Manu Platt: Why wait to make a positive impact?
Dr. Manu Platt understands why people sometimes wait to advocate for causes they find important. They postpone those efforts while chasing educational goals, work goals, and life in general.
And often times, it is easier and safer to not get involved in an issue that could be controversial or resisted.
However, during his Diversity Award Lecture at the 2017 BMES Annual Meeting, Platt asked, "Why wait for everything to be safe? Why wait to start having an impact?"
Platt described his journey from growing up with five brothers in a military family that made several moves, to being an associate professor at Georgia Tech and Emory.
And along the way he dedicated himself to creating opportunities for all people, especially those who are underrepresented in the STEM fields
While much work remains, Platt said BMES and its members can play a key role expanding opportunities.
"We are the Society that can make these changes," he said.
BMES President State of the Society: Record setting meeting, new partnerships & 50th Anniversary
BMES President Dr. Lori Setton kicked off the first full day of the 2017 BMES Annual Meeting with her State of the Society.
Work in the area of diversity was particularly strong for the Society in 2016/17 Setton said.
Through a grant from the Wallace H Coulter Foundation, the Society began to develop its Minority Network.
The Society also signed an MOU with the National Society of Black Engineers to assist that organization with many of its goals.
Finally, Setton reminded attendees that next year the Society will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. She encouraged members to get involved. One way to do that is by visiting the 50th Anniversary website: www.bmes.org/50
NIBIB Lecture: Dr. Feng Zhang
Dr. Feng Zhang gave the NIH NIBIB Lecture Thursday evening and shared details about the work he and his lab are doing in the area of gene editing and CRISPR-Cas systems.
While Zhang and his colleagues -- as well as other researchers in the field -- are making great strides in creating therapeutic treatments based on the technology, "We are still at the tip of the iceberg," he said.
