Scholarship sets SOM student free of financial stress

Medical school is not an easy task, and financial woes are added stress. Without scholarship support, third-year medical student Marcus Daniels questions his chances of becoming a doctor. 

"Scholarships have allowed me to pursue my passions without fear. I can pursue my dreams and aspirations without the ever-present question of 'will I make enough money to pay off my debts?'" said Daniels, t he recipient of the Oliver and Elizabeth Laster Scholarship for Medical Education and the Levi Watkins, Jr. M.D. Scholarship. Alumni Sponsor 120 Stethoscopes 
1st-year students receive symbol of profession 

Thanks to the generosity of 94 Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine alumni, the entire Class of 2021 received the ultimate symbol of their profession: the stethoscope.  Each sponsored stethoscope included an enclosed card with the name of the alumni donor and a special note.  The Oct. 4 ceremony hosted by the Johns Hopkins Medical & Surgical Association sets the tone for the rest of their experience at Johns Hopkins. Alumni and faculty joined the celebration to share stories of their medical school experiences. 
MD Student Wins Baltimore Marathon 
First-time participant takes overall male title

Jordan Tropf, a fourth-year student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, placed first in the 17th annual Baltimore Marathon on Oct. 21. In his first time competing in the race, Tropf became the overall male winner.   Though, he is certainly not new to marathons. In this past April's Boston Marathon, he was Maryland's top finisher, placing 51st overall. Alumna Named Department Director
Horton to lead Radiology and Radiological Sciences

Class of 1992's Karen M. Horton, M.D., has been named director of the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science effective Oct. 1. She had been interim director of the department and chairman of the board of Johns Hopkins Medical Imaging, LLC, since February 2016.  Horton has distinguished herself as an innovative and effective leader since joining the radiology faculty as an assistant professor in 1998.  In 2008, she became the 144th woman within the school of medicine to be promoted to professor at Hopkins.  Read more
Rothman Appointed to Second Term 
Dean & CEO praised for extraordinary leadership

With enthusiastic support from university and Johns Hopkins Medicine leaders and colleagues, Paul Rothman has been appointed to a second term as CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine and dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He began a new six-year term this summer. Rothman became the second CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine and the 14th dean of the School of Medicine in 2012.   Read more
Home to Hopkins

Alumni will come Home to Hopkins  sooner than usual, as Biennial Meeting and Reunion goes annual. The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Reunion and Alumni Weekend will be held June 1- 2, 2018 -  with special honor to  alumni whose graduation years end in 3 or 8!   A quasquicentennial highlight, the weekend promises traditional and novel programming in celebration of the school's 125th anniversary. Invitations drop in March!
National Academy of Medicine Election 
7 SOM faculty among new members

Seven school of medicine faculty members were among the 80 new members elected to the National Academy of Medicine on Oct. 16 in conjunction with the academy's annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Read more
