September is Suicide Awareness Month

At the September 26th Township Committee Meeting, the Mayor and Township Committee declared September as National Suicide Awareness Month and vowed to continue to support suicide awareness programs dedicated to helping Hillsborough's community because suicide is one of the most disruptive and tragic events a family and community can experience.

Did you know?
  • Annually more than 44,000 lives are lost to Suicide.
  • Each person's death by suicide intimately affects at least six other people, with over 246,000 newly bereaved each year.
  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death of adolescents between the ages of 15-24. There is one completed suicide every 13 minutes in the United States, 100 per day.
  • Hillsborough has experienced a statistically significant number of confirmed suicides over the last 16 years.
Hillsborough Township Public Schools actively educates students about suicide in an age appropriate manner.  BORO SAFE's goal is to raise community awareness that suicide is preventable. Residents are encouraged to educate themselves of the warning signs of suicide and understand suicide is preventable and that there are resources available.  Additionally, organizations and individuals such as Governor Chris Christie, Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno, 2nd Floor-NJ Youth Helpline, NJ Hopeline, National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Jersey Voice, BORO SAFE, Hillsborough Police Department and Hillsborough Township Public Schools enhance  awareness throughout  our community by providing support or services to individuals in need.

News From The Building Department

Do I need a permit?  This is the first question every homeowner should ask before  they decide to start a project.  The answer may surprise you!

Generally speaking, the scope of the work to be done will determine whether a permit may be necessary.  For instance, common projects homeowners face like replacing your roof, siding, furnace, air conditioner or water heater do require a permit .

Other projects, defined as "ordinary maintenance" such as replacing an existing  light fixture, electrical outlet or wall switch do not .   Replacing a an old sink, worn out faucet or broken toilet , so long as its location and existing plumbing are not being changed or altered , do not require a permit.

Please contact the Building Department with any questions: (908) 369-5882

HRC Fitness to host 4th Annual 5K Run, Walk, Dash for Down Syndrome and Fall Festival

In keeping with their commitment to serve the community, HRC Fitness will be hosting the 4th annual Charity 5K event on Sunday, October 1st in Hillsborough.  The primary beneficiary of the event is GiGi's Playhouse Hillsborough which opened its doors in January 2015 to provide therapeutic programs for individuals with Down syndrome.

This event provides an opportunity to bring together many local businesses in support of GiGi's Playhouse and it's participants. This year, HRC expanded its charitable efforts by including the ability for other organizations to create teams for the purpose of raising money and awareness for their cause. One such organization that has taken advantage of this opportunity is the Joseph D Hernandez Foundation.  Foundation members created a race team at the event in support of the foundation, whose mission is to raise funds to purchase and distribute used and new sports equipment for underprivileged boys and girls that want to play organized sports but lack the financial resources to do so.  To find out more about the Joseph D Hernandez Foundation, visit JosephDHernandezFoundation on Facebook.

Following the 5K run and walk, GiGi's Playhouse Hillsborough will co-host a Fall Festival along with their 4th annual Dash for Down syndrome to raise awareness and acceptance for individuals with Down syndrome.  The Fall Festival is open to the public and will include food, face painting, a balloon artist, games, fitness class demonstrations, a DJ, photo booth, and more, with something for every member of the family.
