Moderators Needed for Undergraduate Research Conference
Twice a year, undergraduates at UNC Asheville present their research results here on campus.  For the past 15 years, OLLI members have served as moderators for these conferences.  This is a great opportunity for all of us, OLLI members, UNC-Asheville faculty and, especially, the students.  And it is greatly appreciated by the university.

The students' research projects cover all disciplines; e.g., education, health, literature, art, science, mathematics, history, social sciences, computer science, environmental science, and many more.

A session can be 1-2 hours.  Session duties include introducing speakers, keeping within time constraints, moderating the Q&A, and thanking speakers.

If you would like to moderate a session and share the excitement with the students as they present their projects, please contact Howard Jaslow, innovalg@aol.com.  Although the upcoming conference is scheduled for December 5th, if you cannot make this one there are more to follow.  Once you are on our distribution, you will be notified when each new one is scheduled.

Dear OLLI Members,
We continue to work with UNC Asheville's transportation office to make the shuttle from Lots P1 and P2 a more viable option for OLLI members.  We understand that the office is working on a schedule for pick up in the lots as well as at the Reuter Center to create a more predictable, useful and safe experience.  We will report as soon as we have details.

We want to urge everyone to consider carpooling to reduce the number of cars on campus.  We also want to urge patience and care when you are using the parking lots around the Reuter Center.  We recognize that parking and traffic are a challenge and are doing our best to gather information and work with the right people to find workable solutions that minimize the impact of construction on our members.

While we recognize the challenges on our campus this year, we want to focus also on the many benefits of being part of UNC Asheville.  This week we have the opportunity to hear authors Wiley Cash and Charles Frazier talk about their craft and to hear about Cash's new book  The Last Ballad.  As part of OLLI's Women in STEM series you can hear Dr. Britt Lundgren of UNC Asheville's physics and astronomy department talk about women's contributions to astronomical research. You can attend Bulldog athletics events.

If you would like to work with UNC Asheville undergraduates, attend presentations by Professor Mary Lynn Manns' students later in the month or volunteer to help with Undergraduate Research presentations.  Take advantage of the many programs made possible by OLLI's community partners, special interest groups and special events, including Fab Fridays. While we have some challenges on campus, we continue to be committed to offering rich and varied programming, organized by and for members and as part of the larger UNC Asheville learning community.

With respect for all that you do to model creative retirement,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

Britt Lundgren
Speaker:  Dr. Britt Lundgren, Assistant Professor

Women have been making major contributions to the progress of astronomical knowledge in Western Science since at least the days of Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), though they have historically enjoyed limited professional recognition. This talk will highlight some of the most prominent early advances in astronomy that were made possible through the efforts of female astronomers.  The social progress in recent decades will also be discussed, as well as the persistent barriers facing women and other marginalized groups in astronomy, and the ongoing efforts to improve diversity and inclusion in the field.

"Venus: Earth's Evil Twin" by Mark Whipple

Earth and Venus have almost exactly the same size and composition, but have evolved into polar opposites. What genetic disorder, or childhood trauma or freak astrological twist turned Venus from our sibling companion into Earth's dark side evil twin? What other ominous secrets are hidden beneath that opaque and ever-present atmospheric cloak?
As viewed from Earth, Venus appears beautiful and benign - after the Sun and the Moon, the brilliant planet is the third brightest object in our skies - but she flatters to deceive. In actual fact, this "goddess of love and beauty" features an ugly toxic atmosphere, scorching heat and a runaway greenhouse effect. Earth's evil twin may indeed provide a glimpse into our own planet's future... and how we might prevent an atmospheric disaster.
