Vol. 7, Iss. 34
November 16, 2017

Dear Parents,

Each year the Douglas County Educational Foundation (DCEF) asks parents and students throughout the district to nominate teachers and support staff for the coveted Apple Awards. Nominees receive a certificate and recognition at the school level. Then, the school chooses two of the nominees to represent the school at the District awards ceremony, where they have the opportunity to win Teacher of the Year, Classified Staff of the Year, or Administrator of the Year.

While I am off next week, enjoying time with my family and reflecting on all I have to be thankful for, I also will be spending some time nominating staff who are so deserving of acknowledgement.  I encourage all of you to do the same--take a few minutes out of your day and nominate your favorite BFA teachers and staff for these prestigious awards. The best nominations are the ones that come from students. This would be a great 'giving thanks' family activity to work on together during Thanksgiving week! Click here for the link to submit nominations--all nominations are due by Friday, Dec. 22.

I wish you all a safe journey wherever the break takes you, and hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving week full of family, food and fun! See you back here on Monday, Nov. 27!

Sincerely,

Diana Simpson

Happy Thanksgiving

DRESS OF CHOICE

Dress of Choice day is tomorrow, Nov. 17, for students who have not had two uniform violations since the last Dress of Choice Day.

RED LIGHTNING IS READY FOR THE FRUIT TOSS EVENT AT BFA

The Fruit Toss Club will be showing off their "Red Lightning" trebuchet for the school from 12:30 - 2:45 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 17, at BFA. Students in afternoon Kindergarten through eighth grade will have the opportunity to come see the fruit toss machine in action and some lucky students will get hands on experience in the mechanics of making fruit fly!

The Fruit Toss Club could use your help on two fronts:
  • Fruit Donations - Thanks to Jerry Flickinger and Home Depot we received a donation of 42 pumpkins, and we've purchased 22 more; however, we'd like some additional pumpkins because the more we have, the more we can toss! We have a blue bin in the lobby for donations of SMALL pumpkins or other fruit (4 pounds or less) to toss.
  • Volunteers -  Please sign up to help with the event. We have slots for setup, event help, and cleanup.

Thank you for your support!

Virtue2
PARTICIPATE IN VIRTUE AWARENESS BOOKMARK COMPETITION, DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NOV. 17

Tomorrow is your student's last chance to design a bookmark using the theme of BFA's 13 Virtues. As part of the Parent Teacher Organization's Virtue Awareness Program, they are asking kids to create colorful bookmarks highlighting one of Ben Franklin's 13 Virtues. Enter the bookmark contest TODAY for a chance to have your student's artwork printed and distributed to all students. One elementary and one middle school winner will be chosen and the winners will have their design professionally printed as either a bookmark or poster.  All entries are to be submitted to the collection box in the Dana Library by Nov. 17. Please email Jodi Watson with any questions.

TEACHER AND STAFF GIFT-GIVING IS CHANGING THIS YEAR

In lieu of room parents collecting voluntary donations for teacher class gifts, BFA's PTO has elected to participate in a new gift program for the entire staff this holiday season. Look in your student's Thursday folder today for details about this wonderful program called SCRIP. Parents benefit because this program streamlines the giving process--you simply write one check (or give cash) and indicate how it should be distributed. Teachers benefit because they have more than a hundred gift cards from which to choose.

In addition, because the SCRIP program gets a bulk discount from the gift cards they purchase, they are able to give the school back a portion of the money gifted, without taking funds from any staff member's gift. Click here for a link to the order form (it also will be distributed in Thursday folders after Thanksgiving); and turn it in using the new, red lockbox at school or wait until afternoon carpool on Dec. 5 and 6 when volunteers will be collecting donations. The last day to collect donations is Dec. 8 so teachers will have time to select their gift. Room parents or another representative will hand out the gift(s) during the holiday parties.

If you have questions about the program, email Rachelle Calahan, SCRIP Coordinator.

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, and literacy. We will be a data driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering the arts, sports, nature, and character.
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
