On February 15, 2018 we welcome the community to join us for the inaugural  "Shape of the Region" half day conference  we are hosting in partnership with the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce.    An  interactive community conversation will further examine the current shape of the region's civic , social and economic  health.

We've invited Michael Cassidy,  President & CEO, Commonwealth Institute;  and  R ichard Reeves,
Richard Reeves
Senior Fellow of Economic Studies and Co-Director of Center on Children and Families at Brookings Institution,  to help us explore two big issues facing our region's future: Opp ortunity and Inequality, and Tapping the Workforce Assets in Our Own Backyard .
The Community Foundation's Board and Staff are pleased to share the following message to our community:

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia is committed to building a community that works for everyone.

Our community is stronger when all people are respected, welcomed, and invited to share their assets and contributions in community building.

We work to bring about a more equitable and inclusive prosperity that marries our economic strength with the full breadth of our diverse community.

We are wholeheartedly devoted to our neediest neighbors and most vulnerable and marginalized populations, and work tirelessly to better meet their needs.

Now, more than ever, we see many opportunities for local action.

We do nothing alone at the Community Foundation.  Please join us in grant making, dialogue, outreach and advocacy.
Our community was so inspired after the Community Wealth Building Innovation
May 2017 Innovation Breakfast with Ted Howard and Yanique Redwo
Breakfast (last May), and its potential for r aising Northern Virginia's residents out of poverty, that it sparked a collective interest to further discuss how Northern Virginia can implement Community Wealth Building strategies locally.  Questions like, "Can we encourage the growth of locally owned and managed worker co-ops? Can we harness the procurement power of our anchor institutions to benefit those co-ops?  Can we come together as a community to create jobs for the hard to employ segment of our workforce and help create a local economy that works for everyone?  All were a part of the discussion that led to our realization that the Foundation needed to engage in an initiative for further exploration of these topics and determine what is possible in our region.  This allows us to collaboratively work with those who share our mission, and provides us with an opportunity to truly make a difference as ideas lead to action plans. The Foundation's Community Wealth Building initiative is being led by a group of over 30 Community Foundation volunteers who  are exploring ways that Community  Wealth Building can have an impact in our region. For more information or to get engaged  in the Community Wealth Building project, please contact Sari Raskin at [email protected].
Our September Innovation Breakfast was titled "High Skills, High Demand, High Wage - Skills-Based Education Comes of Age." More than 175 participants attended the event.  Panelists discussed skills-based technical education and how it prepares individuals for living wage jobs.
2017 Community Leadership Award Winner Mark A. and Brenda L. Moore (left and right), Mistress of Ceremonies Dorri Scott (center)
The Raise  the Region 2017 Gala  hosted more than 600 business leaders, philanthropists,  and community organizers.  The event raised over $530,000 to support the Community Foundation's work and mission to grow philanthropy to respond to critical need and seed innovation in Northern Virginia. Also at the event, Mark and Brenda Moore of the Mark and Brenda Moore Family Foundation were recognized with the 2017 Community Leadership Award.

How have you been involved with the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia over the years?

We have been actively involved with the Community Foundation for the last 5 years.  We have helped extensive with the Community Investment Fund program.  Each year we have contributed.   Equally important we have actively reviewed those community service grant applications that are submitted to the Community Foundation.
Did you know that you can designate us as a beneficiary of a retirement, investment or bank account or your life insurance policy? A beneficiary designation gift is a simple and affordable way to make a gift to support the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia and the causes that are closest to your heart.

With a beneficiary designation gift you can:
  • Support the causes that you care about
  • Continue to use your account during your life
  • Simplify your planning and avoid expensive legal fees
  • Reduce the burden of taxes on your family
How a beneficiary designation gift works:
  1. To make your gift, contact the person who helps you with your account or insurance policy, such as your broker, banker or insurance agent.
  2. Ask them to send you a new beneficiary designation form.
  3. Complete the form, sign it and mail it back to your broker, banker or agent.
  4. When you pass away, your account or insurance policy will be paid or transferred to the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, consistent with the beneficiary designation.
Visit our web site for more information on how to give smartly through beneficiary designations or call Eileen Ellsworth at 703-879-7635 for more information.
