Title: Reading, Writing, and Relationships

Description: Reading, 'Riting, and 'Rithmetic-the three R's-are the traditional building blocks for education. Instruction for life, however, requires additional attention to a fourth R: Relationships. In this session, we will demonstrate how adult educators can read aloud selections from engaging fiction and informative non-fiction sources that deal with relationships. Instructors can model for their adult students how to apply their critical thinking and reading skills as they read aloud; instructors can then lead the class to focus on what makes relationships thriving or dysfunctional. Adult students can reflect and respond in writing to what they have been reading and discussing in class (their written responses do not have to be shared with the instructor unless the students want to). Many texts will be recommended and writing prompts suggested which are bound to result in meaningful discussions in the adult education classroom.

From Oracy to Literacy and Back Again
Investing in the Education of Adults,
To Improve the Educability of Children!

An anthology of brief notes by Tom Sticht

During September 24-30, 2017, we celebrate Adult Education & Family Literacy Week. For some, particularly those new to adult education, it may not be clear just how adult education for adults may enhance the literacy development of their children.

For this reason, I have compiled a 28-page anthology of 13 brief notes of mine, with 11 illustrations and references for the professional development use of adult educators who would like to further explore the role of adult education in family literacy.

Free Computer Science Programs
for Educators & Students
Jobs in computing are growing at twice the national rate of other types of work. By 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts there will be one million more computer science jobs than graduating students qualified for them.
To help prepare our students for the future, Google provides a number of free, technology-focused programs for educators and students.

#educateandelevate #aeflweek, Amazing Adult Learners

Dear COABE members,

I am delighted to share that COABE's fourth Capitol Hill Day took place during Adult Education and Family Literacy Week and was a wonderful success, with over 110 meetings scheduled with legislators and their staff! This brings our total meetings with legislators over the last 2 years, to more than 315 meetings! Sixty plus leaders and 8 students, from nearly all 50 states,  joined together to walk the Halls of Congress as we made our voice heard on the Hill on behalf of Adult Education.

I would like to thank our Committee for Advocacy and Public Policy (CAPP) Chair, Polly Smith, along with Christine Heinrich, our Coordinator, for their incredible work on all the materials and coordination related to Capitol Hill Day!

At the same time, members in the field used the simple "3 clicks/quick fire" COABE advocacy tool to contact their mayors, governors, legislators, and legislative staff which boosted our efforts while on the Hill. Many of the legislators and staff members we talked with said that they had been hearing repeatedly and often from our members. At this time, more than 33,000 contacts have been made! Keep up the good work, and please help us keep up the momentum. If you have not contacted your legislator, you can do that today,  HERE.

All of our advocacy efforts are supported through a generous partnership with Aztec Software. We thank them for their support!

Sincerely,

Sharon Bonney

Mediaplanet Launches "Online Education" Campaign Featuring Coalition on Adult Basic Education

Mediaplanet, an independent publisher of content-marketing campaigns, today announces distribution of its tenth cross-platform edition of "Online Education." The campaign aims to highlight online education in its various forms. Mediaplanet has joined forces with the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) to educate readers on its Educate and Elevate Campaign which is working to raise awareness on the many faces and relevancy on adult education.

Starting on September 27th, featured within USA TODAY and on Mediaplanet's digital content hub, COABE shares how their campaign is working to urge policy makers on why the continuation of funding is necessary. In 2014, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act called for adult education to be funded at a level of $649 million. Now, threats have been made to cut funding by $95 million on issues like adult education and literacy as well as cut by $9 billion from the Department of Education budget in 2018. Their campaign is a national endeavor aimed at highlighting how an investment in adult education represents a bold commitment to America's future

Our public education system and workforce training systems are predicated on linearity--that youth seamlessly transition from grade school to high school to college, then work. And it presupposes that, once employed, adults climb a well-defined career ladder, with each rung offering progressively greater job responsibility and remuneration. Life is seldom so orderly.
