A message from your President...

Dear Colleagues,
I hope this message finds you all well. As we finished up the first weeks of school, whether you are in K-12 or the college/university level, those first few days are always exciting and bring many new challenges. One challenge that remains the same for K-12 health and physical education is NJAHPERD Strong!

It was a pleasure to attend the Active Schools/CSPAP conference. Thanks to all our presenters, Executive Director, Jackie Malaska, and VP of Physical Activity, Colleen McCurry for putting on a wonderful professional development!

Heading into the fall, I encourage you to register early for our NJAHPERD Convention in February. My hope is that you attend to find ways to improve your greatness in working with students and teaching. We are bringing in dynamic, award-winning presenters to help you expand your repertoire of teaching strategies! Registration will be available through the Community Portal on October 15th.  The Purchase Order approval form is posted on the website  along with a preview of invited speakers and Pre-Convention offerings.

I also encourage you all to take a "time out". Fall has begun! It is a crisp season filled with color, great smells, amazing temperatures, and a relaxing atmosphere for outdoor activities. Take advantage and do something you enjoy with friends and family.

In closing, I encourage you to bring your colleagues into the world of NJAHPERD. We are only as strong as our members. With benefits like access to resources, up-to-date info on grants and advocacy issues, and professional development, there is no better time to become a NJAHPERD member!

Sincerely,

Advocacy
Advocacy Priorities

NJAHPERD Advocacy Committee is committed to the following legislative priorities as approved by the Executive Board.

Joanne Doherty
Ensure Mandatory School Recess for Elementary School Children   (K-5) Becomes Law
NJAHPERD will continue to advocate for a law requiring a minimum daily 20 minute recess period for elementary school students in NJ, either through legislation (A-2469 Peterson/DiMaio/Jasey/Wimberly   S-1144 Turner/Diegnan) or regulation. NJAHPERD will also advocate that recess not replace the health and physical education course requirements specified by law in NJ schools.

Advocate for Health and Physical Education Teacher Certification
NJAHPERD will advocate for legislation that requires elementary school teachers in NJ (K-6) to possess the appropriate endorsement to their teaching certificate to teach health and physical education in New Jersey (A-3964 Jasey/Caputo/ Muoio S-2323 Turner/Diegnan). Existing teachers will be grandfathered.
This law will ensure that certified health and physical education teachers receive appropriate, comprehensive training and necessary pedagogical preparation, and will ensure that NJ students are receiving effective instruction by a specialist in required health and physical education courses.

Show Importance of 150 Minute Health, Safety and Physical Education Mandate:
NJ law requires every public school student in grades 1-12 to receive 150 minutes of health, safety and physical education per week. NJAHPERD will provide information to school administrators discussing the importance of this mandate and how it can be followed in their schools.

Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA)
On the federal level, ESSA replaced the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Health and physical education are included in the law's definition of a well-rounded education, along with 17 other subjects. However, strong state and local support is needed to ensure that funding for school health and physical education is available under this new law

Update New Jersey Drivers Education Testing Requirements
Many NJAHPERD members teach drivers education courses in their local schools. Driver education testing requirements have not been updated since 2011. NJAHPERD will work to ensure that the testing requirements are updated and adopted by the NJ Department of Education and NJ Motor Vehicle Commission ("MVC").

Please contact me if you have any questions or comments regarding any of NJAHPERD Advocacy efforts.

Thank you,

JoAnn Doherty
NJAHPERD Advocacy Chair
