raising public awareness about the role the arts and humanities play in our communities and lives.

FUNDING
Youth Arts & Culture Engagement Grant
Application Deadline: October 20, 2017
Facilitated by the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture's Youth Arts & Culture Council (YACC) the Youth Arts+Culture Engagement Grant is a funding opportunity for youth-led arts and culture advisory boards, councils, art groups, clubs, and similar organizations to create projects which support the artistic and cultural work of young people or projects which introduce youth to arts and culture in the City of Phoenix.

Professional Development Grants
CYCLE C Deadline: 11:59pm Thursday, February 1, 2018
Professional Development Grants provide funding support for participation in artistic development and skills building activities or opportunities that contribute to professional growth and career development. 

Eligible project activities must take place between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.

Arts Learning and Collaboration Grants
CYCLE C Deadline: 11:59pm Thursday, February 1, 2018
Arts Learning Collaboration Grants enhance the work of school-based arts teaching and learning programs through collaborative projects taking place in-school (during regular school hours), after-school, or during summer/inter-session and in-services.

Eligible project activities must take place between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.

Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants
CYCLE C Deadline: 11:59pm Thursday, February 1, 2018      
Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants support partnerships that foster meaningful arts learning experiences in a variety of community settings for learners of any age. Community/social service organizations or governmental entities partnered with arts organizations or professional teaching artists are eligible to apply.

Eligible project activities must take place between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.
