October is here -- how fortunate we have been here on Long Island to enjoy an extended summer season!

As we head into the autumn months and cooler temperatures, now is a good time to step up your wellness plans and boost your immunity for the inevitable flu season.

Vitamin D deficiencies are associated with increased susceptibility to infection, so optimizing these levels now is a good way to build a robust immune system (visit out our nutraMetrix site to purchase high quality supplements).   R egular chiropractic care can also help bolster your immune system.  Correcting misalignments that can impact the fu nctioning of the central nervous system helps better equip your immune system to defend your body from disease and infection. And l ast, but not certainly not least, arming yourself and your family with a blend of infection fighting  essential oils can help keep germs at bay --attend our lecture on 10/23 to learn which oils pack the best punch!

Here's to a healthy, happy autumn season!

Yours in health,

Dr. Keri Chiappino and D r. W. Brent Reynolds

P.S.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Dr. Chiappino offers a unique program for emotional support and healing for breast cancer survivors struggling to recapture their previous happiness.  Visit www.healingboobies.com  to learn how to "get your happy back!"
ADHD vs. ADD -- Is There a Difference?
DSM-V guidelines prefers umbrella term

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder affecting approximately 11 percent of children 4-17 years of age, according to statistics published by the the Center for Disease Control.

Prior to 2013, attention disorders were classified as either ADHD or ADD, Attention Deficit Disorder. Since publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) in May of 2013, mental health professionals use the medical term "ADHD" to encompass all characteristics of the disorder, breaking it down into three sub types : 1. Inattentive 2. Hyperactive 3. Combined.

Symptoms of ADHD in girls can be harder to decipher, as girls are primarily the inattentive type -- the daydreamers, who were often overlooked or drowned out by "hyperactive" boys in the classroom. Diagnosis later on in adulthood is common in women who have brushed off poor planning, forgetfulness, messiness, in-attentiveness and disorganization as character flaws rather than true neurobiological symptoms.

Unlike other health conditions such as diabetes or cholesterol, there is no single lab test for an ADHD diagnosis.  Typically, a medical exam is conducted to rule out any possible physical causes; patients then complete a checklist for symptoms and attention span tests. Mental health professionals use t he DSM-V checklist to determine if the challenges the patient is experiencing suggest ADHD.

In our neurofeedback practice, we use a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG) to provide an objective measurement of brain-wave patterns in children and adults suspected of having an attention deficits.  Studies show that  85% of people with ADHD have specific neurological brain-wave dysregulation that can be identified in a QEEG. Data from the QEEG provide a road map to recovery via a neurofeedback brain-wave training program. Neurofeedback effectively targets the source of ADHD, helping to retrain the abnormal brain-wave patterns and overcome symptoms -- without a lifetime of reliance upon potentially dangerous ADHD medications.

Check out my video above to learn more about the nuances of ADHD.  If your gut is telling you that your preschooler, teen or even you yourself are showing signs of an attention disorder, chances are your instincts may be right.  Come in for a QEEG and find out if neurofeedback is the answer to your cognitive issues.  631.265.1223 for more info.

Dr. Chiappino Featured in Newsday's 2017 Survivor Series

As a tribute to Long Island breast cancer survivors during Breast Cancer Awareness month, Newsday is highlighting stories of hope, strength and courage throughout October.  Dr. Keri Chiappino is among the breast cancer "thrivers" who will be spotlighted this month.  Look for her story on our Facebook timeline and in Newsday in the coming days.

For Dr. Chiappino and others who have fought the big "C," becoming a thriver, not simply a survivor, can be the greatest challenge. Conquering the self-doubt, guilt, anger, anxiety, depression and fear becomes the new battle; healing the mind-body connection and recapturing your old self is the second phase of the journey, something that the medical establishment often overlooks after the all-clear is given.

Dr. Chiappino's Healing Boobies community is a unique group of thrivers who have
learned to "get their happy back" through her unique program which  encourages wholeness, healing and harmony.  If you or a loved one are trying to cope with life after the big C and are struggling to find happiness, check out   www.healingboobies.com  --learn how to rid your life of toxic emotions that cancer leaves behind and find your new "happy!"

Acupuncture Effective for Chemo Induced Neuropathy in Breast Cancer Patients

Nearly 91% of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment suffer from a common treatment-related side effect known as Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN). Pain, tingling, burning sensations, numbness and balance disorders are among the common neurotoxic side effects of chemotherapy. These symptoms not only cause discomfort, but can also be dangerous, and have the potential to cause falls and other injuries.

Researchers have found acupuncture to be effective for relieving CIPN. In a recent study, patients with CIPN symptoms reported improvements in pain measures and functional assessment after an eight-week acupuncture regimen. Neurofeedback brain-wave training is another effective, non-drug path to healing nerve damage related to chemotherapy treatments.
This unique, non-drug therapy has been shown to produce "clinically and statistically significant reductions in peripheral neuropathy," with reduced scores for worst pain, activity performance, numbness, tingling and unpleasantness.

Acupuncture offers other benefits for patients with breast cancer, including relief of hot flashes, fatigue, nausea, and pain.  If you or a loved one are suffering from CIPN, call our office to learn more about effective, holistic healing therapies. This month our licensed acupuncturist Lori Fortunato, LAc is offering $25 off an initial visit for private pay patients. Call 631.265.1223 to schedule your appointment.

Chiropractic Health Month
Back to Basics: Be Kind to Your Spine!

Your spine is literally the backbone of good health! Misalignments not only trigger pain and limit your range of motion, but can also irritate the nerves housed in the spinal column and interrupt signals sent by your brain to the rest of your body. Disruption in nerve communication can trigger a myriad of health conditions, from sciatica, muscle or joint degeneration, to vestibular problems like vertigo, and respiratory and cardiovascular issues.

This year's Chiropractic Health Month theme is "Back to Basics." Taking steps today can go a long way to preventing spine problems and pain as you age.
